Specter Explains Pro-Coleman Remarks: "I Have To Get Used To My New Teammates"

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) has backed off from his rather interesting comment: "There's still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner."

Specter explained to CQ that it was all a mistake:

"In the swirl of moving from one caucus to another, I have to get used to my new teammates," he said. "I'm ordinarily pretty correct in what I say. I've made a career of being precise. I conclusively misspoke."

Asked who he's backing now in elections, Specter said, "I'm looking for more Democratic members. Nothing personal."

As I've posted, I asked the New York Times' Deborah Solomon, who conducted the interview, whether Specter seemed like he meant it -- and she says he did.

This guy is a snake. He is so lucky he has several months to get his crap together. If this elefction were any closerr he would have a better chance running as a Republican again.

user-pic

Cmon like he's the only politician that's a snake. Pretty soon he'll be our snake. He just has to molt.

user-pic

What do you mean, he's already our snake, Arlen Specter ("D"-PA)He's offically our problem now and much deal with him efficently. Like with a primary.

user-pic

So much for the comedy. At least he realizes what f*&*ing time it is now. Maybe he's finally starting to get it. Arlen isn't senile, in fact he's still sharp. Chalk all this up to a guy who's pushing 80, with cancer issues and an independent streak trying to learn new tricks to keep his career afloat. I think he might get this dem stuff all straight by next month.

user-pic

Time will tell indeed. He still has to get those automatic Republican talking points out of his brain.

user-pic

I don't know, given his very frequent flagrantly contradictory statements and actions lately, I am afraid he may be becoming senile.

user-pic

LOL Those damn autonomic republican reflexes.

user-pic

Here's a question I want someone to ask Specter:

Do you stand by your 2008 endorsement of John McCain?

user-pic

At the rate Arlen's going, Barack's going to be throwing his support behind Sestak by the end of the week!

user-pic

I pretty much dislike every step of this story. It was a speed round interview with serious and flippant questions apparently interspersed. Bad interview. Halperin rolled a grenade out there with the quote out of context and even in context it's a pain to figure out. Bad Media. The internet goes bat crazy. Bad internets. Specter gives a probably honest answer as to why he misspoke, but there's really not much to like about him either. Bad Senator.

Deborah Solomon is the queen of stupid questions, designed to elicit answers that can be easily taken out of context. I don't know why the Times wastes page space on her.

user-pic

Still does nothing to dispel his earlier remark. Does he think Coleman won or not? Does he think it would be justice if the courts awarded Coleman the election? He can claim now that he wants more Dems (which I certainly don't believe), but he has still said he thinks Coleman won.

Also I don't see this ending well for Specter - I think he's going to either run as an independent or retire.

Part of the problem he is running into is that he wants to seem principled and up until a week ago he was a Republican and was spouting off Republican talking points, so he simply can't become a Democrat and flip his stance 180 degrees on issues he's already on record for as a Republican. Obama budget, Dawn Johnsen, EFCA, Public-option Healthcare - if he'd flip now, he'd open up himself to biting attacks from Ridge in the General and even Sestak in the primary as standing for nothing except staying elected.

So I think there will be a lot of votes where he's going to vote against the Dems over the next few weeks and months. He was veering hard right to try and head off a primary challenge, he's on record during that time speaking out against the Dems and the Obama Administration, he's stuck with those comments and stances and so are the Dems.

user-pic

Actually, Eric and TPM got duped by Mark Halperin.

You shouldn't have trusted Halperin and his little out of context snippets and Drudge-like headline spin.

I'm sure the little slimey GOP clown is laughing at getting liberal blogger all upset, while also punishing a GOP turncoat.

You got punked. Spector isn't the only one walking things back.

user-pic

How did Klee get punked if Specter wasn't joking? By reporting on yet another stupid move which is supposed wind up as Halperin getting payback?

What was out of context? The woman who wrote the Times piece said Specter was serious. Specter said he was serious and made a mistake.

user-pic

No, Eric wasn't duped.

Thanks for the follow-up reporting after the rash of crap you had to endure from other comments on this story (in other threads). This isn't a clear-cut anything. It may be fun to point out how awful Halperin is, but not by ridiculing the diligent reporting of Eric and other staff of TPM.

If TPM responded in haste to everything Halperin posted, it wouldn't be the blog we all flock to several times a day for news updates. Period.

Specter is a whole different issue....

user-pic

The quote was clearly a joke, albeit in poor taste and one he probably regrets.

Halperin posted it without context, and TPM ran with it. Then we got a flurry of defensive posts trying to make it look like they weren't duped after all.

I fail to see the difference between fake-gaffe-of-the-week the rightwing usually pulls -- Michelle's "proud of my country", or "bittergate" or whatever. The Politico and Halperin seem to specialize in peddling this kind of crap.

It's cheap pandering and it's beneath TPM, imho.

I have a lot of respect for Eric and TPM, so take this as constructive criticism. I'm a fan.

user-pic

If Specter was joking, he would have said he was joking instead of trying to cover his ass by saying he wasn't used to his new teammates.

Specter was not joking; The writer said he was serious.

TPM didn't get it wrong; TPM was not played by Halperin.

Your protestations to the contrary are outright stupid.

user-pic

The quote was clearly a joke, albeit in poor taste and one he probably regrets.

How the heck do you know that? Do you have some internal link into Specter's mind, or is this just serious projection on your part?

user-pic

Looks like I was dead wrong on the Specter quote yesterday. I guess I should rein it in a little next time.

user-pic

No. You, in fact, were trying to be reasonable, by pointing out that it might have been a joke.

A joke is an easier explanation to accept than what apparently actually happened: Arlen really isn't thinking about the ramifications of his "switch" other than his seniority.

One ramification being that you don't go around calling for a Senate seat to be filled by a member of your old party. That is, you don't do that if you want to be taken seriously, and not as some opportunistic political hack, interested in saving your skin, and nothing else.

Arlen failed.

And in any event, you're pretty reasonable. And it was reasonable to think Arlen was just joking.

user-pic

So you are saying that it's easier to believe that he's joking than to believe that anyone could make such a stupid statement? Maybe you are right. How could the situation, his situation, have changed so much and he still be in the same old mindset? Still saying the same old dogma? I thought it had to be a joke.

If he starts saying that "Obama's not ready to lead", then we'll know that he is a person who doesn't realize that he's afraid to fly but just walked on to the tarmac without realizing it.

user-pic

tpm overreacted to the 'story'. no doubt.

and that is as halperin expected / designed.

but nobody was 'duped'. the comment it turns out was not made tongue in cheek but in earnest. this actually vindicates kleefeld/tpm on the substance (such as it is) of the 'story' (even if it doesn't excuse how they handled the 'story').

and let's be clear: there is no reason to single out kleefeld. it isn't as if he was the only one here at tpm putting up posts on this.

user-pic

Wow looks like Dems in the senate haven't appreciated this BS. They just voted no on giving him seniority until 2010.

user-pic

Oh come on. The Senate isn't reading TPM. He didn't get seniority because the people he would be taking from were pissed. If he wins in 2010, he will likely get some seniority but maybe not all.

user-pic

Who said they were reading TPM? You think there was no way he would have gotten seniority had he played it differently on the talk shows and up until now?
I read that Senate Dems were pissed from day one but I doubt Reid and others would have told him they could give him something they couldn't get. I think he screwed himself out of it.

user-pic

It's naive to think his "gaffe" or blogger loathing has anything to do with this. It's turf battles.

user-pic

Shortsighted decision.

user-pic

Yes. Let's give the Republican everything he wants. Perhaps a cabinet position when he gets primaried out.

user-pic

I think Specter was on autopilot mouthing a brain fart of party line talk. That's somewhat forgivable since so much of modern political speech is focused on staying on message in a narrow defensive sense (sad to say). But it does show a lapse as he admits re "correct" and "conclusively misspoke".

A couple more like that and I'll take it as a sign that he won't be a Democrat in Congress after Jan 2011. He might even have to retreat much sooner than that.

user-pic

I want to see a poll on Sestak vs. Ridge. I think that's where this might be going.

user-pic

Three words: Senator Joe Sestak!

user-pic

"I'm not use to my new team mates". So surely Arlen will understand in 2010, when Dems vote for someone else, because we are not use to our new team mate!

user-pic

good to see tpm wasn't completely off base. but to be clear, the problem yesterday was that tpm looked like it had gone apeshit for the 'story' before anyone even bothered to check the context of the quote halperin baited everyone with. there were something like seven posts (from four different people including posts by josh marshall and david kurtz on the front page) in the space of little more than an hour that featured or referenced specter's coleman remark/gaffe/insight-into-his-soul. all of this before anyone had bothered to read the context.

the tpm that would have made me proud might have 'covered' the 'story' this way: by posting an item flagging halperin's post with the take-away quote (while noting that halperin flagged it in bold letters 'attention liberal bloggers: go nuts!!!'). this post would have been short and sweet and concluded with, 'we'll get back to you when we read the rest of the interview'. this would have then warranted an 'update' to the effect of 'reading the interview, in context it's possible specter was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek but we've got phone calls in for clarifications...' this in turn might have warranted a chin-scratching post from josh. then everything gets wrapped up with a post on the follow up with the interviewer and a post on the follow up from specter. four posts. and all the apeshit drama stays in the comments section where it belongs.

user-pic

I guess it never crossed his mind to try to figure out who was right on the merrits. He just wants to know which team to pull for.

user-pic

The only good thing about this defection is that it was a definite blow to the Republican's ego. Historically Specter flips back and forth with no strong personal convictions for his Party or constituents .... his votes are based on what's best for SPECTER's CAREER! Very sad but common among many of our politicians today.

user-pic

If spector isnt cutting his own throat hes laughing in the face of the democratic party. Get real, you know hes gonna stick it up obama s butt the first time he needs his vote. Besides, the old goat is 79 YEARS OLD! Its time he retires, this country can run without him, he just doesnt know it, If his legacy isnt there forget it, Its the trouble with everything, these guys get in there and they think its only their way. Look at Byrd, he cant even talk and who know how mentally stable he is,, time to put them out to pasture Mr SPECTOR .

user-pic

Okay, I'm officially compelled to take Specter at his word.

I'm also inclined to note, however, that once the blog shitstorm Halperin rather explicitly sought to whip up was in full force and Harry Reid's office had slapped Specter's wrist and then washed his hands (as, the CDC reminds you, we all should be doing frequently) of the remark, the option of saying "damn, I was only joking" was off the table for him as a practical matter.

And I remain profoundly disturbed by the way this unfolded.

Halperin necessarily got this tidbit through a leak from the NYT Mag editors or the author as part of an attempt to generate buzz and clicks. "Hey Mark, we got some gaffe, baby! Here's a couple of lines snipped out of the as-yet unpublished interview! Turn on your Drudge Light and drum up some clicks for us, brother!"

Halperin then loudly and clearly signalled that he was, in fact, deliberately seeking to stir up a liberal blog shitstorm and the liberal blogs, including the one I most respect, swallowed it up like a bass hitting a big juicy-looking crawdad (notwithstanding that great big hook-shaped thing and piece of string tied to it).

I think a little sober reflection on the fact that Halperin jerked the strings and liberal blogs and commenters danced a jig is in order. It seems way too much like the way the Drudgified MSM newscycle--identified, lionized and made famous, ironically and not coincidentally, by one Mark Halperin in "The Way to Win" has worked.

Given the fact that the liberal blogs are a reaction to, and, indeed, represent an ongoing critique of, that ugly and destructive dynamic, one would have preferred to see a little circumspection and reflection before running with this.

Instead, we got a Politicoesque "Run that baby and do it fast or we'll risk being irrelevant for hours!" from the blogs and a lot of reflexive knee-jerking and hissing more reminiscent of a Two Minutes Hate session than a reasoned discussion from the commenters.

I'm certainly neither immune spinal reflex reactions nor otherwise above reproach myself, on this score. Among other things, the sight of a photo of Cheney, or Lieberman smiling that smarmy smile, or Zell Miller or, lately, Ben Nelson, works on me like the sight of a Goldstein clip does on a plusgood Outer Party comrade. But I guess the fact that, for whatever reason, I just don't have the same kind of visceral reaction to Specter gave me the emotional distance necessary to question what this whole episode says about us and I didn't, and still don't, like the answer. It is all just a little too redolent of the kind of behavior I associate with our opponents over in Wingnutdom for my comfort.

user-pic

He talks like a Republican and votes like a Republican, so why are we letting him call himself a Democrat? Specter is the joke, and let's replace him with a real Democrat in 2010.

user-pic

To Formerly NCSteve:

This comment flew because it was part of an incredible string of right-wing actions and comments on the part of Specter in the few days since he ostensibly became a Democrat:

- He votes against Obama's budget.
- He says he's opposing Dawn Johnsen for OLC.
- He reiterates opposition to EFCA.
- He says he's against a public health insurance option.
- He vehemently denies ever saying he'd be "a loyal Democrat".
- He says that the one vote he most regrets in his entire career is his vote against confirming Jeff Sessions ("NAACP is un-American") as a judge.
- He says justice will be done if the courts rule for Coleman.

Did I miss anything?

So maybe all of this doesn't provoke a "visceral reaction" from you, but for me, visceral is a mild word!

user-pic

It would appear that the "D" beside his name is not for "Democrat" but for "Douche Bag".

user-pic
“I think in this line of work you have to prove yourself every day to everybody,” Specter said.

Saying his vote against Sessions was THE one that he'd openly like to rescind sounds like troll bait, and yet, coming from someone who wants to preserve their legacy more ironic than insidious.

user-pic

That the Democrats would take Spector in as one of their own doesn't say much for them. It just lessens who/what the party has become and is.

Perhaps they should change their name to Dimocrats.
