Specter Loses Seniority On Committees
The Senate Democratic Conference voted unanimously last night to deny seniority to Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), putting him near or at the very bottom of the Democratic rankings in each of his five committees during this Congress. He will be the last Senator to ask questions during the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation hearings. This matter could potentially be revisited after the 2010 elections.

I am glad that Specter will not have his seniority. Back of the line, no cutting. And dangling the carrot of rethinking it after 2010 can't hurt, I don't think. Maybe Arlen will straighten up a bit.

user-pic

Yup.

. . . putting him near or at the very bottom . . .

Where he belongs.

user-pic

And the best thing about it is that he can't use his 30 years seniority as an excuse in the primary as to why he should be given the seat for life. After 2010 he'll barely be ahead of the other 5-6 freshman Democratic senators coming in.

user-pic

"Maybe Arlen will straighten up a bit". Doubt it, but as him being my Senator I can only hope.

user-pic

The best way to get him to straighten up is, as Kos put it, to primary him.

user-pic

Oh could of sworn I wrote that in my post. Yes the best way is to primary him and that man's name is Joe Sestak. Being from PA, I want this more to happen than anyone on here and if he runs i'll work on his campaign, donate money. Whatever it takes to kick this POS off the curve.

user-pic

Well Kos would know, the man is a genuius when it comes to political blogging. That's why his blog is my favorite and that's why he's been called "The Blogfather". I believe the guy who runs MYDD came up with that term.

user-pic

Actually, I think it's Kos that calls Jerome Armstrong of MyDD his Blogfather.

but whatever.

user-pic

Do people really still think that semantic parlor tricks like the "enemy combatant" term make it okay to abuse prisoners of war?

Where is this Great American Cultural Sea Change I keep waiting for?

I'm going to go suck my thumb now...

user-pic

I am sorta glad that I have finally found a flaw in Barack Obama - makes him more human.

Ordering a burger Medium-Well? He did it on Air Force One too.

Burgers should be rare or medium-rare at the most. End of discussion!

I feel like a Republican trying to end debate simply by claiming I'm right - but in this case I am so its ok...

Seriously that must be how they think.

user-pic

Co-sign. If you want a burger -- or, for the love of God, a steak -- medium well or well done, you should have ordered the chicken. Goddamn you. Goddamn you Barack Obama, with your medium-well burger! (shakes tiny fist at sky).

My advice to the President:

When you order a steak, and the wait-staff asks you how you want it done, you say: "However the chef recommends." Different chefs tend to cook meats to different temps, and you let them have your trust, because they will know better than you when meat is ready. If you tell them how long to cook it, you will not get their attention, or their love. Trust your chef when it comes to steak. "However the chef recommends."

When you order a burger, and if you do not like blood, you say "medium." You never go above medium. Ever. Ever.

user-pic

May you, and those who think in agreement with you, never get e-coli from an undercooked burger! Just sayin'.

user-pic

My thoughts exactly.

Obama was just looking out for his health. Or he might even have been under Secret Service orders to get it that way.

user-pic

Well, at least he didn't go into Outback and order the salmon -- like a dear friend of mine did a few years ago. I have refused to go to a restaurant with him ever again, the shame was so profound and enduring.

user-pic

Ordering a "medium" burger makes as much sense as cooking rack of lamb until it's well done. None whatsoever.

What's the point?

May as well eat a salad of cardboard. . .

user-pic

Who knew there was a Hamburger Taliban subculture on this site?

user-pic

Line 'o The Day.

Re Specter and seniority-

I totally agree with the majority of Senators in the Democratic caucus voting to not let Specter keep his seniority, for this 111th congress at least. However, this really highlights Reid's lack of any leadership. Hadn't he told Specter he would keep his seniority? Clearly, Reid cannot lead in any way. The Democrats need new leadership in the Senate.

When I think of Arlen Specter and his newly low seniority I am reminded of a Smiths song. It totally fits. He just hasn't earned it yet baby!

user-pic

Yeah I agree. I mean I like Reid the Senator, but I hate Reid the leader. I'm sorry, i'm huge supporter of Obama and the Party but I got to say that the man had no leadership qualities. Dick Durbin or Russ Feingold on the other hand do. I'm suprised for as long as Feingold's been in the Senate (going on 17 years ) he has yet to chair a committee. Guess it will take him another tn to do that to get the old bones like Rockefeller retire.

user-pic

Oh by the way, why the hell am I seeing web ad on here for Faux News (Fox Nation). I've been seeing them here all morning and can't think why Josh would sell ads for these shitheads (excuse my language) to put on here, a liberal blog.

Sorry if I sound enraged, but i'm very confused right now at the moment.

user-pic

If Rupert Murdoch's marketing department is stupid enough to advertise on a liberal blog, Josh should take the money and laugh all the way to the bank. I just see it as encouraging Fox to waste their money.

user-pic

Good Point.

Regarding military trials for people never in the US military:

Is it OK for other countries to use that system?

If Iran decides that an American is an "enemy combatant" is it OK for them to grab him in the US and bring him to Iran and put him on trial by the Iranian military?

If China decides that an American is an "enemy combatant" is it OK for them to grab him in the US and bring him to China and put him on trial by the Chinese military?

user-pic

Didn't you know that being American means never being wrong? Things that are not okay for other countries are okay for us.

Torture, holding people indefinitely with no trial, military tribunals for non-members of the military, these were all okay for Americans in the Geneva Convention and the Constitution. It was just written in invivible ink that only Bush administration officials and their apologists can see. That is why people like you and I think it is illegal.

user-pic

If they were proposing courts-martial, they might have a leg to stand on. But Bush's military commissions exist for the same reason that Gitmo itself does -- to try to evade the US legal system.

user-pic

I once saw Rich Lowry on the PBS Newshour tell Jim Lehrer that it was all right if other countries used our "enhanced" interrogation techniques on our troops, that this was a risk worth taking. I thought then and think now, that it would be wonderful to be a fly on the wall when he is forced to make that statement in front of a father or mother whose son or daughter is so enhanced.

Why is it that the folks crying the loudest for torture have never served in the military? Worth cogitating on.
