Boehner Fights Climate Bill With Filibuster, Brightly Colored Poster
As I reported yesterday, House Minority Leader John Boehner has seemingly traded in his old talking point on cap and trade legislation for a blue chart with brightly colored words on it.
Moments ago, he brought his new weapon to the House floor.

Unfortunately for Boehner, it doesn't seem to be changing anybody's mind with respect to the Waxman-Markey bill. But more unfortunately for its supporters, he's also poised to drag this debate on for hours by reading a recently incorporated 300 page amendment to the bill out loud. A pseudo-filibuster, if you will, to delay the vote as long as possible.

this is going to help, how?

Gotta hand it to him. He fights tirelessly for the right to be a dick.

Agreed. Having a couple of leaders in congress willing to be that dickish when the GOP ran things would have been heartening to those of that hating seeing their horrible policies railroaded through the congress.

Good grief. Boehner makes my 7 year old son seem mature.
Proof once again that the GOP is simply not series about legislation or governing. Just opposing.

Could not agree more. There actions since the Pres election have shown their very obvious willingness not to work/compromise with the new admin. Almost all GOP in the House, apposed the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter act for fu&K's sake.
The GOP to me is just pro-business or could say pro-status-quo-business and therefor this stance taints every issue from climate change, to health-care to trade policies.

I don't like Boehner, and I don't like his policies, and I wish he would just go away. But I have to say, I think he's been very effective as the leader of the essentially powerless House Republicans. Democrats in the minority didn't have 1/10 the success of Mr. Boehner at slowing down legislation they disliked.
He's pretty much the only Republican pol doing a good job (for his party, not for the country) these days.

He is unaware of how idiotic he and his colleagues look right now to, I don't know, maybe 80% of Americans?
To be a global warming denier in this century is absurd enough. But to advertise that unfortunate predisposition on prime time tv while your band of cohorts clap their opposable thumbless hands
for all the world to see is supreme idiocy.

This dude spends more time in the tanning booth than he does on serious legilation.
When you hear yourself say "is that all they got"
know that the answer is yes.
PS do tanning booths or the gas Boener spews add more to global warming?

I am consistently struck by the absolute certainty that supporters of this legislation have that they are so clearly correct. Why so many ad hominem attacks against those who question whether there this is good legislation? To say that it is "absurd" to be a "global warming denier" misses the point. To say that there is no scientific debate is quite simply untrue. How much global warming will actually be forestalled by this legislation? Is it good to have national building standards? Is it smart to mandate universal deployment of low tech solar and wind technologies throughout our electrical grid? Is the cap and trade tax prudent? Will it put out of business many energy intensive manufacturers, and take more skilled manufacturing jobs overseas? How many of the congressmen have actually read the contents of this 1200+ page bill? Is this the best way to govern? Please spare us the ad hominem attacks and self righteous huffing and puffing.

It is absurd to be a global warming denier, there is no scientific debate, and as far as "how much global warming will actually be forestalled by this legislation": Not enough, but it is a start.

He went on for well over an hour, he had 2 1/2 minutes left in debate. He took advantage of rules to throw his little tantrum. That is the point to this thread.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Is it right or wrong to cross the street when the signs says don't walk? Can I reach the itch in the middle of my back? Is it hotter or colder in the North or the South? Is there a purpose to life? Is god dead or alive? If I have 3 apples and two oranges, what time will the sun come up tomorrow? How long can I continue to ask inane rhetorical questions? A year? A month? A day? Next summer? Where is the men's room? What time does the movie start? Why does -- oh never mind I need to go home now...

Oooh... aaaah... pretty colors. It is as ineffective, superficial, and irrelevant as the GOP itself. The debate is over, we are moving on to newer, better, and more challenging and exciting things - climate change and anything "green" is marketable and profitable - a veritable gift to the business sector, yet ironically the GOP is fighting it. They are completely clueless and out of touch with everyone.
