George H.W. Bush On Attacks Against Sotomayor: "That's Not Right"
Former President George H.W. Bush weighed in earlier today on the attacks against Sonia Sotomayor -- and he's against it.
"I don't know her that well but I think she's had a distinguished record on the bench and she should be entitled to fair hearings," said Bush. He cited the example of Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who said that while he might vote for or against her, he is backing away from the more vitriolic attacks.
"And she was called by somebody a racist once. That's not right. I mean that's not fair," said Bush. "It doesn't help the process. You're out there name-calling. So let them decide who they want to vote for and get on with it."

God, he seems so sane and reasonable now. I often thought that he actually seemed like a good person despite his policies. I could never say that about his devil son. Good on him.

I know, right? There's more than a little truth in that joke about how every Republican administration makes you nostalgic for the one before.
I'll give the man this, too: I don't see him walking it back and apologizing to Rush.

Sorry, but I'll always recall remarkably ungentlemanly behavior towards Geraldine Ferraro (I know, I know) during his vice presidential debate with her during the Reagan/Mondale race...and some contemptuous extemperaneous remarks against some AIDS activists at one point in the early '80s. These things may sound trivial and incidental, but they had an imprinting effect on me; and since we're talking about how the man "seems" (marking on the curve of inherent loathsomeness among Republicans), these factors matter, as far as I'm concerned. Besides, like his son, he's remarkably anti-intellectual and inarticulate despite being a product of extreme privilege...and, come on, he's his damn son's father.
