Hillary: Obama Has Passed "3 a.m." Test
Appearing on ABC's This Week, Sec. of State Hillary Clinton was asked whether President Obama has passed the "3 a.m." test that she raised in her famous campaign ad against him in the 2008 primaries. "Absolutely," said Clinton. "And, you know, the president in his public actions and demeanor, and certainly in private with me and with the national security team, has been strong, thoughtful, decisive, I think he is doing a terrific job. And it's an honor to serve with him."

Hillary: I Initially Rejected Sec. of State Offer
Also during her This Week interview, Hillary Clinton said she'd initially turned down the offer from President Obama to be Secretary of State, thinking it was "absurd" and wanting to go back to serving New York in the Senate. "But he was quite persistent and very persuasive. And, you know, ultimately, it came down to my feeling that, number one, when your president asks you to do something for your country, you really need a good reason not to do it," said Clinton. "Number two, if I had won and I had asked him to please help me serve our country, I would have hoped he would say yes."

Obama Spends Morning Touring Paris With Family, Headed Back To Washington
President Obama spent the morning with his family in Paris, visiting the Pompidou Center for his daughter Sasha's eighth birthday. He then left Paris, and is scheduled to arrive back at the White House at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Axelrod: Attacks On Sotomayor A "Sideshow"
Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, David Axelrod dismissed right-wing attacks against Sonia Sotomayor as a "sideshow." "The point she was making is that we're all the sum total of our experiences and you bring those experiences with you to the bench," said Axelrod. "It's the same point that Justice Ginsburg and Justice Alito have made and I think that the debate is kind of a diversion from her 17-year record as judge."

Gingrich: Sotomayor's "Latina" Comments Would Disqualify A White Person
Appearing on CBS' Face The Nation, Newt Gingrich expanded on his denunciations of Sonia Sotomayor. "The language she used -- well, if you say, People of this ethnic background are superior to people of this ethnic background, just take out her language and put in the word "white," said Gingrich. Put in "white male" where she had "Latina," and that person would be -- frankly, be disqualified from the court. It also would be disqualified as a -- as a juror.

Shelby: Public Option Would Destroy "The Best Health Care System The World Has Ever Known"
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) warned that a public option for health care would "be the first steps in the -- destroying the best health care system the world has ever known." Shelby explained: "Because government -- when the government's involved more and more in the details, and you start the one pay deal, and you've got the government competing with private enterprise, with all the incentives government has and the power, they will destroy the marketplace for health care, and it will be a mistake, and the American people better be careful in what they want."

Palin Attacks "Weakness" Of Proposed Defense Cuts In Alaska
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) has attacked the White House's proposed cut of $1.2 billion for missile defense in Alaska, arguing that the program is more necessary now in the wake of North Korea's missile tests. "Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," said Palin.

Grassley Attacks Obama's Paris Visit: "We still on skedul/even workinWKEND"
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is now ramping up his Twitter-speak attacks on President Obama, calling him a hypocrite for visiting Paris. In one Tweet: "Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris to tell us'time to deliver' on health care. We still on skedul/even workinWKEND." And another: "Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said 'time to delivr on healthcare' When you are a 'hammer' u think evrything is NAIL I'm no NAIL"

If government health care is so awful, why does Shelby think private health care can't compete with it? If private health care options are so much superior, they'll do fine, and government health care will only be there to assist those who already can't afford a private plan.

user-pic

Not to mention the utterly fatuous wingnuttery that the vastly over-expensive and under-performing mess we have now is "the best health care system the world has ever known". What completely ignorant drivel.

user-pic

If Gov't healthcare is so awful, why doesn't Shelby forego it for a private plan?

user-pic

I fervently hope that the good people of Iowa are keeping notes on what this twit is saying . . . and will refer to them when he's up for reelection.

user-pic

This Iowan certainly is, and I WAS a reliable vote up until the "it's Obama's war now" tweet.

user-pic

"Best health care system in the world," my eye. Perhaps the care is good, but only if you can pay for it, which is getting less and less frequent these days.

I'm glad Grassley's continuing his criticism of Bush's MONTHS on vacation with Obama. Oh wait, he didn't criticize Bush.

user-pic

the care is good?

we have the worse and most expensive health care in the world.

it not only is a corrupt system but in fact has been found to be guilty of violating the rico act (the AMA has).

people should get some knowledge of what actually passes for health care in this country.

from the corrupt FDA and drug companies right on down to the doctors who have become pill pushers and cure NO ONE and are proud of it.

user-pic

Look, Repubs know they can't stop this. Over 62% of Americans support single payer, over 59% of doctors. There will be a government/non profit run option, the forerunner of pure single payer in the healthcare plan. What they're after now is enough mojo to hamstring it, tart it up with enough bureaucratic bullshit, making it much harder for people to sign up and expensive to administer.

It's our job not to let them. They'll claim they're trying to keep illegals out, make it "fairer", "less costly" or some such nonsense. Get down in the weeds of their amendments, epxose them for what they are in letters to the editors, to everyone on your email list. We get one shot at this and it's this year. If we don't get the strongest, cleanest public option we can, we let ourselves, our country and our president down.

Too bad Al ranks 40th in healthcare in the US:

http://www.americashealthrankings.org/2008/glance.html

It's particularly hilarious that all these southern fried Republicans extol the virtues of US heatlhcare when almost all of it is found outside their own region.

Anyone who doesn't think the refusal of the states to provide adequate health care for it's population is tightly linked to Racism should look at the ranked list you linked to, bluebell. The old confederate states + Oklahoma are all at the bottom.

I live in Texas, and I have heard it frequently said in private settings that there was no room for welfare or public health care here because it woul d support all those lazy "N*****s" and "Wet****s" (slang for Mexican illegal immigrants.) Of course, the public debate is centered on the cost of providing the services and the refusal to raise taxes or impose an income tax. But the real reason behind those arguments is Racism.

As an indicator, the very wide-spread Southern Baptist Convention only finally apologized for their support for slavery in the 1990's. My impression was that a lot of people still didn't want them to apologize.

Sen Grassley- LOL u r gr8. u make me rothflmao. u am 1 smrty. y dont u stick u hed up u (_!_) bcuz u have room up ther. TTFN bvd

user-pic

Grassley is especially callous as Obama was probably only around Paris because it's daughter's birthday today. Typical uncaring republicans.

user-pic

I like when we shoot the things at the missles and they go BOOOOOM!

user-pic

Thank you, Governor. *Always*, a pleasure!

user-pic

Fuck you Sen. Grassley. Whatever happened to never criticizing a President when on foreign soil. This fuck bag Grassley never had problem when Bush was clearing brush and chopping wood. Here’s to Obama who has the curiosity to take in local culture.

user-pic

Yep, seems like he's been rapidly sliding down that slippery slope from "character" to "crank" since the 111th Congress organized.

user-pic

You are out of line with this!

The distinguished Senator was relaxing with friends, and was heavily intoxicated when he tapped in these marginally coherent lines. A celebratory approach to inebriation has been an icebreaker for the senior legislator and it has knocked down communications barriers with constituents. Belting back a a few on the weekends is a great lubricator for a legislative leader who wants to get his word out there, even if in a slurry manner. Take note, please, and let's have one for the road!

Here's to ya,
O.T. ;)

user-pic

I second everyone else's comments about Grassley. Not to mention the absurdity and humor inherent in a 75 year old male's attempt at being hip and talking/texting/tweeting like he is 15. Way to go, Chuckles...

user-pic

Hillary Clinton is just a fawning kool-aid drinking Obamabot mindlessly worshipping at the feet of her Messiah.

user-pic

Tsk, tsk! Sounds like another desperate attention-seeking Repub has crawled out from under their rock. Complete with puerile name-calling.

user-pic

Hard day, fella? What's wrong? Seriously, this is not like you.

user-pic

Just indulging in a little dry irony. Possibly it's only recognizable to the handful who've stuck around since the primary wars.

But hey, having been called all of those things myself in the last 48 hours, I'm honored by her company. And considering some of the things I said about her in those days, that's pretty damn ironic too.

user-pic

Oh, that's a relief! Back then I was known here as what, EuroTrash Johnny perhaps? Who cares. I was pretty ferociously tough on her myself is the point. It's amazing to me how she's gotten on board, to me. I'm really proud of her an extremely glad to have been wrong.

Looks like you just got called a Republican! Me too a few days ago! Oh me oh my! :)

user-pic

With respect, the irony was not all that subtle :)

user-pic

Funny you should mention it. I actually initially typed "subtle" and then replaced it with "dry" because it was not, in fact, very subtle.

user-pic

Gingrich was disqualified before he flapped his trap, ergo he's just another scumbag loosing gas.
He's gone rogue now that he's impotent, picks on women now that he's impotent & contradicts himself at every press release now that he's impotent.

user-pic

Why did a sitting senator write like a retard? Does this explain why none of them read the bills that come across their tables? Perhaps we could start changing everything in the library of congress over to tweet text and lolcat speak to convince them to read the bills. I'm sure it would make things more interesting if a little incomprehensible.

user-pic

"Why did a sitting senator write like a retard?"

I explained above, the distinguished Senator was trying to make a down-to-earth connection with the voters, silly! And to that end, he reasoned, what could be a better lubricator than some very heavy drinking before tweeting! Accordingly, in sound his legislative discretion, he got himself totally polluted and then strode forth to address the constituency in a less structured frame of mind, alright?

Can't we drink to that? Make his a double! Skol!

user-pic

Is Madame Secretary concerned about the "propaganda value" of US media coverage like this? And more to the point: Is she concerned that the official narrative of September 11 appears to be a monstrous fraud?

Won't be long before we see these bozos' twitter-speak in political ads.

Won't be pretty.
