National GOP Spends Big For Coleman
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has done a lot recently to help Norm Coleman's legal fight against Al Franken's super-narrow victory in the 2008 Minnesota Senate race, the Associated Press reports -- chipping in $938,000 in the last month alone.
The latest federal filings show that roughly $600,000 was spent directly by the NRSC on Coleman's legal bills, with $300,000 transferred to the state Republican Party for the same effort.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee did not itemize spending that might have gone to the Minnesota race, but it did raise $282,000 that was specifically earmarked for it.

At first, this pissed me off but then I realized that that's a cool million that they're not spending on other lies and obfuscation and the end result is that Al Franken will be a Senator. May all their spending be so fruitful...
Make them spend it all, Al!

Good. This is money they can't spend elsewhere.
Go for it, Republicans! Send MORE.

It's effectively bought them one critical vote in the Senate. I wouldn't exactly call that fruitless.

This is money that has been well spent for the Republicans. Well spent in that it has achieved their self defined goal to keep Al Franken from being seated in the Senate as long as possible, throwing a wrench into the Democrats majority and sidelining President Obama's agenda. There was no chance that Coleman would be reelected and seated, so the next best thing is to keep Franken from taking his seat and adding another vote to the Democrats' majority. They accomplished that. OTOH, what is the long term cost to the Republicans for doing this, on both a national level, and on a MN level for depriving them of their second Senator? Thoughts?

Meanwhile, anyone notice that "Franken, D-Minn" was listed, in 6/23 NYT Biz sxn, as one of the top five recipients of donations from the lobbying group working to prevent regulation of Hedge Funds.
I can't remember if it was $7000 or $7900, but I was surprised both to see the listing 'D-Minn' and that Al would take money from these guys while this issue is on the table.

I gotta believe at this point the MSC is looking for any reason at all to throw this thing to Coleman, and finding nothing, is busy fabricating the decision. I hope I'm wrong but going by history it doesn't look good. This should have been decided three weeks ago.
