New Pecora Commission Members To Be Named Shortly
Leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties are nearing their decisions on the roster of people who will sit on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. According to Reuters there are some familiar names floating around. "A short list of names has emerged that includes former Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson; former Democratic head of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission Brooksley Born; and Alex Pollock, a fellow at the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute, according to a source familiar with the matter."
[O]ther possible appointees include Bill Thomas, former Republican chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; Jake Garn, former Republican senator; and Bob Graham, the former Democratic senator and Florida governor.
There are some serious names on the list, but also some baggage. Fred Thompson, for instance, is now viewed as an extremely political figure. Additionally, there aren't any famous, trusted brands (Elizabeth Warren, for instance) or people associated with consumer protection, an issue House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hopes the commission will bring to light.

Excuse me? Fred Thompson?
WTF has Thompson ever done that qualifies him to be a member of this commission?
Sure, he's extremely partisan, which should disqualify him, but is he even qualified?
WTF?

Will he be able to stay awake for hearings?

I see there are no liberals on that list. How about Ralph Nader or Joan Claybrook, Fred Wertheimer? How about someone from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington? Putting someone from the AEI on this commission is like appointing ex Repug Senator Phil Gramm.
And here's an novel idea, how about one or two who aren't in bed, now or in the past, with the people they're going to oversee?

No Nader. Ever. Claybrook, Wertheimer, maybe. No Nader.

Seems like it's off to a bad start right from the get go... is this meant to be simply symbolic and reveal nothing?
Thompson? You must be joking.

Oh yeah, another useless commission! I already have the answer...and it didn't cost the American Public a dime!
WE (collectively) screwd up...lost our heads...quit being rationale adults.
Were their bad players? YES
Does naming them help? Not particularily
Was greed a factor? Yes
Does naming the most greedy help? Not particularly
If there is to be a commission, why not have people who actually understand the business, not the politics, of the problem head this committee?
Because then too much dirty laundry will be aired.
If this commission doesn't follow the money...then it and my money to fund it is just a waste of time...and gives all those appointed some extra cash in their pockets.
