TPMDC Morning Roundup

Obama: U.S. Shouldn't Be Distraction For Iran
In an interview with CBS, President Obama explained his cautious approach to the situation in Iran. "The last thing that I want to do," said Obama, "is to have the United States be a foil for -- those forces inside Iran who would love nothing better than to make this an argument about the United States. That's what they do. That's what we've already seen. We shouldn't be playing into that. There should be no distractions from the fact that the -- Iranian people are seeking to -- let their voices be heard."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will sign the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act today, at 2 p.m. ET in the Rose Garden. In the morning, he will have his routine daily briefings.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will join President Obama's daily briefings this morning, and will also be at the 2 p.m. ET bill signing. Afterwards, he will deliver remarks to 141 Presidential Scholar recipients from across the country.

Obama: U.S. Ready For Any Threat From North Korea
In his interview with CBS, President Obama sought to reassure the nation that the government is "fully prepared for any contingencies" with North Korea. "I don't want to speculate on hypotheticals," said Obama. "But I want ... to give assurances to the American people that the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted in terms of what might happen."

Wolfowitz: U.S. Should Reach Out To Moussavi
Former Bush Administration Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz told CNN that he thinks President Obama should reach out to Mir-Hossein Moussavi, to see if Moussavi is interested in a conversation. "If he doesn't, I certainly wouldn't push it," said Wolfowitz, who added: "I understand the concern about meddling in a way that seems to label the opposition as American tools, but the opposition made it very clear they want support from the world."

GOP Finding No Political Draw In Sotomayor
The Politico reports that Republican Senators are finding Sonia Sotomayor to not be the fundraising draw and political lightning rod they'd hoped for. "She doesn't have the punch out there in terms of fundraising and recruiting, I think -- at least so far," said Sen. John Thune (R-SD).

Obama Changes Terms Of Promise About Posting Bills Online
The New York Times reports that the Obama Administration is heavily modifying a promise he made on the campaign trail, to keep a bill posted online for five days after it has passed Congress and before he signs it -- in fact, he has almost never waited five days to sign a bill. A White House spokesman said that bills will now be posted online sooner, "once it is clear that a bill will be coming to the president's desk."

McConnell: I'm Darth Vader To Some, Luke Skywalker To Others
In a Washington Post profile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) brushed off the accusation that he is simply obstructing President Obama's agenda. "Anybody who is in the minority is accused of obstruction. It's a fairly common charge," said McConnell. "I may be Darth Vader to some groups, but to a lot of others I'm Luke Skywalker."

Blog flogger.

It boggles my mind that this DonDavis guy hasn't been banned from commenting yet.

It boggles the mind that he hasn't figured out that absolutely no one cares about his postings. It reminds me of that line from Bull Durham when Annie says: "The world is made for people who aren't cursed with self-awareness."

user-pic

Suffer delusions of grandeur (or even adequacy) much, Mitch?

user-pic

Can we get a show of hands on who thinks McConnell is Luke Skywalker?

user-pic

I was gonna say he was more like Jar-Jar Binks but Jar-Jar was a benign idiot, McConnell is just an idiot.

user-pic

At least Jar Jar Binks was likable. I was thinking more along the lines of Jaba the Hut without the girth.

user-pic

Jar Jar was not a benign idiot. He was not malicious, but that doesn't mean he was not benign. It's possible to simultaneously be not malicious yet not benign, especially when one is an idiot.

After all, Jar Jar was the Senator who proposed giving Palpatine dictatorial powers. That is the exact opposite of "benign".

Another idiot, incidentally, was Natalie Portman's character, whatever her name was. She was the one who gave Senatorial powers to Jar Jar. Given that Jar Jar is clearly an idiot, that's utterly absurd, and completely unforgivable.

I hereby award you the Hodgman Trophy for the day! <g>

user-pic

If he means the whiney, wimpy Luke from the beginning of the first movie, then OK, sure.

user-pic

He rubs me off as one of those henchmen Darth Vader force choked on the Death Star. We all know he is a lackey to big business.

user-pic

I'm going with Dark Helmet from Mel Brook's Spaceballs

user-pic

Isn't McConnell old enough to be Yoda? (without the wisdom of course).

user-pic

I was thinking more along the lines of Foghorn Leghorn, but whatever, Sen. McConnell.

user-pic

With respect and appreciation, I'd personally be grateful if the site did *not* keep us up to date on Wolfowitz's bloviations. I can avail myself of Crooks and Liars or RedState.com if I should find myself seeking the insight of megalomaniacal psychos.

user-pic

Wolfowitz inspires me in that someday I can be as big of a clueless fuckup as he is, and people will still be interested in what I have to say.

user-pic

Your point is obviously valid and very well taken, but you're still giving yourself too much credit.

Psyclone, you will *never* come *close* to Wolfowitz on the clueless fuckup scale! I mean, I'm your pal and all, but GIVE ME A BREAK, WILL YA?!! ROFLMAO!!
