Opponent Of Waxman Markey Now Supporter Of Waxman Markey
Earlier today, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) gave a blistering speech on the House floor, attacking the Waxman-Markey bill from the left and urging members to oppose it. Here's video via Friends of the Earth.
But just moments ago he had a change of heart. He called the GOP a "flat-Earth society" and said he would vote for the bill. That's some whip operation they've got going on over there.

When your whip operation includes Pres. Obama, VP Gore, Rahm Emanuel, and LabSec Hilda Solis, anything is possible. Heck, maybe Kucinich will come on board!

I'm a chapter president of an environmental group in NC. I'm holding my nose and supporting this bill. Bad as it is, it does set goals consistent with cutting carbon emissions overall by the necessary amounts. We must get started, and the rest of the world will do more only if we are on board.
Coal companies, coal burning utilities and the executives who run these companies must be called our for what they really are: immoral hacks unwilling to look past the short term bucks that they are paid in salaries and in membership in the corporate elite. But do not overlook all of the other "special" interests who held out until their votes were bought and paid for. The only way we got any bill at all was by paying the selfish to vote in the interest of our nation and our kids and grandkids. Shame, shame, shame.
Let's get what we can. Let's come back again and again. We'll get there. We have to.

Give Nancy Pelosi her due. This is her bill to get through the House, and she is succeeding.
It may not be a good bill, but if the perfect becomes the enemy of the good there will be NO bill. Any bill passed sets the minimum agenda and the new low point from which adjustments can be made later. It just becomes tinkering after this gets passed. This bill, for all its flaws, sets that agenda in stone - if passed by Congress.
Impatience and Perfectionism are both enemies of legislation. Impatience and Perfectionism are destructive alternatives to starting the critical actions. Beginning government action and initiating a response to global warming is the most important thing right now. This bill, considered dead only months ago, does that.
Kudos to Pelosi.
