Pawlenty: USA Turning Into South American Republic
During his appearance today on the Neil Cavuto show, potential presidential candidate Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) gave a dire warning about the mass nationalization of the economy under President Obama:
"But beyond just the money and the politics, just as a matter of philosophy and our country," said Pawlenty, "the nationalization of the auto industry, the likely partial or full nationalization of the health care industry, the energy industry -- this is gonna be a very different country 12 or 24 months from now."
He then added: "This is not the United States of America that we know and love and remember. This looks more like some sort of, you know, republic from South America circa 1970s."

I take it he was referring to the 8 years of the Buch/Cheney administration. It fits nicely.

We're going to be like South America in 70's? Does that mean our government will be overthrown by a big country in North America?
South America in the 70's --- I think of military dictators overthrowing democratic governments and conducting dirty wars to kill dissidents. Since we just got rid of our authoritarian government, I don't think so.
Is it a rule on Fox that you have to put on your idiot hat before going on the air?

If timmo is the nominee, it should be fun watching Obama make mincemeat of his record, where he let his state slip from the land of the Minnesota Miracle to a cold Omaha (and I used to live in Omaha, so I can say that) -- all to please the top income earners who had their taxes slashed by Bush.

Be careful about underestimating Timmey. He cleans up nice, generally thinks before he speaks, and isn't a nut like Michele Bachmann. He doesn't come off as racist, and can sound pretty reasonable.
I still think Obama would slaughter him, tho.

>He doesn't come off as racist
That was before he publicly expressed his discomfort that the country "looks more like . . . South America"

The GOP really does believe that he intends to hang on to GM and Chrysler forever and that talk of selling the government's stake back into the private equity markets as quickly as possible is just a lie to conceal his his evil plot to impose fascist communism.

Alternately, he's going to force us all to convert to Islam because, you know, he's secretly reciting the Koran in perfect Arabic. Maybe he'll do these things in alternate weeks.

So could it be "islamofascist communism?" Is it redundant to accuse him of foisting on "fascist islamofascist communism?"?

What I'm curious about is, if Pawlenty is really that angry about the government taking minimal steps to ease the pain of American automakers, how will this opinion of Pawlenty's go over in places like PA?

Don't you think they are sort of setting themselves up then -- when the govt gets out of the car business, all the scaremongering will look stupid.
It's almost as if we're playing chess against a checkers player.

It sounds like Pawlenty has been taking lessons from Michelle Bachmann.

The really, really sad thing is that Timmey is one of the more reasonable republicans around (relatively). He generally doesn't spout racist stuff, and doesn't advocate secession.
It's a low bar, being considered a respectable republican these days.

Avatar, this is how you can see he's running in 2012. He isn't making any sense. That's what they all love, so he's dishing it out for them.

I never thought I'd agree with Pawlenty but he's right on target there! We're becoming a typical South American oligarchy as we shovel tax money to the kleptocracy. I think the Financial Times suggested we might be becoming Russia. Timmy just isn't giving credit where credit is due, perfect timing as we honor Ronald Reagan and his legacy.

Last I checked that America had a 90% "wrong track" rating in November.

Did you just disqualify yourself for a position in a Pawlenty Administration??

He's right! The America I know, love and remember would never let the banks and financial services sector interbreed and crash the markets. That America would never have let corporate media conglomerates gobble up all their competitors. That America would have required the banks to have responsible lending practices that didn't prey on irresponsible/ignorant citizens. That America helped repress the innate human drive to excessive usury seen in today's CEOs and power elite. That America relegated conservative wingnuts/modern Republicans to the fringe of public debate as complete whack-jobs.
In some regards, I do miss that old America. Thankfully, Obama is trying to move us back in that direction.

These people remind a little of leftover communists after fall of ex-USSR. Commies wrecked the empire and folded tent, so with the empire wrecked and commies out of power, they wanted blame whoever was in charge after the wrecking was done. "Look at this mess! Look who's in charge! What's wrong with these people?!"

"This is not the United States of America that we know and love and remember."
Well, I'm reserving judgment on the America Obama will bring in, since up till now he's only been responding to crises he was left with, and we don't yet know what America under Obama will look like.
The America I remember (not love) is one led by an ignorant, nasty little man who that went clearing brush instead of putting the nation on high alert in the face of the worst attack on American soil in our history; in response, his America chose to murder hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern innocents, torture thousands more, and eviscerate our civil liberties here at home, all based on fearmongering and lies to cover up his historic blunder.
He also stood passively by while the greatest economic collapse in three quarters of a century unfolded under his watch. The gap between rich and poor reached its greatest heights since the Gilded Age, and over half-a-million working Americans lose their jobs every week due to his refusal to restrict the profiteering of the monied few.
If this is the America Pawlenty wants us to long for, then, as Obama is fond of saying, I'm happy to have that debate.

I'm 47. I was responding to the fact that Pawlenty's comments seem to suggest that things were just ducky until the Muslim Socialist came in and ruined everything in four short months.

Anyone who thinks that coming to the rescue of the banks to avoid a depression & saving 2 car companies (which were all started by a Republican president) is nationalizing complete industries:
a. Should not have his/her own show on a "news" network.
b. Does not deserve to be taken seriously on a national political stage.
Come back and talk the REST of America, Mr. Pawlenty when you are serious about debating real issues.

Funny. When I saw the headline, I thought he was referring to himself, strong-man Timmy, who has arrogated unprecedented budgetary power by refusing to compromise with the legislature and resorting to unilateral unallotment to balance the Minnesota budget. He has announced that he is not running for a third term, but perhaps he is planning to cancel the elections and declare himself governor-for-life.

Well, Timmy, under your regime, Minnesota doesn't look anything like the Minnesota we'd all come to know and love. You've been working your butt off to mold it into another Mississippi. The roads are turning to rubble. Law enforcement is strapped. Libraries and parks are closing up. I hope all of your tax-hating, government-hating, megachurch-going buddies out in the exurbs are enjoying the wealth that was redistributed to them. They'd better have invested it well, because we're about to turn this bus around.

chimpale, as a native Minnesotan I concur, and would like to add that T-Paw's legacy includes severe damage to our educational system (we are no longer "above average"), the 35W bridge collapse (he vetoed spending bills to repair bridges TWICE), and some of the highest property tax rates in the nation. His refusal to raise state taxes means municipalities as well as the state have cut crucial services for the most vulnerable and homeowners are shouldering a bigger burden but getting much less in return. Sounds just like someone the GOP would pick to lead their party.
