Poll: Even Conservatives Are In Favor Of Gays In The Military
A new Gallup poll finds an overwhelming majority of Americans, 69%, in favor of allowing gays to serve openly in the military -- it's so big in fact, that even self-identified conservatives are for it.
The polling internals show 58% of conservatives in favor, plus 86% of liberals and 77% of moderates, for the overall top-line of 69%.
Back in 2004, 63% of Americans were in favor, with 83% of liberals, 72% of moderates, and 46% of conservatives.
This does invite an important question: Is a center-right country like the United States ready to have gays serving in the military?

This is encouraging. There's no reason, whatsoever, for "Don't Ask Don't Tell" to go into the graveyard of stupid policies.

Back in 1970 NOT to go was the main thing on my mind. As Dick Cheney says, "I had other priorities."
Through one friend who got drafted and had his leg shortened by about three inches when a stoned guy on guard duty got startled and opened fire, I had the privilege of making friends with lots of guys on the VA ward in various states of cronic disability. They all had been drafted and they all said the military was a bunch of shit. Once I met a guy who volunteered and had an emotional disability from seeing his friends get blown up. He was physically OK but couldn't stop whining about that mythical war protestor who spat on a returnig vet. He didn't like me because I hadn't gone.
I still can't understand why ANYONE would volunteer to go into the military. I would like to say 'more power to em' or 'to each his own' but I keep flashing back to that old sixties poster slogan: "What If They Had A War And Nobody Came?" I did my duty to that cause. I think everybody should. Gay or straight, find some other priority.

Sure I can die for my country but I still can't marry Kleefeld

I don't think it really matters whether or not the public approves or not. There are gays in the military and there always have been.
There seems to be a Jack Nicholson line about handling the truth that comes to mind here...

Apparently they have reached a moment of clarity — they'd prefer to have gays serve openly in an all-volunteer force than to have a draft in which their own children might have to serve.
Hypocrisy has no bottom — only an endless series of false floors.

Exactly. On the rare occasion that conservatives reach the right conclusion, you can be sure they have done it for selfish or ignorant reasons.

So if there is overwhelming public support .... why the hell is this stupidity carried out one more damn day???
Are we still kissing the ass of a tiny super duper christian angry few who are sooooo afraid of having 'openly' gay people around???
I guess we are. I guess all decent minded Americans together still cannot tell a small group of bigoted bullies to shut up and sit down.
Pathetic.
