Sanford Story A Big Boost To Local Paper
I just spoke with Gary Ward, The State's managing editor for online, and he told me that the Mark Sanford story has been great for his paper's online traffic.
"It's been incredible," said Ward, with the paper getting links from all manner of national news outlets.
"Page views are about three-times normal, and monthly uniques for today are just, like eight times normal," said Ward. "If you look at a graph of our traffic, it started on Monday when we started reporting through the day."
"I would say that traffic today, starting from Monday through today, has been tremendous," he added. "Monday is usually the busiest day of the week, but today is just huge, and blowing last week, and last year at this time, out of the water."

There you go, newspaper industry, there's how you survive - by breaking news.

Except they sat on the story for months. Wonder why? Also, FitsNews, a blog that covered this better than any major media outlet, was overwhelmed with traffic today causing server troubles.
Fits was right from the very beginning. I think he deserves some credit on this.

I found this one to be particularly compelling as well as scathing.

Oh, and it appears they've had these e-mails since December. Sort of like Fox sitting on the Ensign story?

Major props to the girl who sat in the airport waiting for him to show up, when no other news org thought to do it.

Well, apparently no other news organization was in possession of e-mails documenting his relationship with an Argentine woman.
Where's the outrage toward The State? They've known this since December, including the period when this clown was trying to deprive the state of billions in economic stimulus money, and they sat on the story. Do you think it might have been relevant, when we were hearing the story of the African-American girl student who wrote to the President about the physical condition at her school, to say, oh by the way, the Governor who is "on principle" blocking acceptance of the money needed to fix this problem went on a state-paid trip to South America last June, and here are some e-mails this married man sent to a woman who lives there? If a newspaper doesn't owe it to its readers to give them all the information at its disposal, then it's nothing more than a tool for its owners to exploit the public for its own purposes.

No doubt if you receive something like this from an anonymous source, a newspaper would have to verify that the emails were in fact the governor's and if all you have is a governor writing love notes to a woman--then maybe it's better to keep digging and try to find more to the story before going to print.
It's obvious though that these emails going public today was the real reason that Sanford made his confession.

so you guys above think that newspapers ought to be in the business of outing elected office holders for having extra-marital affairs?
i don't care if the affair reveals a politician's hypocrisy, it isn't news or anyone's business but the family's unless the story involves questions of corruption (in the case of ensign, payroll shenanigans) or competence (in the case of sanford, being incommunicado/AWOL).

It's ridiculous to think the State should have printed these e-mails without one bit of corroborating evidence.
And I doubt Sanford knew the State had these e-mails. He fessed up because the truth was bound to come out as a result of all the lies he told about his activities the past week.

The State is by far the best paper in SC (I believe they're a McClatchey pub).
The paper here in Charleston is a terrible rag, not fit to line your kitty litter box.
