TPMDC Morning Roundup

Sanford's Office: He's Hiking
Gov. Mark Sanford's (R-SC) office told reporters last night that he is hiking the Appalachian Trail. However, they apparently do not know exactly where is along the Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine -- but interestingly enough, does not pass through South Carolina. "He's an avid outdoorsman," said his spokesman. "Nobody's ever accused our governor of being conventional."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. ET, in the Rose Garden. At 2:15 p.m. ET, he will meet one-on-one with President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, and they will have an expanded meeting at 2:45 p.m. ET. At 4:45 p.m. ET, Obama will meet with Sec. of Defense Robert Gates.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will travel to Perrysburg, Ohio, to chair a meeting of the White House Task Force on Middle Class Families. The topic of the meeting will be "Promoting American Manufacturing in the 21st Century." In the evening, Biden will travel to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend a Democratic National Committee event.

Poll: Declining Confidence In Stimulus
A new ABC/Washington Post poll finds that confidence in the stimulus program is declining, though it still does represent a majority opinion. The poll found 52% of Americans saying the package has succeeded or will succeed in restoring the economy -- down from 59% two months ago. The falloff has been most pronounced in the Midwest, falling to below 50% from a 60% figure two months ago.

Poll: Public Approves Of Obama On Iran
The new ABC/Washington Post poll also shows a majority approving of President Obama's performance on the situation in Iran: Approve 52%, Disapprove 36%. Many Republicans have attacked Obama's approach as too timid or even tacitly helpful to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but so far the public agrees with his cautious take on it.

GOP Senators To Begin Campaign Against Sotomayor
Roll Call reports that Senate Republicans are set to begin making their case against the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and others making floor speeches outlining their objections. Their grievances against her will reportedly include her involvement with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and her overall judicial philosophy.

Hillary Cancels Trip Due To Elbow Recovery
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton has cancelled her upcoming trip to Greece and Italy, due to her continuing recovery from surgery to fix her broken elbow. Clinton had been scheduled to meet with foreign leaders to discuss the matters of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Middle East peace process, and the tensions between Russia and Georgia.

DOJ Meeting With Gay-Rights Activists
Justice Department lawyers are set to meet today with gay-rights activists, in the wake of serious objections by the LGBT community over the Obama Administration's legal brief defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. "We feel like it needs to be talked about face to face and hopefully the points will be driven home," said Kevin Cathcart of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Despite ‘Hike in the Woods,’ GOP Still Looks to Mark Sanford For Its ‘Deliverance’

Is "hiking the appalachian trail" the new "wide stance"?

user-pic

actually, according to the roll call article a GOP aide says that her 'empathy' will be a central focus of the objections.

Just a few random thoughts:

1) I hate to say this, but Sanford's behavior reminds me of my best friend, at the time in her life before she had a handle on her bipolar disorder. She would randomly take off and leave everyone in her life to try to cover for her without really saying what was going on. To me Sanford's disappearance reeks of some kind of temper tantrum, like when I was a little kid and I would threaten to run away from home when things didn't go my way.
2) Why are Republicans wasting time mounting a campaign against Sotomayor when many Republicans have already admitted that they know she will be confirmed? I can understand developing a set of hard hitting questions for the confirmation hearing, but isn't a larger campaign just another waste of time that will hurt them with Hispanic voters? Or am I just being too logical about a party that has lost all logic?
3) Americans need to get past their need for instant gratification. The numbers for Obama on the stimulus are going down when it's not even rational that the stimulus would have had time to work yet. Did people really think that a problem that took eight years to create could be all better in less than six months? Are we as a nation really that naive?

Are we as a nation really that naive?

Yes. And impatient, and ahistorical, and we have short attention spans in the bargain. And if that's not enough...oooh, shiny thing!

user-pic

The stimulus will really be kicked in by 2010 elections, which is a reason the GOP are against it.
Is it possible that Sanford went missing because he had some sort of plastic surgery? The only time I've had a friend go missing they were getting some work done. It's hard to believe that Sanford doesn't know that the media is searching for him, so one has to believe he is hiding out for some reason.

user-pic

Actually I'm worried that it really won't, because it's just not big enough. Really it's barely even big enough to counterbalance the contractionary budgets of the states, so in effect there may be no stimulus at all.

user-pic

1. As big an idiot as Sanford is, this meme of "irresponsible disappearance" is off the mark. Going hiking is a perfectly legitimate activity. And it's really okay to be away from communications technology for a while. It's even healthy.

2. The irony that no one is noticing and should be getting the attention is this: the trail this anti-fed moron is hiking would not exist were it not for the federal government -- specifically, the National Park Service and USDA-Forest Service.

user-pic

yeah, it's perfectly legitimate, except that you might want to, y'know, mention it to your employees and family members, especially when, y'know, you're the chief executive of an entire state. You have just a teensy bit more responsibility than a systems analyst who goes camping for a weekend.
Or, maybe he's just trying to prove how unnecessary government is by disappearing like this. They should be glad he didn't take off during hurricane season.

user-pic

Ummm... It is hurricane season. That said, I agree with the thought.

"Nobody's ever accused our governor of being conventional."

OR

Sane.
