Sestak Talks Political Strategy Against Arlen Specter
When Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) makes his primary challenge to Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) official, he won't have the Washington establishment on his side and he'll probably find himself significantly outspent by his famous opponent. But he has some tricks of his own up his sleeve.
"If you have the right message, and you're consistent in putting it out there," Sestak told me, then you still have a shot. "Sen. Clinton, running against Sen. Obama, was outspent four-to-one in Pennsylvania and yet somehow her message seemed to resonate." *
He describes "the message" as a key issue. But what will his message be? In an interview with TPMDC, Sestak provided some clues.
"Arlen has spent the last three decades in Washington as a senator and has a lot of experience in the Washington senatorial establishment," Sestak said. "The same one that made a deal with him."
By contrast, "I come from 31 years in the military."
Furthermore, Sestak says Specter's record will haunt him. "I went to Washington to oppose the policies of President Bush," he says by way of contrast to Specter who "supported them."
A few weeks ago, Sestak told me that Specter would need to prove himself a reliable Democrat on key issues if he wanted to avoid a challenge, but ultimately he decided that Specter just can't be trusted.
"[W]hen you see someone who has voted so consistently with President Bush--I think it's four out of five times--that voted on issues that have been very instrumental in terms of harming our national security...or for the economic policies of the Bush administration.... That raised even graver doubts about how is he going to now forsake those kinds of beliefs in any consistent way."
Sestak went on. "I think the fact that the change was now, rather than several years ago when our nation could have used more Democratic votes to help forestall some of the policies of President Bush. That would have been a more telling party switch."
As I noted last week, Sestak already has a key supporter in Pennsylvania--former Rep. Joe Hoeffer, who challenged Specter in 2004. I asked Sestak how he felt about the endorsement and he lit up. "I feel very honored," he said.
*Due to a transcription error, this quote initially misstated Sestak's comments on the 2008 Pennsylvania primary. As Rep. Sestak suggested, Hillary Clinton--and not Barack Obama--won that race.

"'Sen. Obama was outspent four-to-one in Pennsylvania and yet somehow (Hillary Clinton's) message didn't seem to resonate." Is Sestak misremembering or something? She won by 10 percent.

I think Obama spent more than Clinton in PA. She tried to keep up, which is why she still has a huge campaign debt.

Hillary lost ground all the way up until the primary. She was up huge in early polls (by 20+ points), but only won by 9. All she did was bleed support in PA.

If I were Sestak, I would get out there and introduce myself to the rest of the state first and then start running ads showing everyone that Specter is simply a Republican with a 'D' next to his name. Prove to everyone that Specter's move to the Democratic Party for was political survival and not due to a shift in ideology. Use lots and lots of lovely pictures of Specter and Bush together and display how much he supported the Bush agenda over the last 8 years. Also, Sestek should be all over this Card Check thing and siding strongly with unions ASAP.

You mean tell the truth? :)
Sestak's got a strong case to make to the voters - based on fact. I actually like his chances.

specter is a self-serving snake and I think Sestak may have a real chance of beating him a la Ned Lamont vs. Lieberman.
If I were still a PA dem, the choice in this primary would be no contest. All Sestak has to do is promote the same progressive agenda Specter waffles on.

It's Joe Hoeffel.
And Arlen Specter has no support amongst the majority of the Dems in PA. Neither does Sestak at the moment.

Now it is getting interesting. I don't mind voting for Specter if he is nominated, but I'd much rather vote for Sestak.

I live in Pennsylvania and would like a new senator, but I can't find any info about Sestak's positions. His web site is out of date. And this interview is short on facts.

Sestak also fails to mention that Obama won Delaware County (Sestak's own county), not Clinton (whom he supported).
This is total hypocrisy:
'Furthermore, Sestak says Specter's record will haunt him. "I went to Washington to oppose the policies of President Bush," he says by way of contrast to Specter who "supported them." '
Sestak campaigned on timetables, timetables, timetables, then VOTED TO GIVE BUSH A BLANK CHECK on Iraq. No accountability. Sestak also voted with the GOP to fund Cheney's office, despite Cheney claiming the VP wasn't part of the executive branch.
After those votes, he's got a lot of audacity to say: "rather than several years ago when our nation could have used more Democratic votes to help forestall some of the policies of President Bush."
Sestak had strongly resisted any suggestion of investigating Bush for impeachment (despite running on a platform of accountability).
Card Check:
Sestak has waffled on this with local union reps. He had a chance to come out strongly for the full EFCA, but instead is following Specter's LEAD on the modified version. It appears that Sestak doesn't want to speak out to strongly on a position he'll have to backtrack on.
Healthcare:
Specter's been a leader on promoting stem cell and other health research and fought the GOP to do it.
Nominations:
Specter came out in support of Sotomayor BEFORE Sestak did.

ProgressivePunch.org ranks Sestak with a lifetime progressive score of 93.02% for a rank of 83/433. 100% on Family Planning, Government Checks on Corporate Power, Housing and Labor Rights. He's in the high 80's and 90's in all other categories. This progressive ranking is on the same order as Leahy, Harkin, Schumer, and Levin, and minimally lower than Kennedy and Boxer.
On the other hand we have Arlen the chameleon. Specter has a lifetime progressive score of 37.06% which ranks 59/99 in the Senate. Compare Ben Nelson who ranks 58/99 has a still lousy but roughly 40% higher lifetime progressive score of 52.45%. That is the best for any Republicanistic member of the Senate, but it's still on the far side of that 40% chasm. He has a lifetime record that screams, "Don't trust me!", even as his lying lips say, "I'm your man!"
Progressives should heed the message of Specter's record and give their support to Sestak.
