Tancredo Aide Pleads Guilty to Karate Chopping Pedestrian, Calling Her 'Nigger'

Remember how Tom Tancredo went on CNN last week and called Sonia Sotomayor a racist, accusing her falsely of being a member of a "Latino KKK"? Well, if racism so offends him, how does he explain this?

On July 7, 2007, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at Jefferson and M Street, Northwest, in Washington, D.C., defendant was walking down the street making offensive remarks when he encountered the complainant, Ms. [REDACTED], who is African-American. The defendant uttered, "Nigger," as he delivered a karate chop to Ms. [REDACTED]'s head.

That defendant is named Marcus Epstein--a former Tancredo speechwriter who now works as executive director of Tancredo's political action committee.

Epstein pled guilty to the charge, but, according to Dave Weigel of The Washington Independent, he'll remain on the job "until he leaves for law school in the fall."

Law school? Good luck getting past your ethical fitness review board when you try to get admitted to the bar, buddy.

user-pic

Exactly what I thought. Wait until he gets to the part where he is asked if he has ever been arrested, and then has to attach a separate sheet explaining the circumstances. Fun, fun reading.

I'd love to see how he gusses up karate-chopping a woman and calling her that word.

"I was stopped and questioned by police after, due to a miscommunication, I encountered a person while in transport from my workplace and, reasonably apprehending for my own safety, applied a martial arts defensive move to the cranial region of said person, while at the same time, again reasonably apprehensive for my safety, attempted to get my potential would-be attacker to flee by saying, in a loud tone, a word designed to cause such offense as to result in my attacker fleeing. I was convicted, and am heartily sorry."

user-pic

As I read further, I note that the crime took place on a Saturday evening, in the summer, at 7. In Georgetown.

Boozey f*cking kids with their Long Island Ice Teas from Sequoia.

user-pic

...a law school such as Pat Robertson's Regent University.

One of the faculty support pages on website quotes Ephesians 6, 6-7 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of god from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the lord, not men.

user-pic

i'm sure jay sekulow will have a spot for epstein when he graduates law school.

user-pic

The N-bomb with...a karate chop? You're really racist when the old ways of calling us "nigger" just aren't good enough anymore...

user-pic

Yep!

user-pic

It's called "neo-conservatism."

user-pic

I can see that in the very near future no one will admit to being a Republican. Past experience is that they will all suddenly become Independents. If someone does acknowledge being a Repub it will very likely be accompanied with a blush of shame.

Of course people like Limburger and that incredible chairman the party has, will be beyond feeling shame, as usual.

Republicanism will become "the Politics that dare not reveal its name".

user-pic

Actually, doesn't Limbaugh even shun the "Republican" label? I seem to remember from the various clips I see here and there him making a distinction between being "conservative" (which he associates with himself) and "Republican" (which he seems to shy away from).

Of course, I don't know if he does that to try to help the Republican party or if it's because he's ashamed of it.

user-pic

Clearly, Rush needs to apologize to Rush.

user-pic

hoppy,

heh heh heh, truly. :-)

user-pic

I'm among those calling them rethugs -- sufficiently justified by their penchant for torture -- but this is ridiculous. They should quit and become a biker gang.

user-pic

That's already the norm in the comments at Politico. They skew toward vitriolic, fact-free right wing freakism by about 10:1, but 90% of the time, the freak claims to be an independent or a Democrat.

user-pic

Great observation--because after you get over the from-another-universe post-modern evil weirdness of it, you realize...that's what Republicanism is all about, after all. Boil it all down, all the free-market flat-tax no abortions freedom fries mission accomplished bulls--t, and that's what it all really comes down to--karate-chopping some person upside the head and calling them n--.

user-pic

I doubt that many in the log cabin go for tea parties. That's a bizarre statement on a number of levels.

My question is: when will the Democratic tent stretch too big and fall down? One of the small pleasures of the last eight years was watching the moderately cognizant Republicans squirm to distance themselves from the neo-cons. "I'm a Republican, but I'm not a total a-hole!". I don't want to have to identify myself as Democrat separate from the crazies.

Who am I kidding? I'm just my own special brand of crazy.

user-pic

Speaking of far-right Republicans, Tom Coburn just announced he would run for re-election. He had repeatedly said he might retire, which would removed from Congress one of its most conservative members (by far).

user-pic

Is it wrong that I find this hilarious?

user-pic

If it is the I don't wanna be right. :)

user-pic

Ditto. I'm sure it was no fun for the victim, but she presumably survived without serious injury. And maybe she'll derive some satisfaction from the fact that she played a small role in bringing down a small part of the Republican party (since this took place in DC, I'm assuming she's a Democrat).

user-pic

I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type! This story is funny as hell.

Who in their right mind walks down the street, sees a person they don't know and gives them a karate chop and a racial slur .. . out of the blue???

It sounds like a Benny Hill skit.

user-pic
Who in their right mind

aah, and there you hit the nail on the head (or karate chopped it, if you will)

user-pic

Hmm. Looks like Tom has different hiring criteria for Speechwriter and PAC head than he does for Supreme Court Justice? Guess "non-racist" is in the "preferred" vs "required" section of his job ads. :-|

user-pic

Epstein may have been high on ziocaine at the time of the assault. Diminished capacity.

user-pic

Tommy Tancredo and Marcus Epstein starring in "R is for Racist" coming to a theater near you!
Marcus Epstein makes his debut as a mild mannered speech writer turned high impact karate bigot! You've never seen women attacked in the street like this before!

user-pic

LOL!!

user-pic

LMAORTF!

user-pic

According to the story, Tancredo has stated that Sotomayor “appears to be a racist.”

Perhaps his objection is based on her failure to commit.

user-pic

DOgger,

Tancredo peeks out from under his hood and whispers to Epstein; 'Sotomayer is a racist!'

user-pic

Maybe she needs to add some karate to it to convince him.

user-pic

Tancredo's Wikipedia page states the following:

"As a Republican student activist Tancredo spoke in support of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado he became eligible to serve in Vietnam in June 1969. Tancredo has said he went for his physical, telling doctors he had been treated for depression, and eventually got a "1-Y" deferment[6]."

So now we know what kind of "patriot" Mr. Tancredo is, the same as Lush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney.

Why is it that the cowards are always the bullies?

user-pic

I-Y? That would be Y for Yellow, right?

user-pic

What law school?

user-pic

Apparently, Epstein "has been admitted to the University of Virginia School of Law and will begin taking classes in August 2009."

Last paragraph: http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=85:youth-for-western-civilization-co-founder-faces-sentencing-on-hate-crime-assault-in-july&catid=34:ye-olde-white-power-chopping-block

user-pic

Ah, of course. He's going to be a wahoo.

user-pic

As well as a yahoo.

user-pic

Man, that one was served up just right! But, before I could swing, you had to step up.

user-pic

As a graduate of UVa undergrad and UVa Law, I resent that remark. I also resent the fact that this guy is scheduled to go to my school in the fall. I hope UVa rescinds its admission. This guy does not belong there.

user-pic

So.. who do we contact there?

user-pic

Ah, the Old Dominion, where he can keep a close eye on the macaca peril.

user-pic

well it's not too late for them to change their minds.

user-pic

A poster boy for self-hatred. The guy is so xenophobic he'd probably happily kick HIMSELF out of the country.

user-pic

Nothing to do with your comment or the post -- it's just always damn fine to see someone who pays homage to the great Sgt. Chip Saunders, King Company!

user-pic

"Awright... lets move out!"

user-pic

Thank you for using the real word instead of calling it "the n-word." I have always felt like using that euphemism lets people off the hook instead of forcing us as readers or listeners to hear or see the actual ugliness that can be spewed with the word. If we say Epstein used the n-word, it's like saying Epstein had to take a poo poo. If we instead say, Epstein called her a nigger, we get to report the actual ugliness of this racist man taking a shit on another human being -- much more visceral, but accurate.

user-pic

And then you go and change it, so nevermind.

user-pic

And then back. So, mind :-)

user-pic

Where the hell is this guy going to law school? Liberty U? Rescinding acceptances are pretty rare, but this seems like a pretty good case to, you know, NOT LET A RACIST PRACTICE LAW.

user-pic

Any schmuck can get a law degree. Passing the Bar is another trick altogether. There's an ethical fitness review that weeds out most of the blatent wackos. Most.

user-pic

Given that his conviction occurred only recently, and taking into account the dishonesty of most Republicans, there is a good chance UVa does not know they have admitted a hate criminal.

Anyone who wants to get involved can send a politely worded e-mail to lawadmit@virginia.edu. I imagine letters from alumni would carry the most weight.

user-pic

Then, there is John Yoo, and Alberto Gonzales, et al.

user-pic

This happens often enough that there is a specific crime they can plead guilty to? :/

user-pic

Here's an image of Epstein preparing to do battle Karate Kid style while African American Girl Scouts pass by.
http://www.vdare.com/images/epstein-vdare.jpg

He's a cross between George W and Daniel San!
http://www.theamericancause.org/uploads/images/epstienpic.JPG

user-pic

He does bear an uncanny resemblance to Dubya, notwithstanding their different heritages. It's the "I may be a moron, but I'm a smug moron" expression that does it.

user-pic

Just like Bill Maher said, if you're a republican you're not necessarily a racist, but if you're a racist you're probably a republican.
Btw, when limbaugh says that sotomayor is a racist, perhaps we should listen, after all, he does know a thing or two about racism!!!!!!!!
(in case anyones snark meter is malfunctioning, I don't actually think we should listen to rush douchebaugh!)

user-pic

Hahaha! I love it. Here's Marcus Epstein, self-proclaimed etymological naif, and the alleged hubbub surrounding the use of the term "black hole" at a city council meeting, where someone objected to the phrase. This reminded young Marcus of another incident regarding the use of the word "niggardly":

When the Howard incident occurred, I was a sophomore in high school. I will be the first to admit that at the time I didn’t know what the word “niggardly” meant. I would like to think that public servants in the District of Columbia with college degrees would have had a better vocabulary than a high school sophomore, but I’m not all that shocked that they did not.

Marcus sells himself short. His vocabulary is apparently a bit more extensive than he lets on.

user-pic

Holy crap, the hits keep coming.

I wish I could have made this up, but it's true. this is from an article written by Marcus Epstein, featured on the site of something called VDARE. Note that it was written in April 2008, after Epstein was arrested for his hate crime -- a fact not mentioned in his article:

In my last column, I examined how the Thought Police have moved from swastikas to nooses in the list of officially outlawable "hate symbols". The same thing is happening with words. It would be futile to even begin to catalog all the people whose careers have been destroyed for uttering "nigger" or even words that sound like "nigger" no matter the context.

Well, not impossible, Marcus. I can think where to begin.

user-pic

The fact he's Jewish/Korean makes this crap sicker and more hilarious at the same time.
I'd like to punch him in the face but I'm guessing that's his objective.

user-pic

I've always wondered something, in light of the ridiculous term "reverse racism" - when someone that's a part of another minority group slurs another, what is that? Sideways racism? And with him being half-white, it only gets more confusing...

user-pic

And when the white half is also jewish it gets really fun. That's triple reverse racism!

user-pic

Actually it is profoundly sad. I have met more than one person who thinks that they'll gain acceptance amongst the majority community by vilifying some other minority.

Also...Lets not ignore the class factor here, If Epstein had been a grocer or other local merchant I doubt he would be insulting his customers.

There is something really ugly about this, how can someone so young, and given every opportunity, regress to this behavior? It's not like he grew up in a trailer and drives a pick up decorated with the confederate battle flag.

user-pic

Ahhh you made the fatal flaw of assuming only Southern poor Whites can hate. There are plenty of middle class, upper middle class and wealthy racists.
Many immigrant communities grab hold of the racist views of the dominant culture towards African Americans too. So it isn't out of the question that he was raised on a diet of lox, kimche and hate.

user-pic

"...Ahhh you made the fatal flaw of assuming only Southern poor Whites can hate....."

No I didnt'. I just think the most fortunate have the least excuse. That being said no one has an excuse to be racist.

Even more shocking is upper middle class families who affect a redneck pride identity because they think it's cute. If they only knew that the folks who coined the term thought the redneck as barely abovr the n*****.

user-pic

I had a 7-year-old kid call me a nigger once. Age ain't nothing but a number, folks.

user-pic

Apparently Mr. Epstein is also an executive director of Team America PAC; who's biggest fear seems to be the wholesale release of criminals (read minority criminals) from jails.

Of course when I hear "Team America" I can only think of this. Hmmm...maybe there's a connection. After all, they're the "World Police".

user-pic

America! Fuck Yeah!

user-pic

Marcus's 15 minutes of fame are only beginning. Rush will be sure to interview him sypathetically, the Freepers will make a hero out of him, and he's sure to be an honored speaker at the next CPAC convention. I smell a book deal, too.

user-pic

This story is one small chop for the Right Wing ... and one large chop for mankind. Hi-YAAA!

user-pic

Hai Kiba!

Gymkata!

user-pic

marcusyepstein@gmail.com

Email this tool and try and see what his excuse for the karate chop is

user-pic

Brilliant East Sider! What I will ask him is ... Marcus, I used to practice martial arts. Did you execute a reverse karate chop to go along with your charges of reverse racism?

user-pic

Josh's phrasign is unfortunate:

"might be one of the new generation of violent racist freaks -- being himself half Jewish and half Korean. "

I'm sure he didn't mean to suggest that this new generation of "freaks" is due to being multiracial. I wouldn't think being mixed race would make one more of a "freak" for having racist views. Would a racist caucasian be any less of a freak?

user-pic

I think people are more accustomed to the runofthemill caucasian racist freak.

user-pic

Something to send the folks at lawadmit@virginia.edu:

http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/images/Epstein/img072.jpg

user-pic

Does the University of Virginia know about this? My law school would have rescinded the acceptance.

Is there a point to training racist and unethical lawyers? It's not what we expect of our profession.

user-pic

Good thoughts, let's disbar this chump. Chop Chop!

user-pic

If Marcus loses his spot in UVA's law school because of this, he is sure to file a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against UVA, TPM, anybody who emails him, and certainly the woman he karate-chopped. If she hadn't had the racist audacity to be on the sidewalk when he walked by, then none of this would have happened. It's all her fault. Oh, and the liberals too.

user-pic

I don't know what point Josh was trying to make, but Epstein's racial/ethnic background really is irrelevant. It's an unfortunate fact that minorities are not immune from holding racist views themselves. My 82-yr-old FIL is Mexican-American, and the racist statements he's made on a few occasions would curl your hair.

user-pic

I disagree. Just because everyone can be racist regardless of creed or color doesn't mean every incident is the same.

user-pic

Cosign. His multi-ethnic background makes it worse. I was going to say funny or ironic but I'll stick with worse.

user-pic

Why does it make it worse??

Absolutely not. It is IRRELEVANT.

If someone is an asshole, they are an asshole. Not a (fillin ethnic category here) asshole.

That comes worrying close to racism in my view.

user-pic

The reason some (myself included) perceive it as being worse when a person of color exhibits bigotry or racism is the fact they embrace that negative pattern of behavior that undoubtedly has been used against them at some point. The (freakish?)irony of a man who has felt the sting of racism letting loose with the n-word and a karate chop to an innocent woman in the streets of our nation's capital is apparent to most people here.

user-pic

Why would that make it worse?

What you are describing is the definition of a double standard.

user-pic

not sure what you are disagreeing with....
#1 - that his racial makeup is irrelevant
#2 - that minorities can be racist
#3 - that writer's FIL has hurled hair-curling insults?

If we can leap on to any word or implication that some dumb schmuck utters, and label them a racist and "the worst of the worst"....then I don't think we can be splitting hairs about what is slight racism, what is full-blown racism, or who practices racism differently from another.
You know? We will go to pretty extreme lengths to label someone a racist. Maybe they said "you people" or "them" or "those" in some manner we don't like...and boom! they're a racist.

I do understand that there is a different context between a black family in their home talking; and somebody yelling nigger and hitting them. But can you really say the black family isn't teaching racism if they say you shouldn't trust white people, or to watch out for them, or they are all alike, or they all behave a certain way.?

Is a black person saying "all white people do x"....the same thing as a white person saying "all black people do x"?

Does the word 'nigger' really make the one so much worse than the other? I don't like the word, and it has such a terrible history of hurtful use. Surely more hurtful history than the disparaging slurs blacks have come up with for whites.

I think racism/sexism/ageism are illusory, subjective, inaccurate and improper labels for people. It is often times just bad education and human nature, being turned into one of the worst things you can be tagged with.

Is someone who says "men are all alike" or "men are all after the same thing" or "I hate men" a sexist?

Is someone who says "all women are x" a sexist?

How is it different from Arabs hating Jews?

I think we have to find some empathy for people, instead of this knee-jerk witch-hunt mentality.
If your Dad or community or family taught you to be like that, you really don't stand a whole lot of chance.
I am not talking about Tancredo's Aide here....just aiming this at the racism issue in general.

What the Tancredo Aide did was wrong. He should have known better. He could be rehabilitated, though.... or learn how to come to better grips with the world out there.

user-pic

I thought it was rather obvious - "everyone can be racist"; "doesn't mean every incident's the same" - and considering you claim not to know what I was disagreeing with, you sure did write a lot.

It's not a stretch to call him a racist, guy. Dude called her a "nigger". That's not "you people", or even "boy" - "nigger". Sorry, but I have no idea why you even bothered to recycle with that term paper of yours.

My contention was that I think that it does matter that he's part minority, for I'm quite doubtful that he hasn't been called a name of some sort that had to do with his racial heritage. And that makes it different than if he was some Anglo-Saxon kid from Mississippi. Sorry, it does.

user-pic

user-pic

How is it different from Arabs hating Jews

Gee, do you think it has anything to do with Israel calling itself "the Jewish State" and claiming they represent and work in the interest of the world's Jews?

And really, if you were an Afro-American parent, would you advise your children to trust white people underall circumstances.
You, of course, have instructed your children to always trust minorities completely, and never regard anything they say or do with ambivalence?

user-pic

I think it is more relevant and shocking that this kid is plugged into the right wing government & media elites.

user-pic

Hm, he was detained by the Secret Service? Is that odd, or just a coincidence?

user-pic

Epstein; 'Look, don't get me wrong, I have spics, kikes, and darkies among my friends.'

user-pic

Yeah...not necessary, dude.

user-pic

So assaulting the poor woman and calling her the N-word doesn't get him fired.....

Man, oh man, these GOoPers are the gift that just keeps on giving!

user-pic

A karate chop?? Seriously...

user-pic

Why is it all these republican apparatchiks look (and usually sound) like eunuchs?

user-pic

Why am I not surprised at what this low life did?
Well, because he's a right winger, that's why.

user-pic

I have one word to say: Perfect.

user-pic

Throwing in an N-bomb with a karate chop? That's taking the old cliche about "adding insult to injury" far too literally.

user-pic

Still not liking the use of the word FREAK to refer to someone of mixed race.

Would a white racist be called a freak??

This veers a little too close to the view that mixed ethnic people are abberations or strange.

Not liking this, Josh. Call the guy a racist asshole. Stop calling him a freak!

user-pic

Law school admissions, and bar admissions, may be denied based on crimes of "moral turpitude," which are usually crimes of dishonesty, like perjury, larceny, embezzlement, or fraud. Crimes of violence, such as assault or battery, even racially motivated violence, might not get someone bounced from law school, but lying about an arrest or conviction could very well result in a denial of admission to law school, and perhaps even a denial of a license to practice law.

You see, the legal profession can tolerate a**holes, even violent a**holes, but liars would be a real problem because of lot of what makes the legal system work is trusting that the opposing lawyer isn't lying to you.

user-pic

Tancredo taught Epstein everything he knows when it comes to being a bigot.

Way to go Tommy Boy! Were you the one that taught Limbaugh, too? Or did he teach you?

user-pic

Re: Babe Buchanan's apologia for her erstwhile employee that he was "lynched" by bloggers and one reporter.

Note that Mr. Epstein was an employee of a political organization, his crime was a public crime and newsworthy. His personal problems are only revelant as mitagating factors at point of sentencing. I think that was done. His firing or resignation from a political organization are a foregone conclusion. It's called accountability and responsibility not lynching. Stop whining, Babe.
