Vitter Fundraising Letter Doesn't Mention Protecting Marriage
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), the champion of social conservatism whose career became mired in the D.C. Madam prostitution scandal of 2007, has a new fundraising letter that warns of the liberal/socialist threats on a whole range of issues -- though one particular item is mysteriously missing.
The letter warns of the threat posed by Democrats on such issues as abortion, union card-check, the dreaded Fairness Doctrine to eliminate conservative talk-radio, and big liberal spending.
This sentence sums it up: "The left-wing blob of trial lawyers, union bosses, environmental zealots, abortion activists, socialists and gun grabbers along with the Washington Democrat establishment have already trained their sights on me."
But there is one issue that we're used to seeing from conservatives like Vitter, which doesn't show up at all: Protecting the sanctity of marriage.

Seriously. It suggests someone on Vitter's staff has a scintilla of self-awareness.
You'd probably still need nanotechnology to find it, though.

Yup, nothing about moral decay in the big cities, the liberal coasts, a true plum in American heartland political discourse for the last hundred years or so. Abortion and guns are the only social issues he dares mention. The rest are all about protecting big business' profits.

That's easy. If all they're left with on the social issues front is abortion and guns, they're still going to be able to uphold the sanctity of shotgun marriages.
And for social conservatives, that's what it's all about, frankly.

I guess none of the prostitutes he patronized ever needed an abortion.

However, they certainly needed a gun!

This seems so unimportant as to not deserve comment. Iran? Climate Change Bill? Health Care? Financial Crisis? Honduras, for Pete's sake!
And you're harping on what Vitter didn't say in a letter? I'm sure this is entertaining to some and makes us all feel better about ourselves, but get over it already.
I think TPM and its readers have more important things to do.

No. I truly think we should throw these guys out of office - based on their moral depravity. They are fully square with evil, or bent with it, however you'd put that. Look, the Clintons had an open marriage, there was no promise broken when Bill got something on the side. But these Republican *ssh*les did break promises, to their spouses, to their public, to their God. There should be no forgiving them.
And yeah, for them to continue to campaign for future office, to put out flyers that couldn't be more dishonest if they were composed by Satan himself, is well worth commentary.

Won't you join me, Sen. John Ensign, Sen. Larry Craig and Gov. Mark Sanford in ridding America of the moral poison spewed out by liberal Democrats?

Is it still adultery if you're wearing a diaper?

More importantly: Did he propose a tax cut ... for diapers?

Vitter should go hang himself, like his two prostitutes were supposed to have done.

Woo Hoo! Open season on the sanctity of marriage!
