AMA President: We Urge Committees To Pass House Health Care Bill
As promised, here's the American Medical Association's official statement: "This legislation includes a broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform," said J. James Rohack, M.D., AMA president. "We urge the House committees of jurisdiction to pass the bill for consideration by the full House."
You can read the rest of the statement below the fold, but note that Rohack doesn't just urge passage of the bill out of committees. Or at least he seems to go farther than that. "We support passage of H.R. 3200, and we look forward to additional constructive dialogue as the long process of passing a health reform bill continues."
But he also calls this "an important step, but one of many steps in the process."
AMA SUPPORTS H.R. 3200, "America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009"House Bill Expands Access to High-Quality, Affordable Health Care for Americans
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the American Medical Association sent a letter to House leaders supporting H.R. 3200, "America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009."
"This legislation includes a broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform," said J. James Rohack, M.D., AMA president. "We urge the House committees of jurisdiction to pass the bill for consideration by the full House." H.R. 3200 includes provisions key to effective, comprehensive health reform, including:
- Coverage to all Americans through health insurance market reforms
- A choice of plans through a health insurance exchange
- An end to coverage denials based on pre-existing conditions
- Fundamental Medicare reform, including repeal of the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula
- Additional funding for primary care services, without reductions on specialty care
- Individual responsibility for health insurance, including premium assistance to those who need it
- Prevention and wellness initiatives to help keep Americans healthy
- Initiatives to address physician workforce concerns
"The status quo is unacceptable," Dr. Rohack said. "We support passage of H.R. 3200, and we look forward to additional constructive dialogue as the long process of passing a health reform bill continues. This is an important step, but one of many steps in the process. The AMA is actively engaged with Congress and the administration to achieve health reform that best meets the needs of patients and physicians. We are committed to passing health reform this year consistent with principles of pluralism, freedom of choice, freedom of practice, and universal access for patients."

I know the week isn't over yet, but I would have to call this a pretty decent week for Democrats. Things can change quickly, but so far I'm rather pleased with my Party.

The war of words and imagines will now begin with at least two real targets to blast away in an attempt to blow them up: the House and Senate Bills.

Why the change of heart? Maybe Obama was right about giving a speech in the lion's den.

Obama is handling this magnificently.
Had we hunkered down as some were suggesting and simply ignored the Repubs, healthcare reform, like under Bill Clinton would be DOA.
The opposition is not going to give up, but reform advocates, thanks to the President, have recaptured the "Big MO" on REAL healthcare reform.

Wow. This has real potential to fatally undercut Sen. Fuckus ("D"- MT) and his scurvy crew. I'm knocking on wood.
I'd rather have a bill they oppose too, but we don't live in that universe, and I can live with the House bill. There is NO room for watering it down further, though. That's why the AMA supporting the House bill is big.
