Bill Kristol Stands By Palin
Here's Bill Kristol's analysis of Sarah Palin's resignation:
Kristol: A Contrarian Take
If Palin wants to run in 2012, why not do exactly what she announced today? It's an enormous gamble - but it could be a shrewd one.
After all, she's freeing herself from the duties of the governorship. Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues - and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska. I suppose she'll take a hit for leaving the governorship early - but how much of one? She's probably accomplished most of what she was going to get done as governor, and is leaving a sympatico lieutenant governor in charge.
And haven't conservatives been lamenting the lack of a national leader? Well, now she'll try to be that. She may not succeed. Everything rests on her talents, and on her performance. She'll be under intense and hostile scrutiny, and she'll have to perform well.
All in all, it's going to be a high-wire act. The odds are against her pulling it off. But I wouldn't bet against it.

It would make more sense if she wasn't out of office at the start of 2011 anyway -- she could just opt to not run again instead of resigning a year and a half earlier.
She's just quitting halfway through her term.

Bullshit. Charles Kraphammer just pronounced her done on Faux (h/t C & L).
If Faux--and it's toadies--are calling her toast, she's toast. And if lack of experience was her big detraction on the trail in '08 (and polling showed it was), she's just made it worse. She can talk in front of the Orange County chapter of Old White Men Against Socialism for Jesus all she wants, but it doesn't make that problem go away. She's not even a *ONE-term* governor, now.
No, this is Little Billie trying to spin a serious negative. And when has Little Billie ever been right about anything? Ever?

Yup.
And I love your comment even more b/c my hubby calls him "Kraphammer," too. :)

Given that she had zero chance of the Presidency before, ANYTHING she did would improve her chances, albeit marginally. I could become a US citizen and it would improve my chances, but I would still need to get an amendment passed.
I suspect though that Josh is right here and that the real explanation will become apparent before too long. My bet is that it will be a financial scandal that is a bit tricky to explain. Or it may be something that would destroy her credibility with her base, like finding out that she had an abortion in her teens.

Have an opinion, Bill. This is a nothing statement. It's a gamble, but it could work? Well, sure, why not? I mean, anything could happen. And it is a gamble. Whatever, talk about trying to have it both ways. This guy gets paid to have an opinion, no? What a weasel.

Could still happen. Never put anything past the Republicans. Personally, though, now that Sanford and Palin are most likely done, I think we're looking Romney vs. Huck. Obama will crucify either one of them.

The very fact the Billy Kristol supports her proves she is incompetent, since Billy is and has always been exactly wrong about everything. The problem is that there is no negative reinforcement. All his spectacular failures keep landing him better and better jobs.

Bill Kristol keeps digging that hole deeper and deeper. At some point, if he was to cut his losses, he would expose himself as the idiot he really is. I do find it amazing how long people can go in this pundit business on their past glory (or in his case, his dad's genes). Just a total embarrassment. As it should be.

Y'all making me laugh. So now is the quitting half way through your term because you don't want to be a lame duck and waste the taxpayers money become the new Republican trick just to show the taxpayers how conservative they are? Is Billy going to talk about how shrewed Obama is if decides not to be a lame duck president and just flipping leaves office? That is just the wildest thing I have heard since Sanford last spoke.
I do try not to listen to her so I couldn't tell if she was speaking about 20 times faster then normal or not but what little bit I heard she was real borderline. Makes me wonder.
The timing also makes me really wonder about the pres prep stuff. She said they owe about half a million in legal bills. If it is not a big indictment then it is big money trouble and she needs to get that book written.

Who knows? It coud be she believes she could actually be the next Oprah. This lady has a huge ego.
Have just listened to the entire press conference for the second time. Anyone who thinks her confaluted rambling answered any questions, is as nutso as she is.
Billy, why would anyone want someone as uneducated as she is for POTUS? Glad to hear you finally admit she was a little lax in that department. Hasn't that always been the reason only the equally uneducated faction of your party is really her only staunch supporters?

I just watched (or tried to watch) Palin's speech. The thing that disturbs me the most about this freakshow of a woman is her complete and utter lack of humility or humanity. With most politicians, even when they champion the most abhorrent policies or points of view, I can usually detect something in them that is human. I used to think Michelle Bachman was like Palin. But, truth be told, I actually have a soft spot for Bachman because as much as I want her gone, deep down I can at least sense that deeply insecure teenage girl who just wants daddy's approval. And as much of a creep as Marc Sanford is, the one thing you cannot say about him is that he's lacks the quality of human emotion. Reagan, Bush, whoever. They all reveal their real selves in some weird way or another.
And yet with Palin? Nothing. Not once. Ever. The only person I can compare her to is Dick Cheney. They are complete opposites in terms of outward appearance and style. But in terms of the complete absence of any sense of humanity, they couldn't be more alike.

Actually, what struck me about the speech was how much she sounded exactly like a lot of bad small-town mayors. Someone with a big ego who thinks they're the most important person on the planet because they manage to bully the others in the town into doing what the mayor wants. But bullying is all the political skill they know, and when they rise to their level of incompetence they're shocked and hurt to find that some people don't stand for it, and while it might get you cheers from the lynch mob, it's usually not real popular in the end.
