Blue Dog Boren: We May Take Health Care Into Fall
Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK), a Blue Dog, went on Fox News today to say he wants President Obama to slow down on health care legislation, saying Congress "might miss a target deadline going into the August recess. We might take it into the fall."
"I think you're gonna see some compromise come out," Boren said. "We've gotta slow things down."
That falls in line what a Blue Dog aide told a Reuters reporter today -- that they'd ask Obama to slow down on his push for reform. The president is meeting this afternoon with Democrats from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, seven of which are Blue Dogs.
Boren has been outspoken on health care reform. "If health care reform is going to happen, it's going to have to happen in a bipartisan way," he told the Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce. "It's really up to the president."
A bipartisan bill, as Greg Sargent points out, could only exist if the White House dropped its most important goals. So, in essence, Boren is demanding Obama roll over in submission to the Republicans.

I accept that Sargent is correct.
Democrat of Oklahoma? The other Senator from Oklahoma is that insufferable religio creep Coburn, direct from the C Street Horror, who used Sotomayor's hearings to fantacize about supposed threats to 2nd Amendment rights, despite the Supreme Court's theater-of-the-absurd reading (5 to 4, naturally) of the 2nd Amendment to find rights in it never before imagined.
But I digress. That's Oklahoma. Voted for McCain by about 67% I think.
The attempt to delay this is an attempt to kill it, plain and simple.

Coburn and James Inhofe. Oklahome has two whackjob Senators.
As for Boren? Since he publicly commented a few days ago about how unpopular Obama was in Oklahoma, he should just STFU. It's obvious he simply wants to delay and thereby kill the bill.
He's about as much of a Democrat as I am a professional wrestler.

Thanks for valuable input.
What a place this Oklahoma. How could anybody willingly go to the polling booth and pull the lever for Imhofe?

No, Rep. Boren, you've got that exactly wrong. The "bipartisan way" for health care reform is no health care reform at all. You know perfectly well that the only purpose in delaying it is to begin killing it.
Whether or not health care reform with a public option makes it, and I think it will, there's an urgent need to drastically change campaign financing. Public financing of campaigns needs to be on the front burner soon.

Obama should tell Boren either he (Boren) get in line on the health reform, or he (Obama) will actively campaign for Boren in his district. Since Boren thinks Obama is radioactive in Oklahoma, this might be a threat that would work.

Boren is a Republican. He refused to endorse the party's candidate in 2008 and he wants to kill the bill in order to get a Republican elected in 2012.
LOL!

There is no way national health care should be controlled and killed by a few house representatives from red states. Who cares about Boren, tell him he does not control the White House.
And why are there so many blue dogs on the Ways and Means Committee in the first place?

Because they have seniority. Back in the bad old days of the 90s when the Republicans controlled Congress and D.C. being a Blue Dog was the only way to win as a Democrat in a lot of places. Now we're stuck with them.

Ways and Means passed the bill Friday. The holdup is Energy and Commerce aka Oil and Other Big Business that Is to say a natural fit for Blue Dogs.

Boren has no clout with the president. He refused to endorse him, openly opposed everything he did. Obama knows he's not a gettable vote and isn't going to waste a moment trying to satisfy him.
In order to have leverage, you have to pretend you're reasonable.

Boren's constituents suffer more on this issue than most - the rate of uninsured in his district is 25.8% - one of the highest in Congress -
what will Oklahomans get with all that yummy BiPartisanshit Congressman ?

I wonder how many unnecessary deaths will be caused by the moral incompetence displayed by these DINOs and Republicans over just the last ninety days. It would be useful to have a daily counter estimating how many people have been killed by health inequality, and how many lives might have been saved in a civilized country with a real health care system. These delays are literally killing people.

The only thing Oklahoma cares about is military contracts. Obama needs to play hardball with these guys.

I wish everyone of them would have a close family member lose their insurance, their savings, their home, and after that develop a terminal disease. I wish them pain and agony. Maybe then they might feel like a lot of us. I wish they could care about the people who are suffering. I wish they would support the elected President of their own party. And if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. There is no hope that they will do anything and there's no hope for the dying.
They make me sick to my stomach. They are signing my death warrant.
Representative Alan Boyd, Senator Bill Nelson, Senator Mel Martinez, please have a nice day and enjoy your summer break while 25% of the people in your state, Florida, remain uninsured.

There will be no bi-partisan health bill. Obviously we need a couple of these Blew-dogs. I will say the same thing I said before the election. Get on the Obama express or get run over - your choice.

Why should anyone in Congress slow this down. As the president said and is obvious from anyone remotely interested in politics over the last two decades, health reform was always a key issue. What the hell was Congress doing over those two decades? Many in Congress were there over this time period, yet they seem stymied by Obama's wishful timeline of "by the end of the year." You know Health reform, energy reform, immigration reform and tax reform have been on the table for the last half century, yet many in Congress seem surprised and reluctant to take up any measures. you would figure with all the lobbyist representing any number of these issues that there is ample data, ample policy research and plenty of public support for general reform. So what is holding them up? Me thinks it is all the grubby people trying to squeeze out whatever advantage they can insert into the process should it go forward. The if it doesn't you have all these inserts to give you cover for not supporting reform.
Did you guys see what Rep Buyer of Indiana tried to insert into the Commerce committee mark-up,
http://www.rollcall.com/issues/55_9/hoh/36956-1.html
I called his office to find out if they had any additional info on this proposed idea and the guy told me the may update his website later. Fucking ridiculous. If I was Dem I would get on my soapbox and scream to high heaven about this Rep Buyer proposal. Something tells me that this "surcharge" is just a clever language switch for tax. So how does adding taxes, let alone invading people's private lives, rectify with the GOP's image of no taxes, fiscal conservatism and small government?

If these guys are so stupid they can't see how their own constituents are suffering or simply don't care because they want the perks from the industry, then they should get out of the way and shut up. They are beyond dispicable in their callousness and uncaring for their fellow man. Really, Congress ought to loose their insurance benefits until they come up with plan for all Americans that is comparable to theirs. I have never seen such a group of morally bankrupt people in my life. I really hope that the progressive websites are keeping score on these guys. Regardless of Party, they need to go when election time comes up and they need to know WHY they have lost our support.

Tell Dan Boren if he wants to slow down something he can slow down his father's gay philandering, he can slow down his constant kowtowing to Republicans, he can slow down his appearances on Fox News.
Dan Boren has had government health care most of his life, first while his closeted father was governor of Oklahoma, then while he was senator from Oklahoma, and now as a "Democratic" representative from Oklahoma. Isn't it time Oklahoma turned the page on the Boren family?
If you ask me (and I'm a 4th generation Oklahoman), he's as worthless as Inhofe and Coburn. What good is a Democrat who's as fringe as those two?!

Anybody know if there's a rule that these dogs can't be replaced on the committee? You know, like for refusing to play nicely with others?
Different subject - nothing wrong with having a gay father but a lot wrong with the father and son not acknowledging it and being proud of it.

While I am not siding with the Blue Dogs on this issue, Boren is in somewhat of a precarious position and I so understand what he is doing. He represents Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District, where Obama received just 34% of the vote, making it McCain's 25th best district in the WHOLE country. There are only two Democrats in Congress in whose districts Obama performed worse than in OK-2: Chet Edwards (Central Texas) and Gene Taylor (Gulf Coast of Mississippi).
Plus, he is only in his third term, so he doesn't have as much leeway as more entrenched incumbents on issues like this. So while we may disagree with what Boren is doing, it would be politically absurd for him to risk his entire career on this issue.
What we progressives should be doing first is going after Blue Dogs opposed to a public option who represent districts that Obama won or almost won. Some people that come to mind are: Sanford Bishop (GA-2), John Barrow (GA-12), Leonard Boswell (IA-3), Dennis Moore (KS-3), Mike Michaud (ME-2), Glenn Nye (VA-2), Patrick Murphy (PA-8), and Jim Costa (CA-20).

It is morally repugnant to profit off the misery or ill health of Americans. It's criminal that medical bills to the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX make up 62% of all bankruptcies filed in the U.S. each year. Americans spend 2.5 Trillion Dollars a year on Health care. The overhead at the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX is upwards of 35% of the health care dollar spent each year in the U.S. That is approximately $900 Billion a year the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX uses for BRIBING CONGRESS and their lavish lifestyles, huge salaries plus perks and bonuses. All the while milking the hard-working men/women of this great nation of their hard earned money.
On the other hand Medicare has an overhead of 2%, Canada's system is 1.5%, Europe's 2.5% on average. The money that could be saved by eliminating the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX is estimated at $900 Billion a year. Enough money to help pay for putting all Americans on MEDICARE/SINGLE-PAYER TYPE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.
We have to fight back and call, write e-mails, letters-to-editors, Congress and to the White House to let them know how Americans feel about the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX that currently provides the health care in this country.
Here are some Senators and blue dog(dems) who are on the wrong side of Health Care reform. Give them a call and demand,
"MEDICARE/SINGLE-PAYER TYPE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL NOW!"
Thanks to Dateline_Molly for this chart that shows how much money was paid to Senators by the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX to OBSTRUCT health care reform. Link Now, when I call each member I can quote to them how much money they were PAID/BRIBED by the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX to throw their constituents under the bus and deny them SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE.
