TPMDC Morning Roundup

CBS/NYT Poll: Public Conflicted About Health Care
A new CBS/New York Times poll finds the public feeling conflicted about health care reform. On the one hand 66% of adults favor a public options, and 55% say the government should guarantee health coverage for all Americans. On the other hand, 56% are very concerned that businesses would cut jobs if government acts to cover all Americans, and a 45% plurality are very concerned that their own taxes would go up.

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will meet with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines, at 3 p.m. ET. He will meet with Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner at 4 p.m. ET, and with Vice President Biden at 4:30 p.m. Then at 6 p.m. ET, he will meet outside the Oval Office with Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley and Harvard Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr, for that round of beer that was announced last week.

NBC/WSJ Poll Also Paints Murky Picture On Health Care
A new NBC/Wall St. Journal poll finds President Obama's approval rating on health care is only 41%, with 46% disapproving. There is also conflicting information here: 50% approve of raising taxes on the wealthy in order to expand health insurance coverage, to only 44% against. But on the other hand, only 36% say Obama's current health care plan is a good idea, to 42% calling it a bad idea.

Rove: Obama Trying To Sell His Policies Through Fear
In his latest column in the Wall Street Journal column, Karl Rove accuses President Obama of "trying to sell his health-care proposals on fear." Rove warns: "This is not a healthy way to wage a policy debate. It also risks making the president look desperate at a time when his proposals are looking increasingly too expensive for Americans to accept.

Freshman House Dems Brace For Attacks During Recess
Roll Call reports that freshman House Democrats are preparing to use the August recess to explain controversial proposals such as the health care and climate change bills to constituents -- and to try to take back the debate from Republican attacks. "I think more often than we would like, the opposition has succeeded in framing the issues for us," said freshman Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA). "There's a real frustration about that. Why are we letting them do that? Why aren't we more aggressively fighting back?"

Hillary's Campaign Committee Now Debt-Free
The New York Daily News reports that Hillary Clinton's dormant presidential campaign committee is now debt-free, after having ended the 2008 primary season deeply in the red. Indeed, she is now $1 million in the black, and her Senate committee has $2.1 million in the bank, apparently raising the possibility that she could eventually run for president again at a later date.

Rudy: Birthers Hurt GOP More Than The Other Side
In an interview with CNN, Rudy Giuliani laughed off the Birthers. "We've got better things to do than that." Rudy added: "I've actually seen a birth certificate that kind of satisfies me that he was born in the United States. I don't get the issue. I don't know why they're pushing it as far as they are ... To pick false issues like that hurts us more than it hurts the other side."

It's not surprising to me that polls indicate a lot of confused thoughts regarding health care and health insurance reform - Democrats are all over the place when it comes to messaging, and haven't been terribly coherent when it comes to making sure people understand the objectives of what they're trying to do. And by they, I mean Democrats as a whole, in Congress. Granted, it's a very complicated topic, but the optics of Democrats amongst themselves trying wage a nuanced discussion of what the reform should look like against a backdrop of unified GOP Party of No heckling, well, no wonder there's confusion and second-guessing about what should be done.

Spot on. What are the OBJECTIVES of reform, other than to say that "we've reformed it"? And what is "Obama's current health care plan"? Dems have not done a good job of communicating.

And if you asked me the questions in the poll, I might have come out with the 42% & said that it was a bad idea. Because I think we ought to nationalize the whole lot, remove the burden from employers & put the insurance companies out of business.

Rove accuses the other side of fear-mongering? Really, I'm starting to wonder why anybody pays any attention to the Wall Street Journal opinion page any more.

Rove: Obama Trying To Sell His Policies Through Fear

Oh, the irony.

Indeed.

Rudy Says: "I don't get the issue. I don't know why they're pushing it as far as they are ..."

Maybe, just maybe it's because of statements like this: "I've actually seen a birth certificate that kind of satisfies me that he was born in the United States"

KIND OF? - why not just say Obama is a natural born citizen and that is a fact? What the hell is this "Kind of"? It's the equivalent of saying, "as far as I know".

user-pic

In this instance, I think "kind of" is the same as "pretty much". He says he's satisfied and goes on to claim this is a false issue.

Rudy isn't trying to undermine Obama's citizenship; he knows this is a terrible issue for the GOP.

Will Rove sue Cornyn for using his "Attack them for doing what you do"(tm) method without permission?

user-pic

There is an easy explanation for why polls are so conflicted.

Republicans are good at spreading misinformation and half truths.

The Dems enable them with their lack of pushback

The media enables them by not fact checking.

user-pic

Bingo! Only thing I would add are the words "coordinatation and" before "pushback" in the second sentence.

user-pic

Exactly! And who can blame the Republicans. They are just doing what they are supposed to do - attempt to obstruct the Democratic agenda. Shame on us, however, for being so weak in our pushback. I think that the President is doing a decent job countering their misinformation and taking the battle to them, but Congressional democratic leaders (in the Senate especially) really could not be more ineffectual. One begins to wonder how Harry Reid is even able to dress himself in the mornings, given his evident lack of initiative or power.

user-pic

I want to know what this world is coming to when you can't even say "banana-eating jungle monkey" in a non-racist way???

user-pic

The timing for legislating the "change" agenda is really bad.

Obama inherited the worst recession since WWII, along with collapses in the banking, housing and auto industries. War spending and $1.3 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy had already run up $1.2 trillion in deficits. For 8 years, we postponed basic public infrastructure spending.

Just dealing with these pressing problems is a tall order. Add to that the equally pressing need to deal with systemic problems in health care and global climate change.

Americans are tired and discouraged. But we will get through this. The recession has bottomed out. The tax cuts for the wealthy will expire after next year. It will take a generation to pay for the folly and sheer meanness of the Bush administration. But, our kids will do it.

Is it too late to forestall very serious, and permanent, disaster from global warming? Perhaps. Emerging data is alarming. We must truly work harder on this one. Again, we have left most of the load for our kids to carry.

user-pic

Not that bad but looks like the DuPonts whipped up a large large fallacy.

user-pic

I read the internals of that poll. There were about 10 questions asking "How concerned are you about...?" In the neighborhood of 50% answered 'very' or 'somewhat' to EVERY SINGLE QUESTION.

Poll fail.
