Did Reid Urge Ensign To Keep His Senate Seat?

A little more on yesterday's Las Vegas Sun report on Ensign's intent to run for re-election in 2012. This part of the story caught our eye:

When asked Monday whether he had any thoughts about stepping down, Ensign said his supporters are sending one message: "They say, 'Don't.' "

... [Ensign said] his support is coming from his fellow senators as well as those "on both sides" of Senate leadership.

Ensign said his supporters are telling him, "Keep your head up. This thing will pass."

We were curious about this alleged support from Senate leadership, so we asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) whether he's urged Ensign to keep his Senate seat.

"These are the kinds of personal decisions that Senator Ensign will have to make," said Reid's spokesman, Jim Manley.

If Reid did urge Ensign to stay, then he's far more devious than anyone gives him credit for.

"No Ensign, stay and run again. This will pass."

Personally, I doubt Reid's that smart.

Since Reid is busy with the Sotomayor hearings, maybe his spokesperson ducked the question because he doesn't know the answer. (Do senators read and answer emails from their blackberries during the really boring parts of these hearings?) Probably need to ask for clarification. On the other hand, if Reid really did send an encouraging word, I suspect the answer will never change - maybe next time the answer will be, "Slate is a metamorphic rock, you know."

I doubt that Reid would do this. My hunch is that with health care, Sotomayor, torture and etc., he's a bit too busy to have seriously considered whether he should advise Ensign to stay.

But, I do think that Ensign is in real trouble and I am glad he is staying. The story will continue.

That Republicans are known to be pathological liars is a given, I think we can take Ensign's statement for what it's worth.

How about a poll of voters to get more accurate idea of his true status?

Sounds true to me...

So, here's my take from Reno, NV. I wrote to both senators, (Reid and Ensign), demanding that the first publicly call for the second's resignation, and that the second resign.

I got zero response from Sen. Ensign. The response I got from Sen. reid has troubled me ever since.

I'll paraphrase: "Sen. Ensign and I are friends and so I'm going to withhold comment on whether he should resign because I do not want to create any more hardship for his wife and family."

When I read that I realized that those who have been in Washington for more than a few days have really and truely lost touch with the rest of the country.

And so, I'm working with like minded Nevadans to oust BOTH of these pieces of Irhoff's Law.

Irhoff's Law: Democracy is like a cesspool in that the large chunks always rise to the top."
