Former GOP Sen. Sununu Won't Seek Comeback In 2010 New Hampshire Senate Race

Former Sen. John Sununu (R-NH) has announced that he will not run for the open Senate seat of retiring GOP incumbent Judd Gregg.

Sununu lost his seat in the 2008 Democratic landslide to Democratic former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, a rematch from his previous victory over her in the Republican year of 2002. New Hampshire has very much realigned to the Democrats in a lot of ways since then, and Sununu was swept out along the way.

The presumptive Democratic nominee for the open seat in 2010 will be Rep. Paul Hodes. The Republicans do not yet have a candidate, though a lot of people were waiting on word from Sununu first. This appears to be leaning towards a Democratic pickup, but the cycle has obviously just begun.

2010 and 2012 will be exciting years. By the time Republicans are done hemorrhaging support the Democrats will likely control 2/3 of the Senate. Mmmmm...can't wait :)

Maybe then we can get something done (and done right).

Count on a Dem pickup by Robin Carnahan here in Missouri!

The most amusing thing will be to watch the media narratives at war with each other. Political geeks like us know that the Senate landscape (which seats are up, who's retiring, etc.) favor the Dems, but the media will start from their conventional wisdom that the president's party always loses seats, and it's a big deal if they don't.

This will smack up against the narrative that if Obama hasn't fixed the entire economy by then, voters will turn against the Dems (source: unnamed Republican strategists), and of course, the eternal narrative that everything is always good news for the GOP.

I can't wait.

Why would he, when the wingnut welfare is so good?

Not to mention that Sununu probably wouldn't be able to get away with the phone-jamming dirty tricks that helped him get into office the first time around.
