Full Blunt Video: "I Don't Have Any Reason Not To Believe" Obama Born In U.S. -- But Birth Certificate Is "Legitimate Question"

Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) is in a bit of a murky situation, as to whether he believes President Obama was in fact born in the United States, in the wake of comments he made the other day that seemed to back up the various objections made by the Birthers.

Greg Sargent asked Blunt's office whether he believes Obama is legitimately the president, and they instead complained that the video had been edited. Greg asked again what Blunt believes, and still did not get a straight answer.

In response, Mike Stark at Fire Dog Lake has released his full videos. In their first encounter, Blunt made a barely-audible comment that seemed to indicate to he believed Obama was born in the United States. Then Stark went back a second time:

Stark asked Blunt for confirmation that he believes Obama was born in America. "I don't have any reason not to believe that," Blunt said. When Stark asked about Birthers being "kooky," Blunt then immediately dignified them. "What I don't know is why the president can't produce a birth certificate," said Blunt. "I don't know anybody else that can't produce one. And I think that that's a legitimate question -- no health records, no birth certificate."

Stark e-mailed us a lengthy comment, available after the jump.

We first met up with Roy Blunt on Monday evening as he trekked over for the suspension votes. I asked him a simple question that could have been answered with a yes or a no. He responded to me by saying "I'm going to vote." I pressed him, and he muttered something under his breath. I thought I heard a "yes" in there, so I sought confirmation. None came; the Congressman simply kept walking away from me with his head bowed. He made his way up the steps, and we stopped filming. Within seconds, a security guard came down the steps and warned us off filming Representatives while standing on the steps. It was clear to us at the time that Blunt had complained about being accosted. In this second video, I assumed that when Blunt did not correct my understanding from the previous day - that he believed Obama was born in the United States - that he was willing to let that perception stand. What I wanted to know is if he thought the birthers were crazy. All he wanted to talk about was why Obama couldn't or wouldn't release a birth certificate. The videos attached to this post constitute every unedited second of footage we have of Congressman Blunt. We generally make our own editing decisions, but since Blunt's communications office was desperate to get the "full story" out, we are happy to help

If Obama didn't produce the certificate of live birth, who did? WTF is Blunt talking about?

Does he want Obama to sit down with him and personally show him the certificate in person? Will that do? Should Obama now spend part of his time showing republicans goofballs the certificate?

It's like Andrew Sullivan demanding, rather petulantly, I might add, that Obama PRODUCE THE CERTIFICATE, without any recognition that OBAMA ALREADY HAD.

"What I don't know is why the president can't produce a birth certificate," said Blunt. "I don't know anybody else that can't produce one."

What I don't know is why birthers can't read birth certificates. I don't know anybody else that can't read one.

Does anyone recall George Bush producing a birth certificate?

I don't have a birth certificate; the Alameda CA County Hall of Records does. I have a copy that was good enough to satisfy the U.S. government sufficiently to issue me a passport in 1989.

Of course, with the advent of optical scanners, four color printers and the like, damn near anyone could Photoshop up a bogus certificate of anything except for one small factor: the paper it's printed on. These record custodians are not a bunch of folks who just fell off the turnip truck. They're just as (rightfully so) paranoid about counterfeit documentation as the Treasury Department is about counterfeit currency. They have their methods.

I'm sure President Obama's Birth Certificate copy will pass the paper test, if it hasn't already, with flying colors.
