Gibbs: Obama Did Not Call Police Officers Stupid In Gates Case
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reports that President Obama does not regret his comments last night about the arrest of Prof. Henry Louis Gates -- and that Obama was not calling the officers stupid.
"Let me be clear," said Gibbs. "He was not calling the officer stupid, okay? He was denoting that . . . at a certain point the situation got far out of hand, and I think all sides understand that."

If you want to get all grammatical about it, the president, in fact, did NOT call the officer stupid. You see he said, "...the Cambridge Police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home..." "Stupidly" is an adverb, which is a combination of the grammatical terms of "adjective" and "verb" thus defining a word that describes a verb. Therefore, the president was calling the act of arresting someone already proven to be inside his own home "stupid" and not the officer himself for doing so.

You know, people rag on politicians all the time for not giving straight, truthful answers to questions. But let one do so- as Obama did in this instance- and immediately the concern trolls (often the very same people who the previous minute were complaining about politicians' weasel words) are all up in his face.

The Pres should have demanded the officer in question be fired and anyone else involved be reprimanded. Stupid is too kind of a description for what occurred. They're lucky Prof. Gates wasn't packing heat. I think he would have been perfectly justified in protecting himself in his own house. How did he know the intruder was a real cop?
