Liz Cheney: Birthers Are "Concerned" About President Not Defending America

Appearing last night on Larry King Live, Liz Cheney gave a defense of the Birthers:

"You know, one of the reasons I think you see people so concerned about this," Cheney explained, "I think that, you know, this issue is people are uncomfortable with having, for the first time ever, I think, a president who seems so reluctant to defend the nation overseas."

Larry King later bluntly asked, "Are you saying because he's a Kenyan?" To which she responded: "No, I'm not saying that."

In an e-mail to Ben Smith, Cheney clarified her position:

I don't have any question about Barack Obama's right to be President of the United States.

My concern is with his policies. I am deeply troubled about the path he is taking this country down -- massively expanding the size of government, weakening our national defenses, increasing taxes on all Americans and nationalizing health care. These are dangerous policies for the nation.

Note the artful phrasing that she uses. She says that she does not question Obama's "right to be President of the United States," which would logically imply that she accepts his citizenship. But she doesn't use the actual word "citizen," or otherwise include a more direct denunciation of Birther conspiracy theories.

Also, Dave Weigel appeared on the Rachel Maddow show last night, where he did a good job explaining how the Republican establishment is now in the bizarre position of condoning or even encouraging this kind of talk among its grassroots base:

I can't wait for the Republicans to nominate Jeb Bush and Liz Cheney to run against Obama in '12, and try to pass them off as change candidates.

Proper Headline:

Liz Cheney Defends Far Right-Wing Morons, Even Ones Unrelated to Her.

user-pic

Same game her father used to play. "Although I made statements which necessarily implied that Saddam was behind in 9/11, and which, indeed, would be completely incoherent in the absence of that implication, I never said that Saddam was giving behind 9/11."

Hey, Liz, let's talk about your daddy.

On May 8, 2001, he was tasked with overseeing a national effort for responding to domestic attacks. The group was supposed to draft a national terrorism response plan by October 1st. They didn't even meet once before Sept. 11th.

Bush and Cheney halted attempts to catch Osama bin Laden, yanked our troops out of Afghanistan and started an invasion of Iraq--for no good reason. As a result, 8 years later, al Qaeda and the Taliban are still going strong and Afghanistan is a huge mess now.

Please, Liz, point out to us where Obama has allowed us to be attacked and has not taken action to defend the country. Oh wait, you meant a 'verbal' attack. So, if Obama doesn't take great offense to something Ortega or Chavez or Ahmadinejad said and threaten to blow their countries to smithereens, he's weak and his citizenship should come into question. Do I have that right?

Defending the country from a foreign military or terrorist attack--not so big a deal. Defending the country from brutal verbal assaults--true patriotism. Got it.

If you actually watch the video, or read the transcript, you see that she first tells James Carville in no uncertain terms *not* to interrupt her as she speaks.

Then when it is his turn to respond, she interrupts him at every turn.

True "It's OK If You're A Republican" philosophy in action. A perfect example of the hypocrisy that the electorate rejected last November.

No, Liz, what the right wing crazies are worried about is a president who is half African and has an African first name and Hussein for a middle name. We don't have a monarch as a symbolic national parent figure so the president gets to fill in for the small minded ones. This kind of guy doesn't fit the mold so they have to latch on to anything they can to disqualify him, no matter how crazy. Once again, the best part of the nefarious Obama citizenship scheme was going back in time to the year 1961 and planting birth announcements in both Honolulu newspapers.

I loved Maddow's comment the other night, I think Monday, that some smart Democratic strategist should claim credit for starting the birthers. She's right. The birthers are a club for beating Republicans.

user-pic

Why hasn't Liz Cheney shown us her birth certificate? Until she does, we can't know with complete certainty that she is no the daughter of an alligator.

Oh wait, her dad is Dick Cheney. Never mind.

user-pic

I want to see her belly button to be sure she is human, too!

We should also check on her hearing. Evidently, when a host asks her to yield the floor she cannot hear them. No, wait, she heard Carville interrupt her, so she can hear. She's just rude and ignores the "rules" of being a guest on someone's show. Well, there's really no question of paternity. She's jus tlike her father. Now I want to see his belly button. ICK!!!!

What's more cowardly - Dick Cheney's 6 deferments or hiding behind his daughter's skirt?

user-pic
What's more cowardly - Dick Cheney's 6 deferments or hiding behind his daughter's skirt?

I forgot about the deferments. Yeah, that Dick Cheney. Quite the defender of America.

user-pic

And don't forget how he borrowed the patriotism of the soldiers sent to die for his failed policies in Iraq. Remember, if you don't agree with Cheney you don't "Support the Troops."

user-pic

Yes, the original Chickenhawk.

Why did the young Dick Cheney hate America? C'mon, Liz, tell us! His policy of non-engagement with the communists in Vietnam put America in danger!

user-pic

The reason people really are so concerned is for the first time they have a President who, when they look at him and consider his record and his demeanor and the whole package both domestic and overseas, they think to themselves, wait a minute here,

this guy's black.

That's what really gets at them. At the Liz voters to be. And jumping macacca -- she's setting up against Jim Webb for Virginia Senator in 2012. Telling her base here of a get-out-of-bigotry free they can whip out when they get called out for being the heinous racists that always have been, i.e., they're really concerned about some other malarkey. In a pig's eye!!

Some of these low-lifes will be grateful.

user-pic

Bingo! Obama's black and he talks good? MUST be a furriner.

user-pic

Dear Liz: Gidget called and wants her hair style back.

user-pic

Jerk Store. I'm goin' with Jerk Store

user-pic

Leave Liz's hair alone. Wearing a white hood for hours at a time, often around a soaring bonfire, can really mess up your 'do and produce split ends.

user-pic

That's what we're talking about here. Klansmen had euphemisms they could use in church in the same way. Public order, education level, not-racist-at-all-but concerned-about-havoc-that-can-be-created, society- just-not-ready, miscegenation risk, others-just-don't-understand, uniqueness of situation, blacks actually better off, most actually prefer it, it's-for-their-own-good-even-if-they-don't-understand,what-really-bothers-KKK-is-just-outside-interference, states rights, etc.

Same here. They talk about Hawaii and birth certificates and their national defense "worries," but Liz's real concern and their real concern is coextensive with that of their close KKK kinsmen.

user-pic

Anyone who comes out for this pseudo conspiracy is only hurting their credibility, although Cheney's was gone a long time ago so I guess it doesn't matter for her.

This is off topic, but what is up with Coulter and her obsession with her hair in this clip?

I'm sorry, I just can't look. It's Coulter. Could someone describe it to me?

user-pic

It's quite interesting... and insane... that in this nation, while we are fighting two wars, are going bankrupt, fearing terrorists, are daily having rights taken away, are now REALLY being watched by big brother, (add your own crises)... we still have our attention glued to personalities who have no relevance to any of these things.

WHO IS this woman? She has done nothing but be born with the name and lived under the care of a criminal... and has now taken up his viewpoints.

Tragedy that this nation has declined so much that we can do nothing but continue worshipping folks who have been on TV enough to be recognized...

user-pic

Let us Pray: Dear God, You giveth and you taketh away in equal measure. When the door closed on Sarah Palin, you opened a window and gaves us an even greater gift: Liz Cheney. Praise The Lord!!

user-pic

Let's get real about the "code" she's talking about here. People are fundamentally uncomfortable with a black man as President and they find it unfathomable that a black man should be the leader of the free world. He isn't "defending" America, because he's inherently a sort of "feriner" .. not a real American. They think he's not a native American, just an African Native. This birther thing feeds into their fundamental belief that blacks are not full humans, much less "real Americans".

user-pic

in keeping with your fathers 1% doctrine, i believe that there is at least a 1% chance that you have been privy to classified information that is WAY above your pay grade and WAY above your state department and DOD classification level.

you must be stopped.

rather than use your fathers doctrine of letting other people take all the risks while you take all the credit and all of the profit, i am volunteering my own time and effort to make this happen.

you sure like to run your mouth like your father. but do YOU have a SS protection detail? no?

user-pic

Obama is not a conservative Christian. Conservative Christians appear to be on the side of empire and hegemony. If your enemy tongue lashes you,"fight back," they say. I suppose this theology was something that happened with the conversion of the Roman emperor Constantine. It suits empire.

Matthew 5:44 puts a stick through the spokes of that position: "But I (Jesus) tell you to love your enemy, and pray for those who persecute you." Maybe Obama is simply being a Christian. I don't see that fighting back has been very productive. In fact, I think the world has seen (and finally we ourselves have seen) how ugly and brutal we can be.

user-pic

Why does this nepotistic porker get any air time at all?

user-pic

Somewhere between Attack Iraq, and Let's Attack Iraq Again, The Sequel, Cheney lost his mind. We should be trying to figure out when exactly that occured. Neglected to defend America, is that like not going into Bagdad because it would be a quagmire? That kind of hesitancy? That's called discretion.

If you react to every impolite expression of others, you lose your ability to decide what to do next. Others know they can reel you in like a yo-yo. Reacting is merely the abandonment of self-determination.
