Obama Demands: The Bill I Sign Must Include Public Option
While we're talking health care reform: In his weekly radio address on Saturday, President Obama did what he's refused to do all along--he said the public option isn't an option at all.
[A]ny plan I sign must include an insurance exchange: a one-stop shopping marketplace where you can compare the benefits, cost and track records of a variety of plans - including a public option to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest - and choose what's best for your family.
That's a first. In the recent past, the White House has only demanded that health care reform expand and improve coverage while lowering costs. But Blue Dogs and conservative Senate Democrats have been raising noises about the public option, while citing concerns that the reform proposals on the table won't cut costs. And with the debate reaching its crescendo, Obama's letting them know they can't have it both ways.
He has a point--introducing a robust public option would be an extremely effective way to retard the growth in health care spending. And those who are both demanding a bill that bends the spending curve downward, but also opposing any measures that would accomplish that goal, are being pretty nakedly inconsistent.

They're merely being entirely consistent with what they are- lying whores.

Hey now! What did whores ever do to deserve being compared to Republicans?

Thank you President Obama for forcefully endorsing the public option.
Now it is up to the rest of us to bring the pressure to support him. Write to your senators and congressmen - even if they are wingnut Republicans - and ask them to support the public option.
Let's get Pres. Obama's back on this one!

Seconded!
This is really good news. There were all those rumors about Rahm Emmanuel telling people that they could drop the public plan if they came up w/ another way to cut costs. It was disturbing, to say the least.
Now it's all on the table, and it's up to us to bring pressure on the Senate to include a solid public insurance option.

I'd like to help, but I just can't see how it would help to write to Cornyn, Hutchison or Rep. John Carter.
Stuck on stupid, every one of them.

I don't think it is stupidity; it is
1. Greed
2. Not wanting the Democrats to accomplish anything that people will actually be grateful for.

Yeah, mebbe. I read his comment as only mandating the insurance exchange, with an implicit "if any" with regard to a public plan.

I think the succinct but very good explanation, in the President's words quoted in the post, of the purpose of the public option, pretty much rules out your interpretation. He clearly signaled his understanding that a bill without the public option won't get the job done.

Yes, he advocated and argued for the public plan, but if he had wanted be state unequivocally that it was nonnegotiable, he would not have subordinated it to the exchange.

Thanks to Jane Hamsher at Firedog Lake, here's a way we all can be a big help to the health care reform cause. Click on the link below to send letters to editors of the various newspapers in the Blue Dog districts:

Jane has even provided factual information about each of these obstructive Congressmen which you can cut and paste into the letters. Have at it!

Thanks, IndyEllen, for that information.
Start writing and calling, people!
(although one of my calls, to Joe (All for me - CT) will probably have no effect. . .

I sympathize with you, CT. I'm dealing with Olympia and Susan up here, but I'm not giving up. Good luck.

So does this mean that TPM and their readers will stop sniping Obama for not being "progressive" or forceful enough??
DOUBT IT ...
His approval among Dems is down to 84% in latest polls.
What is the matter with progressives?? Bush W was not able to get his neo-con agenda pushed through without support and air-cover.
Dems should be supportive of the most progressive president certainly in my history. I had to grow up under Reagan and 2 Bushes! IMHO, this kind of talk from a president is AWESOME!

How can you ask? Perfection will not be achieved, ergo opposition, the more vociferous the better, is mandatory. It's okay, though, because vociferous dissent makes us stronger.

We snipe because we care. Think of them as love bullets.
July 20, 2009 11:58 AM | Reply | Permalink
Yes and no. Some of the sniping is simple contrarian bullshit that doesn't advance the conversation or educate the reader in any meaningful way. And for some, nothing Obama does will ever be quite enough.
We need that kind of opposition, certainly, but sometimes, it's just plain bullshit.

While I agree with you completely, I've come to accept that contrarian bullshit is an unfortunate (and possibly necessary?) byproduct of the semi-anonymous medium that is the Internet forum.
TPM has better comments than most places, at least. (Thinks of Yahoo news and shudders.)

If it weren't for contrarian bullshit, we'd all be more complacent than would be healthy, so I do think it's healthy and necessary.
I guess I'm still chapped over the "Obama shouldn't be in Ghana right now!!!!!!!!!" flapdoodle that erupted two weeks ago.

Yeah that was kind of funny wasn't it. For my part I was just jealous, I've always wanted to go to Ghana. It's supposed to be a beautiful country, and I have a fondness for fufu.

Of course we will, we want the best bill possible. At this point we can forget compromising with the republicans, the hurdle is within the party, and the devil is in the details. The compromise with the republicans for the stimulus bill resulted in a weakened bill that just wasn't enough and contained too many tax cuts. In particular the compromised resulted in decreased funding for states and a resulting firing of state employees (teachers etc). 2nd he backed down from facts, spending money creates more economic stimulus than tax cuts.
Personally, I want a public option available for everybody, not just uninsured.

What a lot of huffing and puffing. Dems have 60 votes in the Senate, 70% approval and an opposition party with its dick stuck in its zipper - and they still act like they're rolling a boulder up a hill. Who, exactly, are these powerful lobbyists standing in the way of reform? And where do they get their power from? EXPOSE THEM. They want to fight against what we all know is the in the public interest? Tear off their toupees of respectability and reveal them for what they are. It's good that Obama is raising the ante - let the scumbags know that the longer they delay, the more progressive the bill will become. They want to fight on the side of Evil? Make 'em show the devil's flag.

This spring, due to the demand decrease, the highest fuel price came down below $40 per barrel, though, the 'similar' insurance premiums still go on rising, which may imply that health care is not optional, but essential, and the inaction could bankrupt family, business, and government beyond this recession, as all across the board agree.
Earlier, the revised HELP BILL with the public option and employer mandatory has got a green light from the CBO, yet still, a new 'incomplete' analysis of emerging House legislation said it would increase deficits by $239 billion over a decade.
But, CBO does not score any savings from prevention / wellness and the rest, even as Prevention / Wellness is an actual and essential part of the savings, without which the reform would be meaningless.
And I think the other things such as increased productivity / consumer confidence, 'potential stem cell effect', 'decreased mental stress', and 'massive job creation', 'stock price effect' and etc considered, the reform might be within reach. Most importantly, a few years later, if the excessive war and military spending goes toward the health care program, the cost issue does not matter at all, I think.
Edward M. Kennedy argues, the perfect should not be the enemy of the good, "Everyone won't be satisfied and no one will get everything they want. But we need to come together, just as we've done in other great struggles in World War II and the Cold War, in passing the great civil-rights laws of the 1960s, and in daring to send a man to the moon. If we don't get every provision right, we can adjust and improve the program next year or in the years to come. What we can't afford is to wait another generation."
Thank You For Reading !
