Obama Reassures In The Face Of Frenetic Health Care Reform Coverage
President Obama didn't make much health care news tonight--but he did try to put the weeks developments in a greater context than the news cycle often allows.
Though silent on the firmness of the August deadline, Obama reiterated a now-familiar theme: "If you don't set deadlines in this town, things won't happen. The default position is inertia."
As an example of that, he highlighted an agreement he reached with Blue Dogs and others on the House Energy and Commerce Committee over a proposal to increase the power of an independent agency to make changes and cuts to Medicare. If it wasn't for the urgency of stated deadlines, Obama said, that might not have happened.
"If we hadn't had a deadline, that change would have likely never surfaced."
But, as the August congressional recess nears, Obama said, basically, that he has no plans to rush reform at the expense of good policy.
"I do think it's important to get this right," he said. "If at the end of the day I do not yet see that we have it right, then I'm not going to sign a bill."
As I noted below, Obama sought to reframe the debate as one where proponents of the status quo are actually making a proposal of its own--one that will result in an unsustainable growth in health care costs and blow up the federal budget. For days now, Obama has insisted that many of the conservative pols and commentators calling for the pace of reform to slow are really trying to kill Democratic legislation--and are therefore agents of that status quo.

Good summary. I would have liked to see more toughness on Congress, but I guess that's up to us.The Senate Dems are shit in my book for taking a vacation to do their fund raising in the midst of this.

Obama , the pragmatist, understands the issues. he convinced me that he is thinking clearly and will do his level best to make sure health care for average citizens improves.
His portrayal of the status quo being a downhill slide was spot on.
We cannot ignore this challenge. Obama was practical, and sensible. it makes those screaming 'socialism' sound ridiculous.
i.e he won me over, now time to make sure our legislators stay focused and quit politicking. just this once.?
one question..does this involve dental care? i hope so. dental expenses exceeded all other expenses for me the last 2 years in a row, completely robbing me of any savings or profit ...
dental care, even the standard stuff is alarmingly expensive.

Yes, manyamile, this is huge, & Obama is on the right side of history. We all have to help. He is battleing so many factions, the insurance & big pharma, the GOP is willing to do any & everything they can to defeat him, also the corporate MSM is certainly not helping, except for a small number. The public is weary, too many are starting to buy into some of the nonsense the rght are spewing. He needs everyone of us to be on the phone, writing to Congress, our newspapers, anything to part of this monumental task.
Getting it passed is crucial, as Teddy says it can be tweaked until it is better, but nothing works until then. I agree about dental. I have insurance, but the amount I payed was still staggering, the same with Laser eye surgery. It astounds, it should be so obvious, the whole country seems paranoid. If this doesn't happen we will have to accept a large part of the blame.

Cliffy, you are one sick, screwed up, pathetic excuse for a human being. Equating Obama to a Nazi and picturing him with Joseph Mengele simply confirms your status as a true right-wing sewer rat.

Thanks for that warning Yosef, as it guarantees Skippy ZERO chance of hoping for any subsequent traffic to his rather unimaginative eponymous link, crushing his hopes for increased page views to a worthless blog that no one would have wanted to waste their time on anyway.
Sorry Cliffy, not gonna find any lurking white supremacists here if you're trolling for affirmation. Actually, there's a user called whose nick starts with 'Lalo' that would be right up your back alley that posts once in a while that you could try and hunt down. I could see him making a good butt buddy of yours.
