Obama Recognizes Fourth Of July -- And Goes After His Naysayers
In this weekend's Presidential YouTube Address, President Obama paid tribute to the Independence Day Holiday, and the spirit of those who built America. Furthermore, he tied this into his own agenda on energy, health care and other issues, and against his critics who say he's doing too much:
"These naysayers have short memories," said Obama. "They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change. We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America. We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it. And on this July 4th, we need to summon that spirit once more."
McCain Stands With Iranians In GOP's Independence Day Address
In this week's Republican Address we have President Obama's rival in last year's general election, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who also paid tribute to the founding ideals of the United States. For his part, McCain took the opportunity to stand with the dissidents of Iran
"They do not ask us to arm them or come to their assistance with anything other than public declarations of solidarity, and public denunciations of the tyrants who oppress them. We have a moral obligation to do so," said McCain. "There are those among us who warn that a strong and unequivocal declaration of moral support for Iranians would be used by the cruel regime in power there to convince their subject people that the United States is behind the civil unrest they have attempted to hide from the world. But the regime will make that claim no matter what we say or do."
Obama's Independence Day Plans
President Obama arrived back in Washington from Camp David this morning. At 7 p.m. ET, he will deliver remarks from the South Lawn, at a Fourth of July celebration with military families.
Palin's Resignation Creates Whole New Questions About Presidential Run
The Washington Post reports that Sarah Palin's resignation as Governor of Alaska seems to have left a good portion of the political world feeling very puzzled. "If this is about running for president, it's about as odd a way as we've ever seen," said former McCain strategist John Weaver. But another anonymous GOP strategist said: "She has a base in the party that's motivated like no one else's, and this decision won't bother them. I don't know if she'll run. I don't know if she could win if she ran. But I'm sure she has a shot."
Biden Urges Iraqi Reconciliation; Iraq Declines Assistance
During his trip to Iraq, Vice President Biden urged the country to pursue reconciliation across its various sectarian and ethic divides, and offered whatever U.S. help may be needed. However, government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said that outside help was not desired: "We made it clear that national reconciliation is an Iraqi issue and involvement of a non-Iraqi party won't make it more successful."
Powell Cautions Obama On Big Government
In an interview with CNN's State of the Union, set to air tomorrow, former Sec. of State Colin Powell offered advice to the Obama Administration -- which he supported in the 2008 election, despite his self-identification as a Republican. "I think one of the cautions that has to be given to the president -- and I've talked to some of his people about this -- is that you can't have so many things on the table that you can't absorb it all. And we can't pay for it all," said Powell.
Environmental Groups Lose As SCOTUS Moves Rightward
The New York Times points out that environmental groups lost all five of their cases before the Supreme Court in this past term. The question is whether this represents a policy shift against environmentalists, or a more general embrace of executive power. "The real test will come when the Obama administration tries to implement new legislation, like the climate change legislation, assuming it passes," said Prof. Richard J. Lazarus of Georgetown University, who himself represented the losing side in one of these cases.

Compare and contrast Obama and McCain.
If it wasn't sparkling clear before that America made the right choice, it is now.

It's so totally true. Palin's latest antics only add to it.

I'm not about to subject myself to listening to McCain. But I am curious... did he say "We are all Iranians now"?
July 4, 2009 2:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
No, but he did say, "We are all Alaskans now."

It's funny how Obama pretends that "naysayers" tell him to stand pat, when in fact they tell him he's simply doing the wrong thing.
But, as David said earlier "we're talking amongst ourselves here...".
I'd probably replace "amongst" with "to", but the meaning is pretty much the same.
Also of note, the slow re-treat of Powell away from Obama. Does he always turn whichever way the wind blows?

I wouldn't read too much into Colin Powell's statement. He is after all a Republican who agrees with Obama when it comes to foreign policy. I might also add that Obama is still popular

Obama will always remain popular. Even when his party loses the grip on Congress, he's still going to be popular. Just like Clinton was.

The approval rate for Clinton at this time of hise presidency was 40%.

Clinton was popular when he lost Congress in 1994???? LOL. Only if you call 36% approval rating popular.

After making a complete fool of yourself last year, shouldn't you get out of the "predictions" business?

OK so the Iraqis don't want our help but surely the Iranians do

Maybe it's because Biden "urged" it?
He was the one who previously "urged" Iraq to partition itself.

Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran
John McCain..just the man you want to liberate you
Hell they even celebrate June 30th as Iraqi Independence Day
Just shows to go ya that dropping bombs on peoples' heads doesn't bring out the flowers and candy
McCain just wants to be greeted as a Liberator somewhere before he croaks
Georgia didn't want him apparently

That's his best quote, as far as I'm concerned. He "knows" that he speaks for all of us on this odd question. How many Americans could find Georgia on a map?
John "knows" he was speaking for them and for both you and me.
That's confidence!

It's pathetic. Watching John McCain struggle to maintain relevance in spite of it becoming clearer to more and more americans that he doesn't give a damn about us; for him, just like George Bush, it's only anout himself. Sarah Palin's crashing should only serve to tar him the stupid fool that he is. When he dies before january 2013, we'll know for sure what he intended to do to this country.

McCain's positive support of Palin quitting her responsibilities as governor is predictable.
For McCain to criticize her action would merely open him up to the ultimate question: then, John, why did you select her to be your VP and potential president in the event you dropped dead?
It's all about preserving legacy and he's never going to admit he f/u in choosing her. Look to him to be even Palin's "shadow agent" in her pursuit of celebrity $$$$'s.

forget whatever you hear praising palin.
no one in power in the republican party believes she is capable and i doubt if many people trust her.
the problem is they must all walk a fine line because they dont want to alienate her supporters.
you know the hard core racist skinhead types.
she actually does believe she can become president.
as offensive as she is i find the media even more offensive for not exposing her .
do we really want to respect people that believe science is not valid?
or cant answer simple questions?
palin represents a thinking that embraces ignorance and hate.
she is very skilled at manipulating the people who believe in that. shes been doing it her whole lifefor personal gain.
but, the more she is in front of the public the more exposed she becomes.
she is a liability politically to the republicans and my guess is we can expect many more revalations coming from "insider' leaks aimed at undermining her.

CBS News has a particular story on Palin with this jewel:
The Witch of Wasilla is planning to attack the First Amendment both free speech and press. Too bad everyone has their heads stuck in the sand over Jackson's suicide.

The first amendment is not absolute. Not that it really applies in this situation, but for expediency, do not pretend that the concepts of libel and slander do not exist.

I think McCain is the strawman here in this response to political announcements on the 4th of July. I, for one, find it to be particularly reprehensible instead for Obama to adopt the cloak of the patriots in his remarks.
The Declaration of Independence was a declaration against the tyranny of the government of King George. Nowhere did it mention health care reform (or, as is more cynically accurate, health insurance "reform"). Nowhere did it mention an energy policy. Nowhere was it presented as an outline for a business-as-usual political policy agenda.
No, the Declaration of Independence was fighting words! I would encourage all to read the Declaration of Independence within the context of what should be our proper response to the many abuses of power introduced by the Bush Administration and now sanctioned by the Obama Administration. The Declaration of Independence leaves little doubt about just how urgently Jefferson and Adams and the others would have responded to revelations about war crimes and Gitmo and CIA "Black Sites" and warrantless wiretaps and the suspension of habeus corpus rights and the murder of detainees and other such extreme human rights abuses.
McCain is a clown, and his ridiculous, denture-clattering pronouncements are to be expected.
Obama is another story. He is our President. Furthermore, he was elected in main part to restore the principles of governance spelled out so beautifully in our Declaration of Independence. He has failed miserably in this regard.
If he would now choose just a modicum of honor before political expediency, he would find the decency to at least lay low and not show his face around here during our celebration of the 4th of July. But who needs honor when there are so many lobbyists requiring servicing for a fee, eh? Obama chooses instead to continue with the very lucrative "business" of governing instead of defending our Constitution, and thus blasphemes our Founders in the process. We should all feel ashamed for allowing it to happen.

Well hang on for a few more years and you can vote 3rd party or Republican and get rid of the "the evil one". It's funny, our side (liberals) will bitch about our President until there's a Republican majority and then wonder how Republicans got back in power.

Bite me, Colin Powell. I don't recall you saying "we can't pay for it all" about George's wars and tax cuts, which had a larger price tag than all of Obama's initiatives, not to mention that most of the money went for destruction and lining the pockets of the rich, producing no benefit for the country.
I guess that proves you really are a Republican -- you're "fiscally conservative" -- but of course military spending and tax cuts don't count.
