TPMDC Saturday Roundup
Obama Takes On Health Care Detractors
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama said that the current health care proposals would help small businesses that are currently being crushed by the rising costs of health insurance. And he went beyond that, taking on his critics as being politically motivated:
"Some have even suggested that, regardless of its merits, health care reform should be stopped as a way to inflict political damage on my Administration.," said Obama, an apparent reference to Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). "I'll leave it to them to explain that to the American people. What I'm concerned about is the damage that's being done right now to the health of our families, the success of our businesses, and the long-term fiscal stability of our government."
GOP Address: Dem Plan Will Force People Off Their Current Health Coverage
In this week's Republican YouTube, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) attacked the Democrats' health care proposals, using the recent Congressional Budget Office reports as a main weapon:
"According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the Democrats' proposal will drive health care costs higher than ever," said McMorris Rodgers. "The agency also warns that millions will be forced off their current coverage under the Democrats' plan, even though they continue making the discredited claim that if you like your plan, you can keep it."
No Obama Or Biden Events
President Obama is spending the weekend in Washington, D.C., Vice President Biden is in Wilmington, Delaware. They do not have any scheduled public events.
Palin: "I Will Take The Battle Nationally"
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) told the Washington Post, ahead of her resignation from office tomorrow, that she will stay in the political arena: "I will take the battle nationally and I won't shy away from challenging the powerful, the entrenched, the corrupt and anyone standing in the way of getting our country back on the right track."
Steele: Dem Plans Will Make Schiavo Case "Look Like A Walk In The Park"
RNC chairman made an interesting comment yesterday about the Democratic health care proposals, warning against socialist control of people's medical decisions: "It'll make the Terri Schiavo case look like a walk in the park." The peculiar thing here is that he's using the Schiavo case as an example of a bad thing, when in fact Republicans pushed for government intervention and many liberals opposed it in that case.
WaPo: Hospital Lobbyists Try To Minimize Damage
The Washington Post reports that the hospital industry has stepped up its lobbying efforts in the health care debate, especially in opposition to the public option and to an independent agency to set Medicare rates. "We are very much interested at being at the table and are very pleased that we have been included," said Richard Umbdenstock, head of the American Hospital Association. "But there are certain issues that are very serious and grave concerns for us."
Corzine Picks Reformist Dem For Lieutenant Governor
Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) has selected state Sen. Loretta Weinberg to be his running mate in this year's election. Weinberg is a progressive who has a history of championing political reform and taking on the party machinery -- which could be a plus in light of the recent federal raid against politicians of both parties, which included a member of Corzine's administration who has now resigned.
Gates Accepts Invitation To Have Beer With Obama And Policeman
Prof. Henry Louis Gates has accepted President Obama's invitation to come to the White House to have a beer with Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley, the officer who arrested him. "If my experience leads to the lessening of the occurrence of racial profiling, then I would find that enormously gratifying," said Gates. "Because, in the end, this is not about me at all; it is about the creation of a society in which 'equal justice before law' is a lived reality."

Just what "battle" is Palin taking nationally?
A former governor mired in ethics complaints is talking about battling corruption?
I look forward to her weighing in on the birther insanity.

I doubt it matters to her what the battle is about, she just wants to jump in and start throwing punches.

I believe you mean she wants to jump in and whine that punches are being thrown.

I think her motives are more pure than that.
She just wants to see herself on TV and in news stories in magazines and newspapers, etc.
She IS photogenic; but Marilyn Monroe was much more so. I wouldn't want Marilyn for president either.

Silly, kitty. The Battle against Objective Reality, of course. Same one Rep.Rodgers is so nobly fighting.

Fighting until everyone knows that objective reality is really the secret love-child of Walter Cronkite and the New York Times...those damned liberals.

Who is Palin battling, the voices in her head? If she is going to challenge the corrupt she needs to look in the mirror. What's her weapon of choice for her battle, stupidity?

I'm guessing you just read the sensationalistic headline and frantically ran over here to pretend that the CBO was reinforcing the paranoid blabbering that's coming from right-wingers like DeMint. What's hilarious is to see conservatives like yourself celebrating criticism of an idea that involves enabling an independent panel to cut government-financed health care benefits.
It just goes to show that the right is not interested in having an honest debate. There is certainly an interesting policy discussion to have about the efficacy (both short-term and long-term) of various proposals, but it's occurring among Democrats and independents... and it's focused on finding ways to improve the reform bill. The GOP and its industry financiers are just shrieking like howler monkeys... and when they're not being flatly dishonest, they're demonstrating their profound ignorance of serious policy issues.

Which is to say... if Republicans are interested in preventing cuts to long-term Medicare spending, I won't stop them. :)

Oh no! A conservative blog has exaggerated the significance of a CBO finding about a single proposal that few people outside the wonk community even knew about!
You're right, Lalo, this truly vindicates DeMint's desire to jettison reform altogether for political gain.

OK, Lalo, I'm asking you again. What is your solution? I'm assuming you have a solution, and that your entire schtick isn't just griping and complaining and pulling out things that you consider to be inconsistencies.
I'm asking you yet again -- what is your solution? I have yet to get a response, BTW.

I don't know about Lalo; but my solution is HR 676, Single Payer.

Mine too. Lalo never answers the question. He'll follow a thread until it is one letter wide if it is only tit for tat, but once the question of how he would do it comes up, he departs. That is his MO.

You've yet to get a response from... Lalo?
Gee Jan ... I bet you're not surprised.
That's because Lalo is too busy wandering through the threads dropping such gems as this one about some scheme to . . .
In addition to Lalo helping to spread the spin from the Frank Luntz GOP memo ... Found here in my May 6, 2009 Cafe blog:

Actually, we have a little conversation going over on his blog. His solution is regulation of insurance companies and making them nation-wide instead of state by state. Considering the level of influence of the insurance industry (therefore most likely making them in charge of writing the regulations), I don't see regulation as the answer. How about you, OGD?

House Bill 676 and Senate Bill 703 . . . PERIOD!
I outline our personal situation and the current fight with the for-profit weasels at Moyer's site here. . .
Our situation with our not-for-profit health care and services organization we have been with for the past 27 years won't change one iota under the new regulations. Our plan already meets the current mark-up to be included in the Exchange. If anything changes at all under the current legislation I hope that it's more affordable. But I seriously doubt that. It also already meets the regulations and requirements of H.R.676 and S.703.
Within the fight over this current legislation, I firmly believe that a public-option must be part and parcel within the proposed Exchange system. And the reason is not so much for the "competition" it would purportedly provide, but more so for the people and families who currently have no option whatsoever other than Medicaid or the use of emergency facilities.
How's that Jan? Does that answer your question?
