Obama's Political Arm Bringing Pressure To Bear On Health Reform
The messages coming out of the Obama White House may be mixed, but Obama's political machine is keeping on point. Organizing for America is calling on supporters to phone their elected representatives on the Hill and urge them to support Obama's health care principles, which, they say, include:
- Reduce costs
- Guarantee a choice of plans and doctors -- including the choice of a robust public insurance option
- Ensure quality, affordable care for every American
You can read the entire letter here. Obama himself has been a supporter of a public plan all along, but has been unwilling to demand that Congress include one in its final reform package. But he'll be more likely to get what he wants--and find it easier to sway luke-warm members--if his supporters are engaged on the issue.

Organizing for America's campaign has no way to support a public option. You can support the President's "principles" but doing so does not send the NEEDED signal that you support public option. If you want to support public option, tell Organizing for America (if you can figure out how to contact them on this issue) but more importantly FAX (thank you TPM posters)--yes FAX--members of Congress and the President. Not just your representatives but also those on the Finance Committee and the other committees working on this issue. See CarlBentham's post "Update: List of Dem Senators Who Don't Support the Public Option" as well as Jane Hamsher's initiative to pressure Congress (firedoglake.com). Please, don't be mislead into thinking that supporting Organizing for America's campaign means that you've registered support for public option.
