TPMDC Morning Roundup
Poll: Most Americans Wouldn't Vote For Palin
A new Gallup poll finds that 54% of Americans say it is not too likely or not at all likely that they would vote for Sarah Palin if she ran for President in 2012, compared to 43% who say it is somewhat likely or very likely that they would support her. In addition, 70% say her resignation as Governor of Alaska has had no effect on their view of her, with 17% saying they now view her less favorably, and 9% more favorably.
Obama's Day In Italy
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Rome, Italy, at about 4:20 a.m. ET (10:20 a.m. local time). At 5:10 a.m. ET, Obama met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, and the two delivered brief statements to the press. At 6:45 a.m. ET, Obama arrived at the Guardia di Finanz School, greeted by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. There was a G-8 working lunch at 7 a.m. ET, and Obama will attend a G-8 session on global issues at 9:30 a.m. ET. At 11:45 a.m. ET, Obama and Berlusconi will tour L'Aquila historic center, and Obama will attend a G-8 working dinner at 2 p.m. ET.
Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will make a major announcement on health care at 10:30 a.m. ET, joined by Sec. of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), and representatives of the hospital industry. They are expected to announce a deal, on health care, with the hospital industry offering up $155 billion in savings to finance health care reform. He will spend the remainder of the day in private meetings.
Nuke Treaty Gives GOP Opportunity On Missile Defense
The Hill reports that Senate Republicans have a rare opportunity exercise leverage on President Obama's new agreements on arms reduction with Russia, which will require a two-thirds majority in the Senate in order to be ratified. Republicans are likely to apply pressure on missile defense, as explained by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC): "I don't want the Russians to get something and we get nothing. I don't know what we're getting out of this."
Senate GOP Preparing To Question Sotomayor On Bias
Republicans are gearing up for the Sotomayor hearings next week, with a plan to ask her pointed questions about whether she favors certain groups over others. "I think the Sotomayor strategy is pretty obvious," said an unnamed GOP leadership aide. "Respectfully asking questions but very pointedly asking about the appearance of favoritism. Americans don't like the idea that a judge might play favorites."
Conservative Gun Activists Come Out Against Sotomayor
A group of 26 leaders of conservative gun-rights organizations have sent a letter to Senators, telling them to not confirm Sonia Sotomayor. "Judge Sotomayor has already revealed her views on these issues and we believe they are contrary to the intent and purposes of the Second Amendment and Bill of Rights," said the letter.
CQ: Specter Has Become A Loyal Democrat Since Switch
CQ reports that in the time since Sen. Arlen Specter (PA) switched form the Republicans to the Democrats, he has become a loyal Dem -- with a higher level of party unity in his votes than he'd displayed as a Republican. On the 20 votes that have pitted a majority of Dems against a majority of GOPers, Specter has voted with his new party 17 times, compared to his prior score in 2009 of only 56% loyalty to the Republican position.

Specter is a loyal Democrat thanks to Joe Sestak. If he were to win reelection, he'd be the same pain in the ass he's always been. PA is blue enough to send a real Democrat to the senate.

"43% who say it is somewhat likely or very likely that they would support her."
How can that even be possible? How can a little over 4 outta 10 Americans consider voting for her? This statistic blows my mind.

My guess? Faux Fox is making her moves look like something heroic, or at least reasonable. The few Fox talking heads questioning her moves will surely be out-shouted by Sarah's fan club, meaning all the rest of the Fox voices. Always their mantra is "us against them," and Sarah is their "us."

The real question is (because these are obviously Republicans) who would you vote for: Romney, Huckabee or Palin? Most Republicans I know find Palin to be an embarrassment and an utter disgrace.

This morning on Morning Joe our "middle America" pundits (the ones from Pensacola Beach, and the ivory towers of New York and Boston) were touting the Quinnipiac poll of Ohioans for the proposition that Obama's popularity is tanking and a Washington Post poll for the proposition that more than half of America likes Sarah Palin.
As a tried and true West Virginian, I don't believe Ohioans are a barometer for anything. We West Virginians believe that the Ohio drivers education courses teach them to drive in the left lane of the interestate. We don't like their jokes eeither.
I expect the Washington Post poll callers did not make it past K Street.
This morning, my AOL greeting web page is disclosing the cost of Michelle Obama's staff. Now I am glad that this kind of information is being ferreted out now, but I sure as hell don't remember AOL or anyone else telling us this kind of stuff during the W years about Laura's staff.
Most people I talk to think the Obama administration is doing as well as expected given the challanges. Sure we don't like the fact the a lot of money is being spent, and nobody likes everything the Obama adminstration does, but we got holes to dig out of.
Is anybody else smelling a Main Stream Media effort to denigrate/criticize most everything the Obama Administration is doing??

I made the mistake of watching Morning Joke today. My gosh, by listening to them, you'd swear healthcare had one foot in the grave. Joe kept saying how McCaskill and Bayh and Pryor and Lincol and Landrieu were not going to vote for healthcare. With the exception of Landrieu, I have no idea where he's getting this from.
Every morning they talk about how "Americans are starting to really, really get worried about" X the administration is doing. It's wishful thinking on Joe's part.
They are praying this administration collapses and blow any negative thing out of proportion.

A very large yes here. If over half of this country would actually vote for an uneducated, self obsessed, tabloid type like Palin, this country is in far worse shape even than we thought. A similar analogy migtht be Fox nearly always winning the ratings game, but the polls almost always favor less republican leaning outlets.

Bigger Question: Who are the 9% who think MORE favorably of Palin since she relinquished her responsibilities to the people of Alaska?

That would be her "base".

How about the Russians having fewer nukes which leads to fewer chances for terrorists to steal nuclear material? How about improved relations with Russia which may mean we can actually apply some pressure to Iran?

One step closer to a nuke-free world.
The intent of the Second Amendment was to protect citizens who served in authorized militias being necessary for the defence of a free state from prosecution on charges of being armed. In my opinion, once the United States established a standing army, this amendment should have been repealed. But now, it's too late. Politicians have been emasculated by the pro-gun lobbies.
And as a general question, why is it, when there is some horrific shooting incident, among the expressions of sympathy and outrage, the NRA etc., are strangely silent?

They're not silent. They start talking about how this wouldn't have happened if everyone was packing.
That's the solution to shootings in schools and churches. If only the teachers & preachers were armed...

Hope everyone reads this column by Brooks on dignity. He hits the nail on Palin, Sanford, and a SPECIAL guest appearance at the end of the article. Won't ruin it for you. Thousands of people have responded to this column from yesterday's NYT:

" 54% of Americans say it is not too likely or not at all likely that they would vote for Sarah Palin... 43% who say it is somewhat likely or very likely that they would support her."
For those of you falling into that 43% scenario, just ponder this: NORAD is on alert... we are at the edge of nuclear war with China...
and Sarah decides it is just too stressful... and quits.
If nothing else, just the thought of someone not having guts enough to push the button and destroy the world should make you think seriously about what kind of Republican Sarah really is

Thank you for the link. It is refreshing to hear something besides spin about Palin. So many are propping her up with hidden genius, sly like a fox type rhetoric. There have been several people with credability like Mark Mc kinnon, Gene Robinson,& Richard Wolfe talking much like David Brooks. I repeat, refreshing.

HOW THE HELL CAN ONLY 54% OF AMERICANS BE FAIRLY SURE THEY WOULDN'T VOTE FOR PALIN???!
We ARE screwed as a country..
