TPMDC Morning Roundup

Poll: Palin's National Favorability Drops As She Leaves Office
A new ABC/Washington Post poll finds that Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-AK) national favorability numbers are in bad territory as she prepares to resign her office. Only 40% of Americans view her favorably, with 53% viewing her unfavorably, down from a 46%-51% number from two weeks before Election Day 2008. In addition, only 37% say she understands complex issues, to 57% who say she does not.

He will speak at the Department of Education at 1:15 p.m. ET. At 5:30 p.m. ET, he will sign a proclamation celebrating the 19th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Baucus: Removing Health Care Deadline Should Help Process
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) said yesterday that the delay of a vote on health care reform should help the process. "I think it's helping a little because this is so complicated and Senators want to feel comfortable with what they're doing," Baucus told reporters.

Obama To Use Stimulus Money To Push For Changes In Education
During his remarks today at the Department of Education, President Obama will officially announce the "Race to the Top" initiative, under which states can compete for grants from a pool of $4.35 billion in stimulus money. Schools will be encouraged to ease limits on charter schools, and to tie teacher pay to student achievement.

National Dems' Pick Won't Run In Special Election
New York state Sen. Darrel Aubertine, who had been courted by the national Democrats to run for the upcoming NY-23 special election, has announced that he will not run. Republicans have already picked state Rep. Dede Scozzafava, a social liberal who favors gay marriage and abortion rights, to be their candidate to replace Rep. John McHugh (R), who has been nominated by President Obama to be Secretary of the Army.

Boehner: Republicans "Putting Final Touches" On Their Health Care Plan
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said yesterday that the House Republicans will have an alternative health care plan, but did not say when it would be ready. Boehner explained that Republicans will "make decisions at the appropriate time for how we'll proceed," and that they are "putting the final touches" on their bill.

Inhofe: Stalling Health Care Will Be "Huge Gain" For GOP In 2010
Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) declared on the Hugh Hewitt radio show that Republicans can block President Obama on health care -- and that it will be a political plus to do so. "We can stall it," said Inhofe. "And that's going to be a huge gain for those of us who want to turn this thing over in the 2010 election."

Yglesias called out Inhof's comments yesterday and pointed out that if the Blue Dogs manage to derail health reform, it will actually hurt them.

Clinton's defeat in 1993 led the way for a GOP takeover of the House. So who would lose the most? Dems in vulnerable and conservative districts.

Ironically, if they are loyal and unified, and Obama succeeds, the public will perceive them all as "succeeding" and they will win.

Cowering and pandering to so-called conservative districts is idiotics, after all, if they are so goddamn conservative, why not just elect the real thing?

Exactly right. In electoral sweep years -- like 1994 for the Repugnuts and 2006 and 2008 for the Democrats -- it's the other party's moderates who are the first to go as their districts' and states' natural majorities return home.

This is one thing Senator Inane Jerkoff is right about. Every single Blue Dog in the House, and every spineless DINO in the Senate, from Max Baucus to Ben Nelson, needs to hear this message loudly and clearly. If they sink health care reform, they're not only screwing over the American people -- they're also sinking their own political fortunes.

Like always the blue (lap) dogs democrats fail to see the political consequences of their cowardly and obstructionists actions

Boehner explained that Republicans [...] are "putting the final touches" on their bill.
He does realize that a bill requires actual words constructed into sentences, and not just a colorful chart... right?

He means the glossy covers have not arrived from Kinko's yet.

This edu money has come up a few times today.
Anyone wonder why the gov can spend 1,000,000,000,000.00 to pay bad banks and bad insurance companies who only have the peoples' money to begin with and let 50 states fight over 4-5 billion for edu? Just wondering.
Take note: next time you drive into anytown usa check who owns the biggest buildings. That's correct, banks and insurance. Now what companies use none of their own money? Same. Is this something we should look at?
Now take a look at the public school buildings. How do they compare?
Are the priorities a little off??
Looks like the last 8 years of media saying smart and educated is a sin has taken it's toll.
Don't get distracted. At least don't stay distracted.

40% favorable! That's astonshingly high given Palin's aptitude level. I suppose I do approve of her stepping down from office - assuming she just fishes from now on.

I find the WaPo poll very encouraging. The American public can see through B.S.

I'd be embarassed to learn that the majority doesn't think I understand complex issues. But Palin will probably wear it as a badge of honor.
