Sanford Riding Out The Storm, Seeks To Regain Trust
It's looking more and more like Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) will be able to ride out this whole scandal, now that media coverage has moved on to other topics like Sarah Palin and Michael Jackson, and serve out the remaining year and a half of his term without having to resign.
Yesterday evening, the South Carolina Republican Party's executive committee voted to censure Sanford for his moral transgressions -- defeating those on the committee who had wanted to call for his resignation.
Sanford's communications director Joel Sawyer put out a brief statement today, responding to the party's censure: "The governor fully appreciates the party's position, and he intends to work diligently to earn back its trust."
Glenn McCall, a non-voting committee member, told the New York Times how his position against Sanford was beaten by the others: "the argument that I made that the governor has lost credibility to lead and moral authority and will impact the party in 2010, and the other side that felt that he's done great things for the state, made a mistake and should be reprimanded."
So on the one side we have a party that has settled on a moral reprimand, and a governor who has accepted the reprimand and pledged himself to earning back their trust. Unless some other shoe drops (and how many could possibly be left?), then this is probably over.

...so the fate of the governor rests solely with the SC Republican party? Doesn't he have to answer to more than just them? I'm cornfused...

Why would he resign? He was in love, unlike Clinton who was just out for adulterous affairs.

What about the other times when he "crossed the lines" with other women.
You are a troll and an idiot.

Wow - that means it's okay to cheat if your "in love", even though you are married and have 4 children?? You do know that adultery is still against the law in South Carolina!

Clinton has nothing to do with this. That is a separate item over ten years old. Okay bring up Clinton then explain Eisenhower.
The man has been an awful Governor not getting anything dome. Last election cycle he worked with New York nut case financier Howard Rich to unseat conservative incumbent state Senators to try and make a point.
The result we lost a couple of state Senators and he made a powerful enemy of Jake Knotts who beat the Sanford/Rich candidate. No one wants him
anymore.

I think it would be in the best interest of the Republican Party for Sanford to resign.
Even if Sanford does stay in office, I think that at this point his career is pretty much shot. Not because of the affair, spending of state money, and public scandal--but because his whole platform was built against this very sort of thing.
Brand expert John Tantillo also did a post on his marketing blog, naming Sanford the week's brand loser, pointing out that in personal political brands (rather than celebrity brands, such as MJ), there is less room for error..
He has has done a few posts on Fox Forum about branding issues of both parties. Worth checking out.

Sanford got lucky. The Michael Jackson circus took the spotlight away and he escaped the hatchet. It doesn't matter, he's done.
