Sarah Palin Resigning Governorship Today
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) will officially resign today, at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks. The big question now: What's next for her in politics? "I cannot express enough there is no plan after July 26. There is absolutely no plan," she told the Associated Press. "The decision (to quit) was made in the vacuum of what was best for Alaska, and now I'm accepting all the options, but there is nothing planned."

Axelrod: Obama Saw Gates Discussion "Veering Off In The Wrong Direction"
Appearing on Face The Nation, White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod explained President Obama's decision Friday to clarify his comments on the Henry Louis Gates arrest. "I think he understood that the debate was veering off in the wrong direction and as he said, that his words may have contributed to that," said Axelrod, "so he felt a responsibility to step forward and kind of cool the situation down and acknowledge the fact that he had, as he said, calibrated his words poorly and had contributed to that. So that is what he did and I think it has had the desired effect."

Biden: The Recovery Act Has Been Critical To Progress
In an op-ed piece in the New York Times, Vice President Biden puts forward the case that the stimulus bill has been successful. "The actions we took -- passing the Recovery Act, stabilizing the banking system, pressing to get credit flowing again and helping responsible homeowners -- brought us back from the precipice," Biden writes. "Monthly job losses are down, financial markets are improved, and economic contraction has slowed. We still have a long way to go, but clearly we are closer to recovery today than we were in January. The Recovery Act has been critical to that progress."

Conrad: Democrats-Only Health Care Bill Not Possible -- And Perhaps Not Desirable
Appearing on This Week, Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) said of health care reform: "There are not the votes for Democrats to do this just on our side of the aisle." George Stephanopoulos asked again whether it's not possible to have a Democrats-only bill. "No, it is not possible, and perhaps not desirable either," said Conrad. "We're probably going to get a better product if we go through the tough business of debate, consideration, and analysis of what we're proposing."

DeMint: "Waterloo" Comments "Not Personal"
Also on This Week, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) defended his comments that Republicans can make health care into President Obama's "Waterloo," and can "break" him. "This is not personal against the president. I like the president," said DeMint. "But he's out of control and he's been leading a stampede of more spending, and debt, and taxes and government takeovers."

Gibbs: Obama Will Monitor Pre-Recess Progress On Health Care
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that President Obama will monitor the continued discussion on health care this week, and that Obama established his August deadline in order to prod Congress. "Without poking and prodding not a lot gets done," said Gibbs. He added that if enough gets done by Friday, "having lawmakers go home for their regularly scheduled August recess is probably a good thing."

Pelosi: Private Insurance Industry Has Had Long Enough
Appearing on State of the Union, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stood by her support for a public option, and also opposed the imposition of a "trigger" mechanism that would delay the public plan. "I think the private insurance industry has had a long enough time to have a trigger," said Pelosi. "We know what happens left to their own devices."

Hillary To Iran: Your Pursuit Of Nukes "Is Futile"
Appearing on Meet The Press, Sec. of State Hillary Clinton declared her full opposition to a nuclear Iran. "We are going to do everything we can to prevent you (Iran) from getting a nuclear weapon," said Clinton. Your pursuit is futile." On the subject of Israel, she said: "The United States stands with you and the United States believes that Israel has a right to security. We believe, however, that this (diplomatic) approach we are taking, holds out the promise of realizing our common objective."

Just listening to turkey man on cnn. I really wish that these buffoons in the media would pound him with the facts. I am so sick of let the "market" handle healthcare. It can't. You don't have "market" forces involved. You can't have a market for a fire department or the police, so why on earth would a rational person, when faced with the facts, think that the "market" has any impact on healthcare. It makes no sense.

For once I agree 100% with krugman and this blog:

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/25/why-markets-cant-cure-healthcare/

Simple, logical, and to the point. Why is this so difficult of a concept for the wingers in the propoganda arm of the repuke party, the media, to get this. I really don't understand.

user-pic

Krugman nailed it. I honestly have no clue as to why the media especially seem incapable or unwilling to understand how we have a broken system, it's unsustainable, and we have no real competition. Some Blue or GOP will claim it's "too expensive" and yet don't want a public option or price controls, the only means to reduce cost. Yet I never hear Stephanopolis or Blitzer or any of them say "we'll which is it -- do you want to reduce the cost or don't you? And if we don't reform health care now, how will you pay for the soaring costs that will result from inaction??"

The MSM is in bed with the GOP and the industry, and only present their views. You'd think that these mostly rich reporters could find a moment to ask ANY of the 50 million uninsured about their plight. But instead, all we hear are the views of the GOP and industry.

user-pic

They'll wait until the bill fails and then do a 3 part expose on the health industry and then blame Obama for not passing health care reform.

user-pic

And part of the reason why costs are soooo out of whack is because of the emergency room problem with the uninsured. They don't go to a doctor, because they can't afford to, and then they show up in an emergency room with the situation critical and the costs of emergency room care is ridiculous vs. just going to the doctor when it's not critical. Then those costs are passed on to the people with insurance or who can afford to pay. Everything is completely out of whack and needs from top to bottom reform and get the criminal insurance industry out of the mix. They provide no service at all and just try to prevent people from being insured.

Also, I just love the line that the market is wonderful. If you have a pre-existing condition, you are screwed and the insurance company tries to get rid of you. Sure there its easy to get insurance if you are young and healthy. Make a claim and look out, no insurance, because you are not profitable. What a bunch of crooks. And all this bs just makes me want to hurl.

user-pic

Loved the debate on This Week. Conrad vs. DeMint on who opposes reform more. The best Sunday show the pharmaceutical companies can buy.

user-pic

I know. when I saw this lineup, I thought, "Can't they find any, you know, SUPPORTERS of health care reform to debate its kneejerk opponents?"

user-pic

If Conrad wanted healthcare reform he wouldn't claim it's impossible to do it without republicans. He knows no republicans will go along so he thinks he has a great excuse for when it doesn't pass. He forgets that we can count.

Conrad just doesn't get it does he? Or maybe he does. The Republicans are out to kill health care reform.

Maybe he does get it

""I cannot express enough there is no plan after July 26. There is absolutely no plan," [Palin] told the Associated Press.

You have to hand it to her... a lot of politicians wouldn't be mavericky enough to admit that!

That's the hilarious thing about Palin. She says something that makes her look about as flighty and irresponsible as it's possible for someone to be... and yet I still don't believe her.

user-pic

Really? I think that's just about the first believable thing I've heard her say. If she said she had a plan, would you believe her? I sure wouldn't.

user-pic

What is wrong with the Democrats? Conrad could not be a worse spokesman for health care reform, unless you consider Bachus. Why do they put these people on Sunday morning shows, unless, they really want Obama to fail and no health care reform at all. It's beginning to look like '93 all over again.

user-pic

This is the real problem. We're stuck with Conrad and Baucus as chairmen, but there's no reason they should be out in public. The Dems should be having Congressional advocates of actual reform out on the talk shows, in order to pressure them to shape the legislation.

user-pic

Unfortunately, I don't think the party gets to choose who goes on these programs. The media outlets themselves too (and often make promises to these hacks to get them on: recall David Gregory promising Governor Appalachian Trail a friendly forum where he could put his own spin on the facts without any, you know, journalism interfering with the spin).

user-pic

I actually thought that Conrad had a good point: He basically said we are NOT going to see savings unless we change the DELIVERY system of health care to one closer to the Mayo Clinic model.

That is precisely the point that A LOT of people are making in that there won't be true "reform" unless you change the same damn system to one of treating the sick with a "fee for service" model to one of prevention and healing with a "fee for results" model.

I don't have a problem with that.

user-pic

Another lie from the right-wing media and the repukes and "blue dogs."

Senate Democrats alone cannot pass President Barack Obama's ambitious overhaul of how Americans receive health care, a top lawmaker acknowledged on Sunday. Republicans said they will continue their opposition to a plan they say is simply a government takeover of private decisions.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090726/ap_on_go_co/us_health_care_overhaul

PRIVATE DECISIONS????? What planet are these people on? You have no rights and no right to make a "private decision" with the criminal insurance industry. They make the decisions for profits, you don't. I really don't get why this bull gets any traction. It's like none of these people ever had to deal with a carrier. They should do exposes on people with major medical problems and see how many "private decisions" they get to make. None. Then if it's a big problem, they will take you to court. It's really aweful. This is just garbage.

user-pic

Meanwhile i flipped on Fox for a sec during a commercial break and there they are doing scare tactics, Universal Nightmare stories.

user-pic

Give it a week, two weeks max, and you will get to listen to/watch ex-Governor Palin pontificate about everything she knows nothing about on Fox or CNN. That is, if she can fit it in between $100,000 per speech engagements speaking about those same subjects. The only reason she "has no plan" is because her agent hasn't signed her up for the top dollar appearances yet. But, enough comedy:

On health care: It takes 50 votes by senators to pass a health care bill, when that bill is to partially enact the already passed budget. Sen. Conrad knows that too, but if the insurance industry-owned senators repeat it enough, soon everyone will believe that 60 votes are needed. But, the president still wants you to zip it about the health care bill, and just send him your own personal health care woes stories. Things aren't looking up right now.

user-pic

When it comes to Palin, I think the Dems should heed WW's thought:

"Never attempt to murder a man who is committing suicide." - Woodrow Wilson

user-pic

Sure, but the recession is over. Ben said so.

This is what we should call: BLATHERING FROM INCOMPETENTS

Why is anyone listening to the lies but questioning anything substantively?

....... The same expert who only last year told Congress wonderful fairytales about housing, the markets, and the economy just as the bubble was beginning its implosion.

Apply the controls available, without inventing new ones, and refrain from creating a Nation dependent on its government (through politicized cronyism) for financial success. Prosperity has no address on that road.

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2009/07/bernanke-and-super-fed-say-its-over.html

Make changes at the top and change the structure over money’s controls.

user-pic

Dear Senator Conrad:

We hope you are enjoying Chairing a Senate Committee. We just hope you'll remember that you wouldn't be Chair of Diddley-Squat if not for all of us grassroots activists around the country who helped to elect the Senate Democratic majority.

So it seems a tad ungrateful when you say you will not work with the Democratic majority and insist your Republican friends be appeased. Their way was tried and failed at great personal and financial costs to the American people.

Senator Conrad, don't forget who brought ya the Chair.
