Americans United Ad Targets "Real Death Panels" At Insurance Companies
Americans United For Change has this new TV ad, set to run next week on national cable and DC cable, taking the "real death panels" -- the ones in private insurance corporations that will deny necessary care:
The ad has footage of a former medical director for Humana and Blue Cross/Blue Shield: "In the spring of 1987, as a physician, I denied a man a necessary operation that would have saved his life, and thus caused his death...and I am haunted by the thousands of pieces of paper on which I have written that deadly word, 'denied.'"
Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will meet with former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who had also been his original nominee for Sec. of Health and Human Services, at 11 a.m. ET. At 1 p.m. ET, Obama will depart the White House, en route to Camp David.
Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden is spending the day in Washington, DC. He will have private meetings with senior staff in the morning, and will receive a briefing on the Recovery Act. In the afternoon, he will accompany his wife Jill Biden to a follow-up appointment for her shoulder surgery from earlier this month. They will return in the evening to Wilmington, Delaware.
Poll: Faith In Obama Drops
A new ABC/Washington Post poll finds a decline in national confidence in President Obama has occurred over this summer. Only 49% now express confidence that Obama will make the right decisions for the country, down 11 points from the 100-day mark in his presidency. In addition, 50% now disapprove of how Obama is handling the key issue of health care.
Massachusetts GOP Calls Foul On Kennedy's Request For Changes To State Law On Senate Vacancies
Massachusetts Republicans are lashing out at Sen. Ted Kennedy's (D-MA) request that the state alter its succession laws to provide for a quick appointment to the Senate -- after state Democratic leaders had put special elections in place in 2004, when Sen. John Kerry was running for President and Republican Mitt Romney was Governor. "The hypocrisy is astounding," said state House Minority Leader Brad Jones. "If we had a Republican governor right now, would we be getting that same letter?"
Democrats To Continue Attacks On Insurance Industry
The Hill reports that House Democrats have not given up on a strategy of attacking the private health insurance industry: "Democratic aides familiar with the [House Energy and Commerce] committee said leaders have not closed the door on a series of high-profile hearings this fall, in which top insurance CEOs would be called before the committee to explain hundreds of millions in expenditures on salaries and lavish corporate events."
Bachmann On Cable News Every Nine Days
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has been increasing her presence on national TV, a new study finds. Already this year, Bachmann has matched her total number of TV appearances from all of 2008, and has averaged an appearance every 9.1 days in 2009, compared to every 16.6 days in 2008.

The publicity she gets is why I think it might be best to ignore her, and Palin for that matter.

Half of me agrees with you completely, and the other half feels like the more the merrier because it shows how completely unhinged, disconnected from reality and batshit crazy today's Republican Party is.

I agree with your first half and Rich: the more exposure she gets, the more normalized she becomes. The more people see her without any kind of critical filter, the more people come to accept her as a familiar face with an orthodox point of view. Very dangerous.

I guess I shouldn't be, but I am surprised at how effective the astroturfers and wingnuts have been in the healthcare debate.
Grassley stirring up fear and anger then using fear and anger as a pretext to kill reform. Sigh.
I still believe in Barackarate and hope he will be able to flip this as he did so often in the campaign.

And yet Baucus still insists on trying to negotiate with this douchebag. Which I guess is his passive-aggressive way of doing the dirty work for his insurance company benefactors.

We underestimated the competence of the Dems to seize control of the debate. I suspect the Dems underestimated just how gullible the average media consumer is and how easy it is to manipulate them with time tested propaganda techniques like The Big Lie and Scare The Shit Outta Them. Republicans sure haven't forgotten how to play the game.

Polls numbers tend to vacillate when a president is proposing bold policies. A watered down "bipartisan" bill won't fix the problems of cost containment and expanded coverage. Take the short-term hit to do what's necessary (e.g., a broad choice of plans available in a health care exchange and a robust public option), so that the plan will do what is intended. The public will support that end result no matter how the process looks at any given time as it is being mischaracterized by the those seeking to protect entrenched interests.

Cosign on the House Dems strategy against private health insurers. Drag the vampires in front of you and scold them on a daily basis if you have to. These scoundrels need a public whooping.

OMG OMG OMG and every time we do a front page story that say Obama's numbers dipping, the next day's poll show the previous day frotn page story had an effect!!! OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! WaPo+ABC = rightwing media circle jerk

Poll: Faith In Obama Drops
As a liberal I must say my faith in Obama has dropped. I was hesitant about him from the start because his desire to please appears to drive him more than his progressive sensibilities.
Massachusetts GOP Calls Foul On Kennedy's Request For Changes To State Law On Senate Vacancies
How about a compromise that allows an appointment to the Senate followed by an election five months from the appointment?
Democrats To Continue Attacks On Insurance Industry
The leadership from the White House to both chambers of Congress on this issue has been tone deaf. Just let Barney Frank handle the politics of health care. Barney Frank should be the speaker of the House. He is smarter and more politically savvy than any DEM in then House or Senate. Don't go after the insurance companies, go after your political opponents, and use a sledge hammer.
Bachmann On Cable News Every Nine Days
She is Palin lite and everyone on the left and right know it. She is not looked at as a leader, only as a provacoteur. Cable TV loves that.

I think having Bachmann on the tv all the time is pure win for the Dems, so much so her's maybe the only Rep. seat I hope they do not loose. Every time she appears as the face of the GOP 55% of the population recoils in horror. You can actually win elections with 55% of the population thinking you are the preferable political party to be running things.

There is just so much lies and mistruths passed around it's obvious people would be skeptical about HC. It's really disconcerting that lies can just be spread so easily.

It's easy to imagine that Michele Bachmann is good for cable ratings. She's fascinating in much the same way as a freeway accident, you just can't not look. Whether or not she's an effective communicator of the GOP message is a great question. If she is, then this country is almost certainly doomed.
