Bachmann: Fight Against Health Care Bill Will Be Won "On Our Knees In Prayer And Fasting"

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) made an interesting appeal to conservative activists last week on a telephone town hall hosted by the conservative Susan B. Anthony List, the Minnesota Independent reports: To help stop the Democrats' health care bill, through the power of fasting and intercessionary prayer.

Bachmann praised Sarah Palin for raising the alarm about "death panels" that would deny any health care to the elderly and mentally disabled. "Thank God that Sarah Palin said that," said Bachmann. "These are true." Bachmann also warned against the government forcing doctors to perform abortions, and urged callers to oppose it with all their energies -- and their prayers.

"That's really where this battle will be won -- on our knees in prayer and fasting," said Bachmann. "Remember: faith without works is dead. So we're asking you to do all of it: pray, fast, believe, trust the Lord, but also act."

It should be noted that prayer and fasting both have a prominent place in Bachmann's political career. Back in 2006, she publicly discussed how she and her husband made sure that God really was calling her to run for Congress:

"And then in the midst of that calling, God then called me to run for the United States Congress. And I thought, 'what in the world would that be for?' And my husband said, 'You need to do this,' and I wasn't so sure. And we took three days and we fasted and we prayed, and we said, 'Lord is this what You want? Is this Your will?' And after the -- along about the afternoon of day two, He made that calling sure. And it's been now 22 months that I've been running for United States Congress. Who in their right mind would spent two years to run for a job that lasts for two years? You'd have to be absolutely a fool to do that. You are now looking at a fool for Christ. This is a fool for Christ."

Belt and suspenders?

In any event, they will probably succeed in preventing death panels and forced abortions, since those aren't part of any bill, or even remotely contemplated by any health care reform advocate!

I was wondering the very same thing!!

Hmmm, but this passage from the Wikipedia article about her may be a clue:

Anthony's birthplace in Adams was purchased in August 2006 by Carol Crossed, founder of the New York chapter of Democrats for Life of America, affiliated with Feminists for Life.

A familiar wingnut meme is that Anthony was pro-life (of course, that label had absolutely no relevance in Anthony's time). However, her position was a little more complicated then they portray it:

In her writings, Susan B. Anthony occasionally mentioned abortion. Susan B. Anthony opposed abortion which at the time was an unsafe medical procedure for women, endangering their health and life. She blamed men, laws and the "double standard" for driving women to abortion because they had no other options. ("When a woman destroys the life of her unborn child, it is a sign that, by education or circumstances, she has been greatly wronged." 1869) She believed, as did many of the feminists of her era, that only the achievement of women's equality and freedom would end the need for abortion. Anthony used her anti-abortion writings as yet another argument for women's rights.

Anyway, hasn't Bachmann already come out as pro-choice?

Sometimes you have to set aside the laughter and just contemplate how horrifying she truly is as a political phenomonon. She's every bit as dangerously delusional as any of the 9/11 hijackers were, and yet she's a member of the United States Congress. And, indeed, in her own crazy way, a bit of a political star.

It's a lesson in the perils of gerrymandering. There are two basic techniques that get used, "packing" and "cracking." The state legislators try to "crack" areas where members of the opposing party predominate into districts where they'll be in the minority or "pack" them into districts where they'll be highly highly concentrated thereby minimizing the number of districts the other side's voters can affect.

"Cracking" is risky because it produces districts that can end up flipping due to demographic changes between one census and the next. "Packing" is risky because it can produce Bachmanns. It concentrates the crazy.

August 25, 2009 5:10 PM    in reply to The Commenter Formerly Known as NCSteve

You've got it reversed. The district is the result of packing (your terms) the twin cities urban centers into very liberal areas. One is represented by Keith Ellison. I'm not sure that's concentrating the crazy.

Bachmann's district is, as you put it, cracked. It's really a quite purple district. Bachmann has only won her seat due to a strong (~10%) showing from the alleged Independence Party.

Bottom line tho - if MN districts 2-6 were fairly drawn, they would be 6 Democrats not 3+3. Kline, Paulsen & Bachmann would be history.

I encourage Michelle Bachmann and her followers to fast as long as possible in order to ensure their success. I recommend a fasting program lasting approximate one month, wherein these people eat nothing but their own Bibles, and drink only sea water, just like Jesus walked on. By the end of the month, they will no longer have to worry about government-run healthcare.

Seriously, though, if you want another example of what toxic garbage religion is in the 21st century, look no further than the lurid, obscene nonsense that pours from Michelle Bachmann's deluded little mouth on a regular basis. This woman is in office because of how many people buy into her sociopathic outlook.

I know there are Democratic strategists who would probably advise against this, but I really and truly think that the candidate debates for her congressional seat should be a forum on Michele Bachmann's total detachment from reality. I think that every single opportunity to quote her and put her on the spot to defend her lunatic ravings, set in contrast with reality, should be taken.

The continuous laughter from the audience alone would make it worthwhile.

If Democratic strategists don't like it, that's the first clue it's probably a worthwhile idea. As for fasting, given the girth of a typical teabagger, that may be one steep hill to climb. Instead of fasting, maybe she should have suggested a good off-road vehicle ride to, you know, think about stuff.

Why is it that the most vocal so-called evangelicals and fundamentalists in the country are the ones that spew the "every man for himself conservative politics?" The profess to follow a Christ that preached exactly the opposite of what they stand for.

I was channeling that same thought earlier today! "As ye have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me." If the real Jesus were to appear in the US today, they'd lock him up in a detention center and deport him. Or maybe even send him to Guantanamo Bay.

I think a lot of these guys follow the C Street version of Christ, where the message is basically, "Them that's got shall get," and "The meek shall eat dust." If there is such a thing as an antichrist, it would be C Street's version.

At the very least, if the real Jesus appeared in a MINN town today, Bachmann would probably call the cops to have them check out this hippie-ish guy with long hair & weird clothes, just like someone did with Bob Dylan in Long Branch, NJ a few weeks ago. Please help us keep billions of dollars in excess profits in the hands of big corporations at the expense of the people of this country! Please help us keep massive inefficiencies and failures in our medical system! Please help keep control of the system of medical care and insurance out of the hands of our elected representatives, and in the hands of faceless corporations! Please help us protect those corporations from the risk of lawsuits that might force them to change their ways even a little! Please help us keep the masses from realizing our lies!"

Organized religion is comprised of 2 kinds of people.

1. Leaders: Folks who use religion to advance their own personal agenda regardless of intended meaning of the scripture they selectively and wrongly quote.

Examples: Bush, Cheney, Palin, Fox News, Dick Armey, Newt, Bachmann, bin Laden, Ahmedinijad.

2. Followers: Folks who need the certainty of faith to back up there lack of education and/or general lack of curiosity to search for their own opinions through thoughful analysis of available evidence and independantly verifiable facts.

Examples: Teabaggers, Racists, Evangelicals, Gun Nuts, Terrorists, Suicide bombers

BIASED REPORTING ALERT:
TPM, why is the Bachmann photo cropped so that her halo is (conveniently) NOT in the picture?!?!?! ;^)

As a general rule, if you just read and watch the MSM, you don't learn about this stuff. OTOH, the best thing to do is just ignore it, because to do any more is to get swallowed up in its foolishness and become sidetracked, refuting or ridiculing it, instead of working to advance health care reform, including a strong public option, and end of life counseling when desired. Statements like hers or Palins, aren't expected to do any more than make us take our eye off the ball by getting us off on a tangent. Don't fall for it.

She is supposedly a Wisconsin Synod Lutheran. I had to laugh about her quote about faith without good works being nothing as one of the prime claims of Luther's breaking with Rome (aside from a little fraudulent marketing of salvation) was his reliance on the passage from Romans about justification by faith alone. It looks like her ignorance of history extends to religion as well.

Her ignorance (intentional or otherwise) knows no limits...

Bachmann is truly brainless. How did she get voted into office? There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?page_id=588

* Sigh * I've been away for a while. Old Faithful brought me back into the fold. Here's some insight into The District of the Possessed.
Bachmann's district is the result of intricate, highly engineered gerrymandering. The suburban neighborhoods were developed with the paranoid, unhinged evangelicals in mind. It's all freaky white people, all the time. Gated communities. Roving bands of SUVigilantes. You can't just drive into this place. You gotta pass through a portal that takes you to a (highly) alternative reality.

I once drove my motorcycle through the portal. It turned my hair white. The weirdest thing about this District of the Damned is the constant howling. They don't talk. They howl.

Good to be back.

Yes, pray against taking care of the sick. God will love that. Good thinking, MB.

Hey Michele, I'm on the same direct line to god as you.....

During our call with the big fella, I heard him recite that "you're running from progress" - he didn't say you're running for congress.

You better recheck things with the prayer group on C Street....I think they heard the same thing as me. See you at next weeks conference call - I mean prayer session with the gang. Will George Bush be there next week - or is Gov. Sanford leading things?

This is the truest form of "Taking the lord's name in Vain"

She is using Religion to prop up her own Vanity. She is decorating herself with Christ by claiming he speaks directly to and therefore through her.

I may be an Athiest but I know Blasphemy when I see it.

I don't know about anyone else but, personally, I LOVE Michelle Bachmann. The way I look at it, there will inevitably be some number of far right wackaloons in Congress (the House in particular) and at the least Bachmann does it up true to form.

Other than the fact that she is a duly elected representative of MN-6, she's overtly insane enough to be relatively harmless. The really dangerous people are those who retain a veneer of sanity while being just as toxic.

I say if the sixth district sees fit to keep her in office, then let them. Her entertainment value alone keeps me watching.

My condolences to anyone in the sixth that has sense enough to know she's batshit crazy...coming from someone living in the state that elected John Ashcroft.
