Birther Vortex Sucks In Innocent Australian Man

It's become very clear that the Birthers simply aren't going to stop -- ever. In fact, their craziness and ineptitude is now starting to spread over the whole globe in some pretty funny ways.

The Birthers dragged a complete bystander from yet another country, David Bomford of Adelaide, Australia, into this whole mess. And now, it appears, their ringleader is saying that he's the phony. It really is worth thinking about what has happened here.

After Orly Taitz released the quickly-debunked forged Kenyan birth certificate, it was discovered that the document was altered from a source document that didn't even come from Kenya, but was taken from Bomford's family genealogy site.

Bomford himself chimed in, and told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he would be taking his birth certificate off the family genealogy Web site, after security experts said he'd left himself open to identity theft. But he did seem a bit entertained about the whole experience: "I'm not particularly worried about it because no-one would honestly believe that anyone like me would be involved in it - just a grey-haired old guy sitting in a corner in quiet old Adelaide."

But Taitz is carrying on, having posted two days ago on her Web site that Bomford's certificate is the suspect one: "Bomford report was created to try to discredit my efforts." (Note: the Taitz site may contain malware.)

The new Pew poll -- conducted before the recent flap over the forged Kenyan certificate, but after the whole subject had been thoroughly savaged in the media -- shows that 39% of Republicans say the Birther allegations have received too little coverage. Another 27% of Republicans say the subject has received the right amount of coverage, and only 26% of GOPers say it's gotten too much.

They won't stop until Obama changes his race. This will go on for 8 years. Pathetic.

user-pic

Pretty much sums it up.

user-pic

But he has two! Which one is he supposed to change? ;)

user-pic

I took a look at Orly's website. Too bad about her spelling, capitalization and grammar! Someone might get the impression that she is unprofessional.

user-pic

Wow. Brave of you on so many levels to navigate that site... I hope you have good virus blocking tools and a dandy firewall.

user-pic

And some penicillin!

user-pic

I went ahead and visited as well, although it only takes a few seconds before all the crazy spewed into that default WordPress template gets to you. I don't worry too much about ignoring "attack site" warnings since I'm on a Linux desktop. But it's pretty amazing that *that* is the website of this woman who's racked up so much cable airtime.

user-pic

Most of those entries are from her fanclub crazies.

user-pic

Somehow you just knew that this would be Taitz's response. The funny thing is that the crowds are still shouting that Obama could end this all by releasing his "long form birth certificate." What this episode proves is that nothing would ever end the Birther sage. In the same way that Taitz will say that Bomford's certificate was the fake and the Obama certificate is the real one, any documents that Hawai'i would release would be dismissed as forgeries and hoaxes (they would claim that the White House forced the Hawai'ian government to become complicit in the conspiracy). Moreover, Taitz is already arguing that even if Obama had been born in this country, he ceased to be a citizen when his Indonesian step-father adopted him, so even if Obama had twenty bishops and a stack of long-form birth certificates behind him, they would still argue that he is not eligible to be president.

In other words, these folks are nuts, and will not cease from being nuts no matter what accommodations they are offered. Maybe they will get better once Obama leaves office, but on the other hand, I suspect that many of them have permanently taken leave of sanity.

user-pic

"...I suspect that many of them have permanently taken leave of sanity."

There's an implicit assumption there that I'm not sure is justified.

user-pic

And I'm not sure it's not ;)

user-pic

No, that seems accurate to me. :P

user-pic

I believe the implicit assumption is that they were sane to begin with.

user-pic

Yup.

user-pic

Point to you.

user-pic

exactly. no proof would be good enough.

user-pic

Taitz is already arguing that even if Obama had been born in this country, he ceased to be a citizen when his Indonesian step-father adopted him . . .

Wow, she doesn't even know the elementary facts about the area of law she's litigating.

user-pic

Oily Taints is the most broadly comedic conservative to appear on the scene in, oh, the past 11 months or so. What I love most about broadly comedic conservatives is that they don't know they're broadly comedic.

user-pic

Yes, but... wouldja?

user-pic

Sometimes I wonder if she's not secretly working for The Daily Show. The whole birther phenomenon reads like a bit on that show...

user-pic

Orly's site (and I suspect Orly herself) contains malware.

user-pic

I'm glad for Bomford that he has geographical distance from these nuts. I imagine his site will get hacked and his e-mail filled with death threats, but at least they won't be able to physically threaten him, unless there's an Australian birther branch.

user-pic

Little to no chance. Aussies laugh at Yankee Republicans.. they're the actual seppos.

user-pic

Obama could make this all go away by simply stepping down as President so that the birthers can start questioning Joe Biden's citizenship or find some other insane reason why he is ineligible to be POTUS, but so far he has REFUSED to do so. So much for a new era of bi-partisanship!

user-pic

Giggle.

user-pic

Easy one. He's ineligible because BHO was ineligible. See? The whole ticket is invalidated, so there.

Ow. That made my brain hurt. I hope there wasn't any lasting damagawerq[n0hq3 9-qu3\ u1 u24

user-pic

Totally off topic, but these Evony ads are some wierd, wierd stuff. I realize that TPM has rather little control over the ads that run on this site, but to the extent that anyone can do something about it, I would submit that the "start your journey now, my Lord" ad is in really poor (read "sexist") taste.

user-pic

Those ads are all over the place for some reason. The only ads I see more of are the "simple steps for a sexy stomach" ads hawking acai berries (which don't work, according to every doctor I've spoken to).

I guess Josh will take his money wherever it comes from. I remember some hilarious moments during the 2008 campaign when the banner ad on the side was directly contradicted by Eric or Greg's story.

user-pic

You mean the ones you see at sites like Talking Points Memo? God, I hate those. AdBlock Plus FTW!

user-pic

Boobs in your face, anyone?

user-pic

The ad space is filled by another company which manages the buys; no ads are chosen by TPM itself, AFAIK.

Also, the evony ads you mention have been widely panned as cheesy and sexist, and even parodied by another game company here:

http://www.destructoid.com/popcap-parodies-obnoxious-evony-ads-with-one-of-their-own-141867.phtml

user-pic

The headline gives me the image of an Eliminator from the Fairly Odd Parents cartoon.

user-pic

Any day now, the Orly Taitz character will pull off "her" wig and mask and reveal "herself" as Sacha Baron Cohen.

user-pic

on that note, I love the shoulder pads in that pink blouse

user-pic

That Baron-Cohen guy sure gets around...

user-pic

My theory is a little different: I think she is a male extraterrestrial alien trying to pass as an earth woman.

user-pic

Redundancy - extraterrestrial alien - Redundancy
Redundancy - extraterrestrial alien - Redundancy

user-pic

Not redundant at all: what if he were a naturalized citizen?

user-pic

Men in Black, where are you when we need you?

user-pic

Notice she has yet to release her long form birth certificate, so you may be on to something. ;)

user-pic

Yeah, I'm having my doubts that our Orly is, in the traditional sense of the term, a woman.

user-pic

What you are now seeing is that the 30-yr incubation of crazy, starting with Reagan and fueled by right-wing talk radio, is finally reaching critical mass.

Sane people keep looking at reality and thinking "OK, just one more election and we can put the stake in the heart" but this is a new breed of undead. Crosses, garlic, stakes--as Peter Venkman said, "OK, the usual stuff's not working......"

user-pic

Wait, I just bought some Yellowcake uranium from these people. Are you saying that that isn't right either? They showed me the paperwork!

user-pic

The GOP really needs to be taken to task over this - they encouraged, nutured, and raised this monster. Time for them to fully own it. They've collectively proven themselves too stupid to be trusted with anything sharper than a sponge.

user-pic

I agree. If the party won't stand against the bizarre teabaggers and birthers, then let them become the party's brand.

user-pic

The teabaggers need to be rounded up and dumped in Boston Harbor.

user-pic

"...trusted with anything sharper than a sponge." FTW!

user-pic

Photos from the creation of the "Kenya document". (h/t washington independent)

user-pic

I enjoy the way TPM has worked the words "queen," "dragged," and "sucks" into the headline and the story!

user-pic

Why I spit my chips all over the bar last night -

While having a beer and chips, I overheard two black girls talking about the birthers and the fact that Obama is receiving 4 times the number of death threats than any other President. One of the girls said, "If they are getting this excited about Obama, can you imagine what would have happened if Al Sharpton had won?"

That's when the chips got launched, because I can imagine!

user-pic

Why is this t w a t's face once again front and center? The hell with her! Every minute we pay attention to her nuttiness, is another moment the dialogue is poisoned a drop at a time.

user-pic

This is all so ridiculously simple to resolve!
All Barack H(you know the rest) Obama has to do is sign the following document on live television (this can be carried be all three major networks simulataneously... I recommend around noon so that time zone issues can be avoided):

I Barach Hussein Obama II swear (or affirm) that I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, considered to be a State of the Union, to an American mother and a Kenyan father, so, technically, I am a citizen of the United States. And even though I ran for public office before I signed this document (affirmation) I hold this to be retroactive to November 3, 2008.

If he sings this on national TV, THEN I'll be satisfied.

user-pic

"Barach Hussein Obama II"? So he's both Jewish and Muslim in addition to being a socialist and a terrorist? The man really does know how to find common ground!

For the record, I, also, would be satisfied if Obama sang on national television.

user-pic

You can laguh at me all you want, but people like me wont go away just because were crazy.

user-pic

Ok, I'll bite what is the other reasons you will go away?

user-pic

I dont get it... what do you mean, other reasons?

user-pic

Nina, you are both lovely and precious.

user-pic

See below. My snark meter was off its calibration. Mea culpa.

user-pic

Is it just me or do others get a hint of the uncanny valley when they see pictures of Orly?

user-pic

I think it's time for the administration to start messing with the birthers. Obama should send Taitz a poor quality audio message confessing to holding an Iranian passport. Gibbs should start making ambiguous comments which are easily interpreted as supporting the birther position.

And then there's Biden. He should do an interview where he says "come to think of it, I haven't seen his birth certificate either" and maybe follow it up by musing "so if it turns out he wasn't born here does that mean that I would become president or would it be McCain?".

Birthers clearly aren't going away. Obama might as well have a little fun with them.

user-pic

I read a post somewhere, might have been Huffington where this wingnut starts saying yes but Bomford is a well known shill of such and such and blah blah blah and can't be trusted and his claim is a sham and he's a plant and he's not real blah blah insert aluminum foil hat here. They will now have to plant the REAL Bomford birth certificate to round out their new story. I mean their idea of the real one. Oh my head. This thing is turning into an Escher drawing.

user-pic

Firefox stops me from going to her site with a big warning:

user-pic

Sounds like it came right out of the movie G-Force

user-pic

Firefox and Mozilla are part of the conspiracy!

Now I'm just waiting for the first right-wing propagandist to allege that media coverage of Oily Taints is proof of the left-wing media's campaign to discredit conservatives as being nutcases.

user-pic

This story is truly hilarious. Stephen Colbert was brilliant with her; she never had a clue what was going on.

http://www.enewse.com/

user-pic

The Head of the Birther's Website contains Malware? Doesn't anyone think that that is a story in itself.

user-pic

That IS a story in and of itself already. Her and her fans are already claiming that lefties and/or other birthers have hacked her site and put up a doctored image of the Kenya BC (I'm not shitting you).

Apparently there is a schism even among the leading birthers, and there are alledged lawsuits against Orly by Phil Berg (of the East Coast Birther Movement) and other birthers over claims of threats, fraud, libel, data theft, hacking of websites, etc.

Pass the popcorn.

user-pic

There's the right, the far-right, the fringe & now the tattered fringe. When you get all the way out there to the end & there's no sanity left at all, you find, with eyes wide open & whig on tight, Orly.
With credentials like hers, who could doubt her?
A Dentist, Real Estate broker, document authenticator & forger, now lobbyist & crusader. Phony & liar aren't really jobs so she can't fake those onto her resume, although she might be able to spin those into actress & yarn weaver.
She could also step up her game & become a birther/deather. Throw in a few teabags & you have a complete, verifiable, right-wing nutjob.

user-pic

"Is it just me or do others get a hint of the uncanny valley when they see pictures of Orly?"

It is not just you, and thank you for the link. I did not know there was a technical term for that. I experience the same sense of "There's something wrong with her" looking at Ann Coulter and Boy George.

user-pic

The first thing I thought of when I saw Orly for the first time (besides the O RLY? owl) was that she had the same qualities as Ann Coulter that caused me to realize that conservatives sure have a knack for drafting transsexuals to be their nutjobs. Maybe it's their way of legitimizing queer conservatives, or maybe it's an elaborate form of drag. It's really hard to say which.

user-pic

I would totally do her!

user-pic

Please tell me that's snark.

user-pic

Isn't today the court date for Taitz's hearing on this "birth certificate?"

user-pic

Yeah, I was wondering when that was. AND I was wondering if there is some sort of penalty for submitting a fraudulent document -- ??

I hope so. $$

user-pic

Well Lestat, of course I wouldn't give her any contact information. Who needs a lunatic like that stalking them?

user-pic

Orly is the best. Rather than merely stoke the conspiracy theory with hearsay, she boldly falsifies evidence and then blames the victims for her actions. She is our generation's Kaufman. Deep comedy. The kind of performance art that transcends all limtations of taste and sanity.

user-pic

I think some of the hate against Orly thats coming from you sitedwellers is understandable dis-like you have against dentists in general, and speciafically those with political agendas and those with unverifiable credentials from the Mideast. OK I GET all the bad stuff youve got against unlicenced dentists! SO Go to someone with an American degree then! BUT pay attention to her argument! Thats all Im asking.

user-pic

In case your comment is not snark... she has no argument. The President was born in Hawaii, and even if he wasn't (though he was) he is a natural born citizen because his mother was/is most certainly one and the laws in place at the time automatically conferred citizenship to him at birth (just like any other natural born citizen is upon birth).

This is nothing but an inability of a segment of the country to accept that Barack Obama, a black Democrat was elected POTUS by the majority of our citizenry via a valid election.

Orly Taitz, and all the birthers and screamers HAVE no valid argument or point to merit paying attention to, other than keeping an eye on these potentially dangerous extremist whack-jobs.

user-pic

Sorry Lestatdelc... I've been snarking all the while.

IMHO, these pinheads, of which Orly is the pointiest, are just channeling their general hate through a convenient valve; i.e. the intersection of the "natural born citizen" clause and the understandable ambiguity inherent in the phenomenon of state records going digital. These guys just love it when people who would normally ignore them are cornered by circumstance into paying attention to them.

Sorry for snarking not clearly enough!

user-pic

Whew. Thanks for clarifying. I haven't been reading the comments in the tubes as much since the elections until the past week or so, and hence my radar was not that well-tuned. I had thought I saw you post in the past with non-batshit-crazy views which made me wonder.

user-pic

You guys are such suckers....Orly Taitz is really Sacha Baron Cohen. Her kids are named after airports too: Sea-Tac, Gander, Islip and Narita. She told me she's pregnant and her new son will be Ronald Reagan International.

user-pic

Thanks a lot! I happened to have had a mouthful of coffee when I read that comment -- now it's all over the monitor. Plus, now I'll be under-caffeinated all day.

user-pic

Many complexities here, all pathological and deeply psychological.

For many birthers who are merely partisan they want to believe that something is amiss in that they cannot see how 60% or more of the nation didn't see the world their way.

For many veiled racists they use birther talk akin to how the old polite South used the term 'boy' instead of the slur that open racists used.

Then there are the zealots. Orly is as much a Muslim bigot as she is a racial bigot and has the law and the idea of citizen all twisted like a pretzel.

She holds that because Obama's father was not natural born or naturalized Obama is not a citizen holding that both parents must be of citizenship---that of course is incorrect. Then she holds because of the adoption he lost his citizenship which of course is not held in case law. Then she holds that Obama was secretly born abroad and that a vast left wing conspiracy exists to defraud the world of an illegitimate leader.

As the debunking continues though I think we will see emerging deeper more sinister right wing forces at work, possibly the same crew that forged the Niger Uranium Memos that the Bush Admin picked up and then pointing back to a very dark side of American spooks and what nots.

user-pic

I want to see Jesus' birth certificate. Until then, no more of this "Son of God" crap, okay?

user-pic

FTW

user-pic

HA!

user-pic

...and it better be THE LONG FORM. With an EMBOSSED SEAL.

user-pic

So I wonder what the libel laws are like in australia...

user-pic

Only good thing I can say about her is that it's nice to hear from a batshit insane Israeli who, for once, doesn't have an American accent.

user-pic

Oily Taint strikes again!!!!!

(Come on, that can't be a real name!! She's a fake!)

user-pic

By the birther's logic (oxymoron alert!), I, and many other second and third generation Americans, must not be a citizen either because my paternal grandfather was born in Italy. He thought he'd become one by marriage because my grandmother was born in America in 1901. Unfortunately she couldn't prove it because birth records were pretty sketchy circa early 1900's and Pennsylvania could not provide a copy of her birth certificate. I found all the associated paperwork while going through my father's things.

Damn! I was going to switch parties and challenge Palin in 2012. You betcha!

user-pic

The birthers (and neocons) aren't interested in facts or truth. Their fantasy world was destroyed last November and now they are doing doing anything they can to bring their delusions back.

The birthers are just out and out crazy. You can't reason with crazy. You just get out of the way, and make sure they don't hurt anyone.

The neocons Republicans aren't crazy. They know the truth, but they are hoping to distract their base from their own neocon Republican failures. You can't reason facts and truth with these guys either. These guys don't really care.

It is now well past time for the Democratic Congress and the President, and the Democratic leadership to stop treating these people as if they are reasonable. These nutjobs need to start learning some tough love.

user-pic

Innocent Australian? Who's Bomford? I thought you were referring to Rupert Murdoch ... but then, I guess he wouldn't be innocent.
