Chamber of Commerce Targets Public Option In Anti-Health Care Reform Ad Campaign
Here's a new anti-health care reform ad from the Chamber of Commerce, going live today in 20 key states, which attacks the public option.
The ad also warns of "big tax increases, even on health benefits" though a tax health care benefits hasn't been officially proposed. The TV spot will be accompanied by a radio segment, which you can listen to here. And for more information on the cost of the buy, and the its likely targets, see The Plum Line.
For a bit of perspective, recall that though the Chamber has dedicated plenty of resources to attacking health care reform efforts, it's also explicitly commended the slow pace and watered down ideas coming out of the Senate Finance Committee.

Almost every city that I know of gives a subsidy to their local chamber of commerce. Each of these local chambers pays a fee to belong to the national chamber. It's like laundering taxpayer money to pay for this ad.

I know, the anti-tax folks happily using tax money for their own political ends...Hypocrisy right?
I fear that pointing out Republican (and Rep leaning organization's) Hypocrisy has little effect as their intended audience is looking for Red Meat that they can attmt to hide their racism behind, not facts.
Maybe thay should change their mascot from the Elephant to the Hippopotamus

Here is what I don't understand. Businesses are really struggling with healthcare costs so why is the Chamber so anti-reform? Honestly. Are they just dominated by the insurance and pharma industries? So maybe they believe taxes would go up based on this but businesses large and small would save buckets of money in their healthcare expenses. For that matter, I can't understand why the Chamber isn't out leading the charge FOR reform.
Anyone?

You are falling into the fallacy that most progressives fall into : appealing to Logic.
The rethug party is a cadre party - thus reality does not come from logic or independent thought, it comes from the leadership.
Most members of the Chamber are rethugs, and they take their walking papers from the party. For them it is Party first / Country last.

I'd say it's a combination of insurance industry influence and ideological blinders so powerful that they're truly unable to see or to accept that this could actually be in their "self interest," broadly construed.

A quick review of the US Chamber website and their senior management and Board reveals that they are all either health insurance and health industry execs and/or planted Bush regime political operatives/appointees, so it is really only surprising that the US Chamber of Commerce is so totally co-opted by big biz/neocons while they pretend to be supportive of small biz in the local chapters. The good news is that all of these shadow people are now being revealed for what they are...
