Christie Getting Hit Hard By Media, Dem Attacks
Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, the Republican nominee for Governor of New Jersey, is starting to get a rough time in the press in the wake of newly-unsealed files that showed he discussed with Karl Rove a potential run for governor while he was still U.S. Attorney.
The New York Times has a new article showing that one of Christie's top issues -- no-bid contracts -- is not such a cut-and-dry issue in his favor. After he'd run against no-bid contracts in a race for the Morris County Board in 1994, he then failed in his reform push and subsequently went with the flow, approving no-bid contracts that included his own contributors:
"I'm much better now than I was 15 years ago," he said. "I'm more mature, and I'm convinced I'll be more successful."
Mr. Christie still expressed outrage at no-bid contracts when he became a federal prosecutor -- in 2002, he called them "the biggest problem in corruption in New Jersey" -- but in the interview he backed away somewhat from his criticism.
"I think there's more things that are involved than I understood at the time," he said. "I no longer think it's the biggest thing, but it's still an element, no question."
And now Corzine has stepped up the rhetoric against Christie, telling a panel at Netroots Nation that his opponent, a supposed champion of clean government, is a "lawbreaker" due to his discussions with Rove:
Said Corzine: "It is hard to understand how a lawbreaker gets the reputation of being the king of law enforcement, and uses that as a platform. It's the Hatch Act."
In addition, the Rove news has raised questions from Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who was subpoenaed by Christie in the run-up to his 2006 election -- a probe that went nowhere after that, but did enable Republican Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. to warn voters that Menendez was under investigation. Democrats in New Jersey have long suspected that the subpoena was a political hit.
Menendez said on Friday:
"I think it's incumbent on the U.S. Attorney's Office to come to come to a conclusion, particularly when it involves a public official, and to let that conclusion be made public," the senator said. "That's been my position for over four years.
"Because the most important thing that every American - we just had a debate about a Supreme Court Justice, and I recite what it says above the mantle as you enter the Supreme Court - the most important thing is 'Equal Justice under Law.' That means whether you are Democrat or a Republican or an independent, you are not going to be prosecuted because of the nature of your affiliations. That's been put into question by the information that's come out."
Christie is ahead in the polls right now, but it's become very clear that the new two and a half months will be a brutal time for him, as the media continues to raise questions on his record and as the Democrats tear away at him for both those issues and his status as a former member of the Bush Administration in a heavily Democratic state. Christie had been getting a fairly easy time of it until now, but that has now very much changed.

About time. I'm surprised the Menendez issue wasn't getting traction earlier.
And, if I may be totally superficial for a moment, Christie looks like a slimeball, which -- given how little-known he still is to many voters -- may make it easy for people to believe the worst about him.

That's exactly what my husband, who hasn't been paying much attention to the race, said when an anti-Christie ad aired while we were watching TV this weekend. The ads (which have been pretty successful in making Christie seem ethically challenged) have been all over the TV, and pro-Christie/anti-Corzine ads have been much fewer in number.
BTW, Eric, I think the phrase you want is "cut and dried." Cut and dry is what they do at the hair salon.

Oh, ethically-challenged. It really is a mental condition, isn't it?

In shades of Pulp Fiction, I do believe Christie's backyard boasts a sign reading "Dead Hooker Storage".

Christie is a slime ball. Maybe by NJ standards that makes him saintly. But, a true Bushie, slime ball, none the less!

The entire political system is rife with scoundrels whose entire desire is to gain power and money... at all costs. When they actually do something to improve this nation, it is accidental and a result of their conniving, not because of any desire to actually do the right thing.
Any honest person with integrity... if elected... will soon learn to play the game or get committee membership voters never hear about. They then become obscure enough name recognition will no longer be enough to get them reelected.
This is what this nation has become. Folks at the top keep their jobs due to name recognition and support from their cronies in power in Washington.... and "
We the People" seem to relish the idea of keeping famous people in charge of our lives... as we slide deeper and deeper down that slope which is taking us to the edge of the cliff from which this nation will not recover.
History will not care which party finalizes the demise because BOTH parties are equal culprits... along with the voters who support them.... IMHO

I just realized reading this headline that I can't take for granted that a Dem in office is better than a Republican in office.
In this case, maybe the Democratic candidate is, in fact, better.
But who really cares about a Democratic majority if they only represent the interests of a select corporate minority?

Oh give me a break. Spare us the "puppet on the left vs. puppet on the right" nonsense. To be sure, I've been disappointed with the administration on several issues. But if you really can't tell a difference between this administration/congress and what we had in 2005 you should have your head checked.

Thank you.
I stand by my opinion that I can't take for granted that having a Democrat in office is intrinsically better than having a Republican in office.

The business with Menendez certainly makes it look like Christie got and kept his job because he was playing the Rove game. Remember that honest US attorneys got fired for not being partisan enough. That Christie didn't get fired raises suspicions about his behavior, and the Menendez affair blows those suspicions into flames.

Christie was not only subject to the Hatch Act. He was responsible for enforcing the Hatch Act.
Kind of like a traffic cop speeding down the center line on Main Street, running red lights, at noon.

"as the media continues to raise questions on his record"
This statement says a lot.
When the MSM is doing its job, which includes reporting on the hypocrisy of politicians(regardless of affiliation) it has an effect. This is how to keep Politicians (relatively)honest. When the media doesn't do its job we end up at war in Iraq, unsustanable tax-cuts, unregulated markets and law breaking Vice-president that never has to answer for his crimes.
The MSM needs to realize that no matter how much they coddle the GOP, anything left of FOX "news" will be labeled as the "Liberal Media". So why should they lose their integrity in their futile attempt to shake that label.

It's starting to look like Jersey will revert to its usual pattern of having Republican challengers polling high against unpopular incumbents through the summer, only to see them roundly thrashed come election time as Dems come to their senses.
