Conrad Office Disputes Report That He'll Vote Against Public Option

On Friday, I highlighted this article from the Jamestown Sun reporting that Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) would vote against a "government-run health care program," and took that term--"government run health care program"--to mean a "public option."

Conrad's office disputes that interpretation, saying that Conrad simply told a crowd in North Dakota he wouldn't let government take over health care. Pressed, Conrad's spokesman said the senator doesn't have an opinion on the public option, because he believes the issue is "moot."

I've reached out to the Sun to see if we can get a rundown of Conrad's exact statements.

So Conrad says he won't oppose a public option -- as long as he doesn't have to?

Push back and these assholes retreat. There's a lesson here.

That people should understand the difference between "health care" and "health insurance"?

Somehow this feels like kremlinology, when we tried to figure out what was going on in the Soviet government by who was standing where during the parades in Red Square. We're looking for every little sign with every little congressman.

A lesson for anyone is public office seems to be that you catch a lot lot crap if you just make a decision and don't jerk people around.

Can't resist the urge to do a Krugman.

Just went and read the story. (Sound of me kicking myself for not going and reading the story). Assuming the local reporter covering the thing managed to accurately convey the gist of what's he said, he left himself a ton 'o room.

What it says he said was that he wouldn't vote for "government-run healthcare." He promised, in other words, to vote against those proposals for a system like Britain's or like Canada's. Yay Kent. He promised to vote against things that aren't being seriously considered by Congress.

But I didn't see anywhere in the story where he said he wouldn't vote for a plan with a public option in it.
