Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), one of the three Republican negotiators on the Senate Finance Committee, said in the GOP weekly address that bills introduced by Democrats "fail" to lower health care costs and will "raid Medicare."
"We need reforms that will actually lower health care costs for working Americans and we need to make sure we do not increase the deficit and add to the record debt we're already passing on to our children and grandchildren," Enzi said. "The bills introduced by Congressional Democrats fail to meet these standards."

"Hello, I'm Mike Enzi, from the State of Wyoming and the Ranking Member of the Senate's Health Committee.
"Before I begin my remarks I want to acknowledge the loss of a great leader this week - one who's influenced policy for almost half a century. Senator Ted Kennedy has been a tireless champion on a wide range of important issues and his voice will be missed in the Senate. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time.
"I would now like to take a few minutes to speak with you about the current health care reform debate in America. Across the country, people are concerned about the reform bills Democrats have proposed. I heard a lot of frustration and anger as I traveled across my home state this last few weeks. I know my colleagues in the Senate have also heard loud and clear the worries so many Americans have about the changes to their health care being considered.
"People in Wyoming and across the country are anxious about what Washington has in mind.
"This is big.
"This is personal.
"This is one of the most important debates of our lifetime.
"If Congress and the administration mess this up, each and every one of us will pay for the mistakes, as will generations to come.
"We need health care reform - but more importantly, we need to get it right. We need reforms that will actually lower health care costs for working Americans and we need to make sure we do not increase the deficit and add to the record debt we're already passing on to our children and grandchildren.
"The bills introduced by Congressional Democrats fail to meet these standards.
"According to the non-partisan and independent Congressional Budget Office, the House and Senate bills will actually drive up heath care costs. The Congressional Budget Office also says that the Democrats' bill will significantly increase our nation's deficit.
"Take a minute to think about that.
"The Democrats are trying to rush a bill through the process that will actually make our nation's finances sicker without saving you money. The American people are growing increasingly concerned about out of control spending in Washington that's leaving us with trillions of dollars of debt.
"These bills also raid Medicare. This will result in cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from the elderly to create new government programs. Savings from Medicare should only be used to strengthen Medicare.
"The bills would expand comparative effectiveness research that would be used to limit or deny care based on age or disability of patients. Republican amendments in the HELP Committee would have protected Americans by prohibiting the rationing of their health care. The Democrats showed their true intent by voting every amendment down and leaving these unacceptable provisions in the bill. This intrusion of a Washington bureaucrat in the relationship between a doctor and a patient is not the kind of reform that Americans are seeking.
"People across America are telling Congress that current health care bills are the wrong approach and that there should be a course correction on health care reform. They've said we need to scrap these flawed bills and take the time to develop the real solutions that the American people want and need.
"We need to enact common sense reform that will actually cut costs.
"More and better choices of competing health plans should be available, so you can find the plan that meets your needs at a price you can afford.
"It's important that we help small businesses provide affordable coverage for their workers. One way to do this is to give small businesses the power to band together across the country and use their combined negotiating power to find quality, affordable insurance plans.
"We should also reform our current tax system, which drives up costs and makes it difficult for individuals to purchase insurance on their own. Everyone should get a health care tax advantage or no one should.
"We need to reform our flawed medical liability system and eliminate junk lawsuits against doctors and hospitals. Unnecessary lawsuits cause extra costs and drive up health care costs.
"We need to incentivize healthy lifestyle and push for a greater awareness of the importance of prevention rather than increasing sick care.
"And, we need to provide patients with more and better information about the price and quality of their health care services, so they can make the right choices for their families.
"America is a country of choices. We're a nation of people who want the ability to choose what will best fit our families' needs and it should be that way with health care too. These are the kinds of health care reforms that the American people want to see, and that's the kind of change I hear that people want as I travel across Wyoming. A government monopoly just doesn't serve us best.
"I hope the President and the Democratic-controlled Congress will reject the go-it-alone path that they are currently on. If they do, we'll have a chance to truly work on a real bill that will address those critical issues. Then we can bring about the reform necessary to decrease health care costs and increase access to affordable, quality health care for all Americans.
"Thank you."

Enzi has already made it clear that he sees his job as being to weaken, delay, or ideally kill health care reform. So, why do we care what he thinks? Yeah, "Gang of Six" I know, but I think that little group has pretty well dithered themselves into irrelevance.

This is a good thing! With Enzi and Grassley making it crystal clear that their mission is to kill healthcare reform, Baucus will have to admit that the "Gang of Six" is a dismal failure.
Kent Conrad's smug "we'll be done when we're done" pronouncements are even more irrelevant. In fact, I think Conrad's posturing as the healthcare reform kingmaker has hurt him badly. It clear that he was either being played or he never wanted real reform. Bad in either case.

Can anyone tell me why we should worry one bit about whatever Enzi says about anything. Obviously he cares not one bit about the struggle parents have when they cannot get medical care for their children. So I say to Enzi, a fellow Republican by the way, forget you. I care deeply about health care for all because it is the Godly, christian thing to do. In fact, God evaluates our life on earth by the standard of what we do for the less fortunate, the down trodden and those who cannot help themselves. That is known as practical Christianity. Any other kind is as useless as can be and only tends to lead the practitioner of that brand straight to damnation.

I think the appropriate response for the Dems is just a quick "if you cared so much about the man and his politics you should have taken the opportunity to work with him while he was alive" and let it go at that.
These stuffed shirts need to quit blathering on. If there is a recent relevant statement Kennedy made, quote it. Otherwise, get on with your work. This whole "what Kennedy would have wanted..." "what Kennedy would have done..." feels a lot like, "we are on the side of justice, god wants us to win this war" with both sides claiming intimate knowledge.
The correct approach isn't to exploit the death better than the other side, it's to point out how inappropriately they are acting. These people need to quit stupid and childish games, posing for the cameras. They need to start doing their jobs.

Republicans are not doing a good job on anything. They've been losing battle after battle. They lost the Franken battle and the Sotomajor battle. They'll lose on health care, because it's clear to the country that they haven't bargained in good faith.
If President Obama had resorted to the same tactic as Republicans, it wouldn't be so clear and reconcilation would be a harder sell.

Of 197 amendments made to the HELP bill 161 were Republican and 36 were made by Democrats. Enzi is a baldfaced liar.

Who can dispute any of the objectives Enzi lays out. Why does he think he is absolved from actually developing fair proposals to implement them? The Republican bills and amendments are clearly so one-sided and partisan that no reasonable person could accept them, particularly as they relate that great Republican bugaboo, tort reform. All the Republicans want to to is eliminate by fiat the ability for someone to seek redress - to establish a special category of person or entity which can't be touched. The world tried that three centuries ago. It's called aristocracy and it always ends badly.

Recall that Enzi's PAC had the largest contributions of any senator from the health insurance industry, and you can understand the why of his comments.
They're shooting so wildly now, it makes me think they don't think they have a chance of really stopping this...

According to official 2008 census estimates, 532,668 people live in Wyoming.
At the same time and by the same measure, 591,833 reside in the District of Columbia.
Yet one of Wyoming's two Senators is a member of the powerful "Gang of Six". Our Nation's Capital has no Senators at all.
Democrats control the Senate. Democrats control the House. Its time to put the District of Columbia on the political map.

BIG almost full page ad in our local paper. "Health care reform will be a government takover"
OVER STAMPED with a huge FALSE.
Ad by AARP! Want people to stop paying attention to the myths the insurance companies and pharma are putting out and get behind universal coverage, as a right not a privilege for the rich.
I am shocked, actually, I thought AARP was almost bought by INS/Pharma.. all I get are ads to buy stuff. GOOD ON THEM
(PS. Retired MD, and they are correct!)

I don't recall Enzi and the Repubs asking if we could afford the Iraq war before we invaded. I don't recall Enzi and gang asking if we could afford the Bush tax cuts for the rich before they slashed the tax rate for the rich & super rich. So why are Enzi, Hatch, and the entire Republican Party of religious fanatics demanding health care costs be solved BEFORE we provide health care to the destitute, poor, and disadvantaged? Are the Repubs the party of religion or religion of selection....in other words, if you have money, you are selected for the Republican Party and the benefits that go with it.
The gang of 6 represent less than 3% of the US population. The gang of 6 does NOT represent any of the Top 10 populous states. The gang of 6 consists of 3 republicans and 3 dems who look like republicans - why did Baucus and the dems give away their majority advantage in the finance committee?
Did the Senate Finance Committee approve the Iraq war before Bush and the congress moved to invade?
It is amazing - 50 million are without health care and another 150 million have inadequate health care coverage.
Obama better start to lead - he was elected on few key items in his platform. A primary one was to offer health care to all Americans just like the plan that he and the congress have for themselves.
If Enzi says we can't afford a public plan, does this mean we can't afford the plan that he and all of his senate collegues are enjoying today. They have one heck of a health care plan for themselves.
A clear majority of Americans want health care reform and a public option - they need to be smart enough to NOT accept the Enzi and Republican FUD (fear, uncertainty, deception). The people need to rise up....because Obama hasn't shown a great deal of bravery yet.
The time is now.....phone, e-mail, and hound your senators and reps.

Enzi pretty much stayed under the radar until the death of Wyoming's senior senator Craig Thomas, a member of the Finance Committee, in June 2007. As senior senator, former shoe salesman Enzi is more exposed for his efforts at hauling water for coal companies, Blue Shield and the soda ash lobby. Worse still, his campaign for reelection campaign next year is the first where he is likely to be called out for his unholy allegiances.
