GOP Congressman Jokes: Dems "Almost Got Lynched"
Here's another way for Republicans to handle the disruptions at Democratic town hall events: Joke about lynching.
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) held a town hall of his own two days ago, and here's what he said:
"This particular meeting, in a way is a little bit unique," said Akin. "Different people from Washington, DC, have come back to their districts and have town hall meetings, and they almost got lynched."
The audience then broke out into laughter and applause.
"I would assume you're not approving lynchings, because we don't want to do that," Akin said, putting his hand to his neck in imitation of choking, which got audience laughing some more. "But the point is, people are really upset at some of this legislation, and with very good reason they were upset."

The audience then broke out into laughter and applause.
Yep, that's their base.
Wonder if the "liberal" media will cover this one?

You don't have anything to hide becasue you don't have anything to contribute. Just a bunch of uninformed hicks from Mizzou. I am sure Harry Truman would be so proud. Almost as proud as their current favorite son, Rush Limbaugh.

Hey now, that's not necessary! First, Mizzou is a university (and a damn good one), not just a nickname for the state. And yeah, we may have managed to go for McCain by a couple thousand votes this last time (first time in a century we went for the loser) but since one (soon both) of our senators and all but one of our statewide officeholders are Democrats, maybe we could skip the "all Missourians are Deliverance banjo players" shtick?

Akins is the face of modern day lynching. A know-nothing Christian fundamentalist who blasphemes a decent religion by his hate.

Just called Akin's office and told them that a Senator should be held to a higher standard of sensitivity when it comes engaging in civil discourse. They replied that the liberal media is taking the comment "out-of-context." In case anyone is interested, here is their contact information.

"Out-of-context"?
He's on freakin' video. We've got context and nuance!
Akin has provided an opposition face to going beyond shouting and disruption.

On behalf of progressive Missourians I humbly apologize for this moron. We're not all wingnut hoosiers and every time Akin or his cohorts makes some asshat remark, we truly cringe. He is pretty firmly lodged in his district--but his Democratic challenger was pretty lame.

I used to live in Akin's district, and sadly I am afraid that his is a very safe seat. This sort of buffoonery plays very well in Missouri's second. As regards the democrat we ran against him last time, "lame" does not begin to describe Bill Haas. I cannot imagine what the democrats of the second district were thinking in nominating him (he does not even live in the second district). The only thing I can figure is just that there are so few democrats in the 2nd district that Haas was actually nominated by a bunch of mischief-making Republicans who opted to vote in the democratic primary just to make things more amusing (Haas is at least amusing).

For those that have never been there (I was raised in St. Louis and spent mucho time in rural areas), the area between St. Louis and Kaycee can be RED.NECK.
Not sure of his district but don't be surprised to find more of this there. Sorry Harry.

I do not know if you could describe Akin's district as "between St Louis and KC." Missouri's 2nd is very much part of the greater St Louis metro area. None of his district extends beyond the St Louis metro area into the rural parts of the state. He represents St Charles county and western/southern St Louis county. This area is a mix of affluent suburbs and working class suburbs. I used to live in that district, and my neighbors were lovely people but totally unhinged when it came to matters political. Akin is the perfect candidate to represent such a district and it will be pointless to complain that he is acting obnoxiously or recklessly because that is precisely what his constituents want him to do.
I will say this for him, however; he is one of the few cheerleaders for the Iraq war who actually had a child serving in Iraq. That does not change the fact, however, that he is a complete wacko.

Thanks for the clarification and personal info.
My comment was directed to the tendency of the rural voters to not be exactly "progressive". Sorry to hear that his more urban district doesn't seem to be a heckuva lot better.
Sounds similar to perhaps the St. Charles exurbia where McPalin had their first rollout/freak show.

Exactly. It is precisely the same constituency showing up to Akin's town hall meetings as was showing up to the Palin rallies in New Town. Nice people, but crazy as loons as soon as they turn their attention to politics.

He backed off this week, though he and other critics continued to treat Cash for Clunkers like swine flu with a steering wheel.
They hate it, many of these Republicans, because it’s a huge hit. It’s working as planned, and this cannot stand. America must fail in order for President Obama to fail. Don’t be surprised if the tea party goons now being dispatched to shout down town hall forums on health care start showing up at your car dealers, megaphones in hand

Of course, the way not to get "lynched" is to not even have a town hall. My congresswoman (R-TX Kay Granger) will do a "Tele" (phone) townhall over the August Break. And only one.
Not doing one in public. She will have a "one-on-one" with you if you schedule it and she can fit it in.
When I asked her staff why they were not doing a real town hall over August about Healthcare, they stated the Congresswoman had contacted many people already and had a "good sense" of how the people in her district felt.
So a traditional town hall meeting was not needed.
The Tele town hall and the one-on-ones she was scheduling were good enough.
Many of us were prepared to go to the town hall (if she'd had one) and "give" as good as was being given. She's smart. Why put yourself out there if you don't have too?
August 6, 2009 10:26 AM | Reply | Permalink
My rep., Darryl Issa (R-CA), also did a tele. It was a "spontaneous" one that happened at the moment he called which was right in the middle of fixing dinner. Not only that, the number he called from showed up as private caller, or unknown, or one of those non-attributed numbers on caller ID.
Now there's courage and determination!

While I don't know so for a fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a typical Republican meeting - open to True Believers only, show your voter registration card to get in.

And that would have turned the event into a riot, which is exactly what you want. We're not stupid enough to take the bait. Better to sit back and watch you self-destruct. Patience has its' own rewards. I suspect the time for bipartisanship has ended and the health care package will get passed without any repuglican getting an single word in it. It will be a totally Democrat package.

This Mizzou white trash would be pushing aside others to sign up first for a less expensive gov't health care program.
They will be the first on line to get into the program, and they won't care or remember that Akin voted against it.

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Lyrics by Lewis Allen. Sung by the likes of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.

The right-wing Republicans are revealing their true thuggish, nazi-like character.
They are using tactics they are right out of Goebbels playbook. These include infiltrating and disrupting opponents meetings with provocateurs who threaten and intimidate those gathered and cause enough chaos as to render the meeting pointless, thereby stifling their opponents message and ability to function.
They have also ramped up their usual disinformation propoganda campaign to include everything from the birthers to health care reform killing Grandma.
All Americans should be alarmed when these tactics are embraced by one of the two principal political parties in the U.S. The Democrats seem to be content to issue milquetoast statements by Harry Reid. They had had better wake up.

I just called Todd Akin's DC office and tried to connect the dots for the woman who snippily told me that Akin wasn't "joking" when he was referencing lynching in his town hall talk. I tried to show her how dangerous this rhetoric is and now his fellow congressman Brad Miller can't even have a town hall due to death threats. She listened politely then had the nerve to say "bless you and have a good day." "Bless you"?! ugh...these people are nuts.

Everyday we are learning more and more about the calaber of people we have in Congress. The ignorance and lack of respect for the Congress in which they serve demonstrates a shameful lack of uderstanding in the least. They represent the intellectual dregs of our society; white supremacists, undereducated, people angry at their inability to acheive. I noticed a lot of people socicial security and medicare age raging at these functions. They are so ignorant, they can't make the connection between SS and MC as being government programs. Those younger have not even considered that healthcare cost increases far outpace any other service and that insurance probably does not even begin to cover what they think it will when they need it. They have never been a victim of their insurance company. They are the ones that believe the lies and propaganda hype from Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. These two lying cretins are filthy rich and care nothing about the plight of their listeners, but only their own status in the media. The ragers at these townhalls are being used by the industry and their stupidy should be an embarrassment to them, but sadly, their intellect boarders on retardation and they have no clue they are simply pawns being used by the healtcare corporations. They are the ones who will be hurt the most if real healthcare reform fails and there is no public option. The GOP knows that there is never a shortage of truly ignorant people that can be rounded up for GOP purposes. It is their uninformed base that they use time and again. No wonder the Party is shrinking. Young people and people with higher educations are wise to the GOP.
