'Grassroots Protester' Actually GOP Official

Here's a fun example of astroturfing in its purest form: A woman attending a town hall event for Rep. Steve Kagen (D-WI), and--while loudly raising objections to the Democrats' health care reform proposal--insisting she's just a regular concerned citizen. Except, she's actually a GOP official.

Heather Blish was vice-chairman of the Kewaunee County GOP until 2008. She actually worked for Kagen's opponent, and, according to her own resume, is affiliated with the Republican National Committee.

Astroturfers indeed! Lying liars and the lies they tell.

user-pic

There are only two types of people left in the Republican Party: (1) certifiable wingnuts, and (2) paid staffers.

user-pic

I've been sayin' it a long time, Republicans are just regular, everyday folks.

user-pic

Journalism! Nice job, dude in Wisconsin. Isn't it great how GOP folks use their children as props? Also.

user-pic

Amazing! I almost didn't recognize it.

user-pic

Yeah, real journalism. I like the way he ended it:
"In your corner. ..." For more straight talk, Steven Pearlstein charges Repugs as "political terrorists":
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/06/AR2009080603854.html

user-pic

And "right" you are Decider! *snarks*

user-pic

LOL. And how many people did this lady bus in, or was she a private citizen speaking her mind? God forbid she have an opinion of her own.
At least she wasn't a plant in the audience asking prepared questions to the "spontaneous" candidates. I swear, you people are so hypocritical, it's a caution.

user-pic

aah shooter242 once again your brilliant insights shine through.

user-pic

Come on - admit you like slapping shoot-himself-in-the-foot242 all around the place. He ran away from the corporate welfare spanking I gave him on the last post.

user-pic

shooter242:

At least she wasn't a plant in the audience asking prepared questions

No Republicans ever do that, am I on target shooter? Ha Ha, except Republican Presidents!!

Does everyone remember the homosexual 'escort service' stud, otherwise known as a gay prostitute, Jeff Gannon, who got to carry White House press passes and asked softball questions when incoming ordnance was too hot for George Dubya during his few and far between press conferences? The guy was a plant with no journalistic experience.

Now that was democracy in action, Republican style!

user-pic

Ah yes, but he was performing a service to Ken Mehlman after hours. Bush needed to keep Mehlman happy so he let him have his boy toy stud muffin.

user-pic

I understand the point you are trying to make - seriously. However, in this case you are just constructing a straw man.

The point here isn't that the woman is faking it, its that her roll in the RNC compels her to be there. Put it another way, if I were asked by my employer to attend a conference, even if I wanted to be there, my motivation to attend was primarily based on my employers wishes. Now, when we report the attendance numbers of the conference, would it not be disingenuous to shout out 'Look at all the ordinary people that attended this conference! Everybody is interested in this stuff!'? Of course it would. A more factual statement would be 'Lots of companies sent their employees here.' Same thing with this faux outrage. Lots of companies (RNC, for example) are sending their people and telling them to act pissed off.

The polls tell us that 3 out of 10 people are dead set against the governments plans to overhaul health insurance. If a town-hall has 100 people in a 50/50 district, and 60 people show up to yell and scream, would that be anomalous?

user-pic
The point here isn't that the woman is faking it, its that her roll in the RNC compels her to be there. Put it another way, if I were asked by my employer to attend a conference,...
I see. And you know she was ordered there by the Republican "Mr. Big", how exactly? Or is that just a convenient assumption on your part? At that moment she may be exactly what she professed to be. But it doesn't matter either way. She's still entitled to speak. She apparently didn't shout or interrupt.

Let's cut to the chase. Are you saying she should have disclosed her previous work experience, or just not be allowed to speak at all?
If it's the first, I'm a firm believer in disclosure, especially for talking heads on the political shows. Especially Democrats and the media.
The second is obviously unconstitutional, which leaves us with the potential criticism that she misrepresented herself and her true nature. Heh.

I'll tell you what, if you want to figure out how to enforce honesty in the political process, be my guest. Let's see how far you get.
Meanwhile any moralizing would be hypocritical to say the least. And with that gone, there's nothing left to say.

user-pic

Yes, Shooter, stop talking because you cannot convince anyone else except your self that she did NOT misrepresent herself. With a microphone n her face she says she was not been with the party in two years, but her internet site has her as a member in 2008. It's only 2009, one year later.

The proposition that "in th emoment" she was just a typical person is absurd. She has the right to speak, but not to expect others to ignore her activities for several years. She wasn't running the phone bank. She had an official position, and it was with the RNC, not a local GOP Breakfast Club.

Can you understand why people are irritated with your ridiculous efforts to skirt the facts?

user-pic

why did she lie?

user-pic

habit

user-pic

I'm really glad you put this line in there:

If it's the first, I'm a firm believer in disclosure, especially for talking heads on the political shows. Especially Democrats and the media.

That pretty much says it all. You're firmly against all manner of dirty tricks...when employed by Democrats and "the media." When Republicans pull them, you see no problem at all...because "they learned it from Democrats."

Even if your excuse were true, your position would still be ridiculous. As it happens, it's not even close; Democrats have never in history pursued mob disruption on this scale (and your Code Pink example isn't even close). Nor have we:

1.Robocalled voters falsely claiming our (intraparty!) opponent had a mixed-race illegitimate child.
2.Ginned up a completely false and discredited account of the wartime record of our highly-decorated opponent in order to cover for our candidate having dodged the draft.
3.Hired a fake reporter (and real male stripper) and given him fake press credentials and access to the White House press room so he could toss softball questions at our President.
4.Faked every "town hall" and rally for 8 years by ensuring that only our side was allowed to attend.
5.Systematically challenged ballots at polling places, using racial profiling to attempt to throw out our opponents votes.
6.Repeatedly murdered doctors for performing legal procedures we feel should be illegal.
7.Outed an American covert operative, ruining untold overseas operations and threatening our national security, to exact political revenge against the operative's spouse.
8.Regularly called our opponents un-American, Godless, the Anti-Christ, terrorist, Muslim (as an epithet!), or any of a host of racial slurs.
9.Sent out emails with such wonderfully racist jokes as the White House watermelon patch. Then apologized "that it offended some people."
10.Ruined the entire global economy twice, largely the same way, in just 80 years.

Seriously now. Go ahead and tell us that they learned all this stuff from the Democrats. Atwater's rolling in his grave listening to you minimize his achievements...

user-pic

Wow, hunter, great list. Depressing one, too -- depressing especially since it enumerates only some of the worst behavior.

I'm sure shooter has an explanation.

Shooter?

user-pic

Apparently someone gave you a new word of the day since you are desperately trying to get attention. Of course you don't understand what it means. Here is a clue, sport: Shrub would only take screened questions at *every* public event that he held. In fact, his entire audience was screened to avoid any signs of disagreement. And he was detoured around any negative protests or signs wherever he went. But don't let facts get in your way.

user-pic

I guess they forgot to screen this guy.

user-pic

There, there, shooter. It can get tiring struggling against reality all the time. I recommend a nice vacation. Perhaps you could shoot a friend in the face (like the ex-Dark Lord) or hunt small animals (like Mitt Romney).

user-pic

So, why does a dog lick his own butt so much?

user-pic

That's easy: because he can.

user-pic

And that's exactly the same reason republicans lie.

user-pic

No, she's just you're run of the mill liar.
Did you watch the clip, clown? She says she's not affiliated with any party!

user-pic

"Your" typical, run-of-the-mill liar. Sorry.

user-pic

Why did she lie?

user-pic

You lost in 2008. Elections have consequences. Our side knows that better than anyone after 8 years of Bush. It is time your side learns that. This is about soure grapes activism, not grass roots activism. This particular woman embodies that fact perfectly. Nice dog though. Looks just like my little Daisey.

user-pic

Actually, she's the definition of a plant. And a liar at that. Get off the internet until your IQ rises into the positives, please.

user-pic

So why can't the folks who work for the parent networks do reporting like this guy did? I mean, they have a lot more resources and staff, researchers, etc. Of course, they don't even need their resources to do what this guy did. He got the woman's name, interviewed her, then went back to the office and typed her name into Google and got her LinkedIn page (second result when I did it). Easy.

user-pic

ogliberal,

So why can't the folks who work for the parent networks do reporting like this guy did?

I know! I know! It's because the cable and network news desks do not operate in the broader public interest, but rather in the interests of the private shareholders of their parent companies and whose dividends depend on the advertising revenues generated by the same industry that is bankrolling the town hall disruptions.

user-pic

The network news stations all have astroturf in their own back yards.

user-pic

The first Google result for her is her Twitter page. I'm blogged from viewing Twitter at work so I can only see the Google cache version, which is dated. But there's a Tea Party post in there and one of the people she follows is a guy named Todd Lohenry. His LinkedIn page reads like Blish's but he appears to be a bit higher up in the local GOP. He has a blog called, "The Right Side of Wisconsin".

user-pic
In December 2004, FreedomWorks employee Sandra Jacques was introduced at a White House economic conference as a "single mom" from Iowa who supported the Bush administration's Social Security privatization plan. According to White House budget director, Jacques was was an example of how Bush promotes his agenda with testimonials from "regular folks." As the New York Times pointed out, however, "Ms. Jaques is not any random single mother. She is the Iowa state director of a conservative advocacy group."
user-pic

Isn't it about time for the respected senior Republican leaders to make the point that this is not how civic discussions are held in America?

Since I used the term, "respected senior Republican leader" I can actually only think of one who might be able to pull this off:

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, she has the respect, she was GOP officeholder, and she's very much associated with the civics education effort.

Just a thought, but the madness has to stop before there is unrecoverable violence.

Regards.

user-pic

Yes, "respected senior Republican leaders" seem to be going the way of the carrier pigeon and the dodo bird.

user-pic

Well, yes, except that Justice O'Connor is viewed as a liberal, activist judge by the current Republican rump.

user-pic

I said the same thing until I realized there aren't any left apparently and the ones in Congress are too afraid they will lose their jobs if they do.

It is pathetic isn't it.

user-pic

Isn't this straight out of Hitler's playbook?

user-pic

We shoud lose the Hitler reference. Given the association with the Holocaust, this abhorrent bahvior pales in comparison. But it is certainly a fascist behavior, and it resembles the Bolshevik Revolutionaries. These people are enamored with comparing themselves to patriots, i.e. revolutionaries.

user-pic

The whole thing is straight out of Marx's playbook. Groucho Marx, I mean.

user-pic

The point isn't that the woman drove there on her own and expressed opinions, nor even that she may or may not be responding to requests from GOP higher-ups.

The point is that she lied on television about it. Just came right out and said "I'm not affiliated with the Republican party." Why would she do that if she didn't think it was in her interest to do so? Apparently it was in her interests to appear to be someone she isn't.

The point is, if you hang your hat on a person, party or ideology that must tell breathtaking lies to make its point, you HAVE no point. You are not more "patriotic" than others, you are not "fighting for freedom" and you are not "just an ordinary mom."

You are, in fact, either dumb as a post and being take for a ride, or you are just as cynical and venal as the ones doing the lying.

user-pic

Please stop insulting posts, OK?

user-pic

Nice Job Wisconsin reporter dude! These asshats will sink themselves. The bullshit looks worse and stinks more when held up to the light.

user-pic

Heather Blish appears to have a blog entitled "The Right Side of Wisconsin" containing 2 (count 'em, two) entries:

http://heatherblish.rightsideofwisconsin.com/author/heatherblish/

user-pic

It's says a lot when you are embarrassed to admit what party you are affiliated with.

user-pic

I'm at a loss when I see these people and their performances.

I watched the video of the guy in Pueblo, CO likening the reform efforts to Hitler. Aren't the "protesters" acting like the Nazi's did on the way to Hitler's taking power? As a Jew, and not a very good one, it makes me sick to hear them appropriate such a horrible, historical event to their cause . . .

Fine, disagree. Hell, I'm not sure what we should do. But, they are so thugish, and manipulative. And way Scary, I mean, jezuz, these people are so eager to hate and be angry. And do so happily.
Their faux sense of victimization is comical if it weren't possibly deadly.

I'm just venting, confused and angry myself about this. And Obama and his vaunted political team need to get a handle on it. I know, I know, he has a day job. But this is part of that job. Like a teacher doing lesson plans at home at night.

He needs to bring his A game and not make stupid comments that allow a co opted news media to waste about 45 news cycles to a beer summit. And he drinks Bud Light? That alone gives me pause.

Thanks for listening.

user-pic

Does she have a right to speak her mind? Yes. But standing up saying she is not affiliated with any party is like last year's president of the union standing up and saying he's not with any union. She was dishonest and disingenuous in her motives. A GOP plant.

user-pic

Go to these meetings with your cell phone or camera. Photograph each and every one of these thugs or "activists". Put all the photos out on the internet. Make it like a game. Find out who each one is. Etc. Expose them all!

user-pic

wow, good job local news, doing something that a lot of the 24/7 news networks have been refusing to do.

user-pic

Send this to the Cable "News" Outlets along with your Local News stations.

How many more are like this women and really working for some Republican in Congress?

user-pic

What kind of sewage do these people drink?
Has anyone bothered to ask?
Last year universal health care was almost the most important issue with all u.s. people.
How do some leftover med-industry influenced pro big pharma people and loony party related crack heads or worse get any airtime?
Who believes any of this?
Sad when u.s is the only western country that lets people die.
We now lead in nothing but fraud.
Hope they all don't take the same deception drugs as dickman.

user-pic

All the liberal blogs need to post this woman's face on their front page through Monday. Make her known as a liar and a GOP plant.
Since she brought up twice that she is a mother, what is she teaching her children about honesty?

user-pic

This is why I love blogs. I knew it was only a matter of time before boggers and readers of blogs started identifying these "ordinary citizens", or noticed the same faces appearing again and again.

As to the bulk of the mobs, does anybody have an idea how the anti-healthcare bunch is getting real ordinary people so bent out of shape? I read an interpretation of the bill that says it's about killing grandma or government control of all medical care, and laugh it off. These people seem to believe it whole-heartedly and react with rage. How does one deliver a patently false assertion such that it has such impact? Where do you find people who are so gullible? Is it just people who still trust printed material because for most of their lives it was pretty reliable? Are GOPers lieing to seniors, friends, and relatives who trust them? I could see seniors and busy people believing this crap if somebody they know and trust delivers the message and they don't have the time or inclination to check it out..

user-pic

It's because the lies speak to what these people deeply want to believe.

user-pic

Where did they find people so gullible? All around. Remember that, years later, close to half of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein had some connection to 9/11. Even Cheney had to admit that wasn't true (while, of course, denying that he ever claimed it was...).

user-pic

No one's a Republican any more, they are "Independent" or "Libertarian" even though they support all the Republican positions and get their talking points from Limbaugh and the RNC.

user-pic

Here in Washington State, most of them identified themselves as "G.O.P." in the voter's guide. Nothing like being proud of your team. is there?

user-pic

Family Values: definition: When it comes to making public appearances for your Republican political ambitions, your kids become a real VALUE for parading around.

user-pic

Come on, guys! It's not David Gregory's job to find stuff like this.

user-pic

Astonishing? You mean -- gasp! -- they play dirty??

user-pic

Effective use of the child as a prop, I wonder if it was hers.

user-pic

Play her off, Keyboard Cat!

By the way, I've been in the nerd biz for 20 years, and I've never heard of a "drawerist" before.

user-pic

From exaggeration to assassination...and everything between. Republicans play to win at any cost. It's time for the middle-class to put the gloves on!

user-pic

I knew these assholes would play dirty and deceptive, but I had no idea how bad it would get. And it will just keep getting worse. I hope the American people have become somewhat of the discerning public and can weed through the mass hysteria and sophomoric pranks thrust upon us by the rethuglican party.
