Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ)--co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus--says that the 60 House progressives who have committed to voting against a health care reform proposal if it does not include a public option are serious.

"If there is a slippage, it's minimal," Grijalva said.

A report in The Hill this morning warned that "the 60 signatures might be soft."

According to the report, the 60 "include lawmakers who have said they can accept health cooperatives and others who say they wouldn't vote against the House bill in the end."

Good for you! How many more petitions do I need to sign? How many more FAXES, letters and phone calls will it take to let these people know we mean business even if we don't carry weapons to prove our point?

Maybe as a form of protest, we should all wear those arrow-through-the-head thingies! That is what we will feel like if they deprive us of real health care reform.

I think it entirely possible that they'd better hold the line if they want to return to the legislature. It would be even better to see the number of hardliners rise like the sun in the morning.
Here's my link of the week, an article by Terhune and Epstein that will illustrate the monolithic effort the insurance industry is putting forward to crush their "opposition" - namely the tens of millions of uninsured Americans. Nothing like launching all out war against the disenfranchised and the sick. I've had it! PO is the line in the sand and the compromise to single payer which is what the wealthiest industrialized nation on earth to have.

Grijalva held a townhall yesterday where I currently live. I was unable to show up thanks to work, but plan to mail him my support once again. The local paper wrote up his visit, and I have to say I'm shocked that so far the comments are evenly split pro/negative. Usually any article about Grijalva devolves into an echo chamber of "dumb illegal Mexicans stealin' our money!"

This is what I don't get. Why do moderate Democrats believe that they can survive if they kill health care reform.

If health care reform fails, and people think Democrats can't govern, who do you think is going to get voted out? These so-called Blue Dogs, that's who. Nancy Pelosi isn't going to get voted out. Charlie Rangel isn't going to get voted out. These Democrats from these red state are going to get voted out.

They don't care. If they ever leave office (by choice or not) they'll have a cushy 7-figure K Street job waiting for them. Especially if they've been reliable industry lapdogs while in office.

If that man launched a primary challenge to Obie in '12, on the mustache alone, I would be a fool for Raul.

& the rest of you should be as well.

Thank you for being ever so clear and correct to draw the line in the sand House Progressives. I am committed to everything I can to de-throne any blue dog or conservadem in the Senate if they do not support a public option.
In my mind, there are only two possibilities for waht is going on politically, (1: Obama is willingly to spend some capital and draw every fucking republican out until they actually vote against health care reform so clearly the blame will rest on any politician who blocks it or (2: he has already dealt away the public option and wants to salvage anything he can so health care reform gets thru the Senate and he can then claim victory.
Obama is the ultimate communicator and speech giver so why are we dangling everyday on what the fuck is the message. Let's assume Obama is the most honest and ethical man to be President so why isn't he taking control and serving the people who elected him to office while the GOP Senators can go out and speak lies and utilize the most unethical talking points of fear and pandering. Obama still praises these GOP hacks as working hard for health care reform.
I don't see any other scenarios that explain this constant message battle w/in his White House and he inability to articulate his "line drawn in the sand". What do you think?

I contributed to the Act Blue - Standing Up for the Public Option page (it's close to $295,000 since Tuesday morning!) plus an extra 50 to my rep (Jim McDermott) who is one of the 60 standing strong. I also signed the petition set up by FireDogLake to let them know we expect them to stick to their word and I also contacted our WA senators to encourage them to support the public option. It's time to get busy and make some noise to counter the excessive attention being given to the radical right wing.

As the President said yesterday on C-SPAN . . .

He was addressing the Organizing For America Forum on Health Care.

"We're going to have to cut through a lot of nonsense out there -- a lot of absurd claims that have been made about about health insurance reform..."

I think that pretty much sums up dealing with the rhetoric that has come from the anti-reform crowd.

And then, speaking of individuals who have no insurance coverage, or coverage is not provided by their employers, or those who have lost coverage from unemployment there was this point the President made:

"One of the options we want to provide them is the public option... there has... this has been a confusion around... there's been a lot of confusion about this so let me just clarify. I think a public option is important... and let me explain why..."

You can view the the President's 40 minute presentaion C-SPAN video and watch and listen for yourself for his explanation here at my TPM Cafe blog. Please recommend it to keep on the TPM front page so more can watch it.

Don't rely on others when you can verify for yourself what is being said by the President.

Important Note: Don't overlook Obama's call to action... urging all "...supporters to act on their successes to date by engaging the public, dismissing rumors and misinformation, and telling the truth about proposed reforms."
