Maddow On Tea Baggers: "There Is A Script For This Stuff"

Watch Rachel Maddow's segment on the tea party/anti-health care reform protesters.

Gives you a pretty good sense of what these disruptions are like--what features they share in common. It's hard to know how many member town halls will be (or have been) similarly disrupted, but that's only one of the goals of the protesters. Another goal is to create a narrative in the media about the organic rise of a populist anti-reform backlash; and the jury's still out on whether that effort will succeed.

Excellent segment by Maddow. Another reason why you shouldn't talk while tea bagging.

user-pic

Ok, here is what I don't understand: People on the left try this disruption stuff all the time. The protests at the conventions, the Codepink protests during hearings, etc. The difference is that when the left protests, people aren't shy about using force to shut them down. Call the police, drag them from the room, etc.

Why not do the same to the right-wing nuts that are there just to disrupt?

user-pic

Because protestors on the left are just a bunch of DFHs, good-for-nothing know-it-alls with five grad degrees but no job other than acting obnoxious at political events. Protestors on the right are "real Americans" - the plumber, the mailperson, the construction worker, the cop...good, common, hard-working white folks - and their yelling and screaming is the true reflection of what "real America" thinks. Tossing out disruptive DFHs is done in the name of decorum and decency - their voices are so outside of the mainstream that they don't deserve to be heard. Shutting down the loudmouth wingnut wackos would be like burning the flag - it's just not American.

user-pic

Good point about lefty protestors.

The diff is that the MSM always coddles the wingers and bigots, and gets "outraged" about "offensive" lefties protesting a war or whatnot.

user-pic

Because people on the left are freaks who won't wear nice shoes and a suit, and who do nothing but sit in front of their cheeto-encrusted keyboard in their mother's basement.

Where you been, dude?

user-pic

and the jury's still out on whether that effort will succeed."

My guess is that we'll see a week or two of media fawning - ie, "real Americans speak out!" Then they'll start to realize that the folks "speaking out" are offering nothing constructive. YouTube videos of the goofballs will start to spread, many showing the protestors yelling about not only healthcare reform but socialism and white angsts and "where's the birth certificate". The elites in the media will then slowly begin to realize that these folks are the same goofballs who populate the birther movement, the same wackos who attend tea bagging parties. And then they'll change their narrative.

Will that happen in the next month? Let's hope so. Because my guess is that the cowardly Dems in congress will be frightened by these displays of anger, even if the folks yelling are only a small percentage of the total audiences at the events or even if these folks aren't even from the district. If the media backs up the "these are real Americans" BS, the congressfolks will feel justified in their fears. But if the media starts treating these folks for what they are - astroturf organized nuts - Dem congresspeople will feel more secure in blowing off these boobs and doing what is right when the votes come down in the Fall.

The media doing its job and Dem congressfolks growing a set of balls. It's a lot to hope for - maybe too much.

user-pic

Can the tea bagger's contain their real motives??? ie. racism, hatred, threats of violence.

My guess is not.

user-pic

I agree. At some point, if they keep getting encouragement from the media, someone is going to do something so stupid that even David Broder will realize what a bunch of crazies they are.

user-pic

Judging by the "Devil Doggett" poster seen in the video, the crazy has already been let out...

user-pic

I think that's a smart assessment.

For my part, I'm going to try and not be a spectator with all this stuff.

Sometimes I have a tendency to watch without participating. To blame the media, the democrats, the Republicans, the corporate elitists, heck the weather.

I have a tendency to say, "it figures, the MSM is despicable".

But I'm trying to rise up out of that sedentary uselessness and frustration and convert the energy into something that changes the way things are.

user-pic

This is a good point, but will the MSM do its job and pick up on it? This post also suggests to me another strategy -- why not make the town meetings even uglier ? Surely a few gutsy folks from the left could dress to "pass" as one of the "regular folks" and show up at the meetings to make them look worse . Make sure to bring up the birther thing and even emphasize it, shout about black helicopters, etc., the crazier the better and if you can derail the meeting from talking about health care or any serious issues at all , then do it. Especially if local or even better, national media are there to cover it. What about the Yes Men, people like that? There's a fine line; overdoing it could make it look fake. It might even stiffen the spines of some Dems rather than intimidate -- if the crowd was ugly enough to get the Senator/Representative really angry they could forget how scared they are and say screw it; I'm voting to piss these nuts off.

Far fetched, but maybe worth a try?

user-pic

Exactly right.

Rachel calls this what it is: hooliganism.

Under Bush, however, this would have been called under another name: "jail time."

user-pic

To be fair, the left has used disruption and "street tactics" in the past, though admittedly they at least had a rational leg to stand on when doing so.

user-pic

It's that rational leg, isn't it. Why are we always crippled by that leg? While others don't have a leg to stand on, we have the rational leg, yet it paralyzes us when it really should mobilize us.

When we have the only leg to stand on in a debate, why are we the most handicapped in the room?

Anyone?

user-pic

Because we're rational, and won't allow ourselves to draw huge sweeping conclusions that we know are nothing but B.S. Because we argue on the basis of facts, rather than emotion.

user-pic

Liberals want peace and will give away just about anything to achieve it. These people know that and disrupt these sessions to agitate people. So to achieve peace, liberals have to assuage the emotions of the agitator. It's a very dysfunctional dynamic, but very effective. Liberals cater to these abusers and hope they will end the abuse. Does it ever?

user-pic

One way to show this "movement" for what it is might be to expose them as outsiders. When it becomes clear that these people are being transported in from outside to disrupt, the narrative immediately changes. It's no longer an "organic movement" but one orchestrated from the outside. The next logical question is "by whom?". From there it's all downhill.

user-pic

"One way to show this 'movement' for what it is might be to expose them as outsiders."

I agree. But will the media do that and, if yes, when? All they would have to do is, say, visit TPM where they could obtain a bunch of evidence showing that this is just one big astroturf effort whose goal is to end, not engage in, debate. They could then do their own work, using the resources they have available to them which are much greater than TPM will ever have. Will they do that? It would mean that their narrative was influenced by a bunch of snot-nosed bloggers. That would be unacceptable to most of the beltway media elites - they only allow themselves to be influenced by GOP talking points and Drudge.

user-pic

Will they do that on their own? No. But they do love a good story. Someone with access needs to pitch it to them as an expose`.

user-pic

It's time for the left to get organized. No use waiting for the Dem Party to be of any use here.

Just dig in in your district and turn people out. When the right wing starts shutting people down and rile things up, be firm and try to cool things down.

Shame them with statements like "where were you raised -- a barn?"

And we need to get letters to the editor about this going in NOW.

user-pic

The first rule of these meetings is a declaration by anyone who wishes to have the floor to state the town in which they live and their zip code. Some will say where they live honestly and others will lie. It will easily make the imposters evident who cannot match a town and a zip code. Many who came, not knowing the town and zip code will be silent. It should also be demanded there be only one voice at a time. Cheerleaders for otehr speakers should be asked to leave.

user-pic

that's a good idea. Before you speak, state your name and place of residence.

user-pic

"The first rule of these meetings is a declaration by anyone who wishes to have the floor to state the town in which they live and their zip code."

I know at our town meetings, you have to state your name and address for the record. You're not prevented from speaking if you're not from the town - at least not in most cases - but it allows the audience and the elected officials to know where the folks speaking out are from. This is just standard procedure for all meetings - it's not about shutting down dissent or debate. They should do the same thing at these town halls - don't prevent non-residents from attending or even from speaking...but make them state where they live...and their name. (I'm sure there are repeat offenders - wingnuts who travel to multiple districts to attend these things) As Gregor noted, if they know this, many of the outsiders may actually choose to remain silent.

user-pic

They ran an orderly meeting yesterday in Indiana -- with these assholes in attendance. Read how at this dailykos diary:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/8/4/761608/-Tea-Baggers-FAIL-to-disrupt-Health-Care-meeting,-lessons-shared.

user-pic

Great ideas. They really put a lot of thought into it. I had come up with a few ideas about conducting these meetings that I thought would work and it looks like those people in Indiana have already proved that they would.

I was also thinking that you would need to lay out the ground rules before the speaker even got to the mic. Everyone should have an equal chance to ask a question and even make a statement, but not everyone attending would get to, so there would be a time limit on each of the questioners and people would have to raise their hands to be called on or stand in line at the audience microphone. Having the police there would be an important part. If anyone refuses to stick to the ground rules, by shouting out or speaking out of turn, they could be removed, depending upon how disruptive they become.

The important thing is that all sides get to speak and all sides get to be heard.

user-pic

You just need to keep reporting on these tactics, expose it as an astroturf campaign by corporate and insurance lobbyists who like the status quo because it makes them filthy rich.

Now that Reps and Senators know about this, it is less likely to rile them up. This was a trick early in the internet where the Parents Television Council banded together mass emailing cmapaigns. They'd see something on television and send out a mass email to their members and have them contact advertisers, stations etc and complain about something. Early on advertisers and stations thought "Bloody Hell, a lot of folks from all across America are pissed off, that must have went across the line" However eventually they caught on that it was a small group disguising themselves as a much bigger group.

This is what they're doing here as 3-4 folks can spread out and then yell and shout and make it look like they have the support of the vast majority in the room.

However as I mentioned above, now that these tactics have been exposed Reps and Senators need to give interviews to covering news stations to publicize the link to insurance lobbyists and the astroturf campaign. Don't let the local news cover it like it's grass roots - it needs to be exposed as to what it is.

What these guys want is nothing more than violence to break out though - they want the headlines "A Fight breaks out at local Rep's healthcare meeting" in order to rally their side more.

user-pic

Anyone keeping track of how many of these have happened? So far I count 6 over the last 5 days in NY, TX, CT and PY.

user-pic

Here's another thought on how to counter this crap: turn the light on them. Ask the people disrupting, "Where did you get the idea to act like this? Who told you how to disrupt Democracy?" Then start reading off that memo. After reading the memo, bring up who wrote it and who they work for. Then talk about what Freedomworks stands to gain from Insurance reform failing. Finally, wrap the whole thing up by turning the spotlight on the Teabagger's actions: "What you see here today is the desperation of an industry that doesn't want what's best for the American people, open and honest debate about health care. What you see here today are the tactics of intimidation and anti-democracy. What you see here today is shameful corporate malfeasance on a very personal level, one that attempts to pass itself off as your neighbor, as a concerned friend, as a person who shares common interest with you. Organizations like Freedomworks and the corporate interests they lobby for ought to be shown for what they are: Anti-Democracy."

blah blah blah yackety schmackety. I'm sure some speech writer out there could do a much better job of this than I have:P Basically, as many people seem to agree, it's important to show where these people are coming from and who told them to get out there. If the media won't come to TPM, they WILL come to these ridiculous shit-storms for ratings. Get the message out in the Town Halls. Video-tape them and post that stuff up on You Tube. Link it in your Facebook accounts, use MySpace, link to the videos through Twitter with @Freedomworks, @Teabaggers, @whoever is orchestrating this crap (or whatever Twitter account they're using) in there. The brighter a light shone on these people the better for proponents of honest debate and health care reform. The truth is they don't have the facts and they don't have the right, so let's show everybody that by letting them be who they are.

No need for counter-protests (that's what they're hoping for), no need for goon squads to shove them into the paddy wagons, just do some civic reporting and shine the light on them. If the mass media won't report it, get out there and flood every internet media spot there is. They'll get it eventually.

user-pic

I've been "lucky" enough to be exposed to FoxScreamoNews almost nonstop for several days now.

Since the first day of this disruptive behavior, multiple Fox shows have been gloriously playing & replaying clips of it. Naturally, always described as popular, spontaneous responses.

On one show (I forget which now) the first or second day, I also saw a brief interview with an explicitly identified Tea-Bag leader, on her group's infiltration of that first disrupted meeting.

Sweet, huh? The evidence has been there from the first.

BTW, today I saw Neal Cavuto defending the spontaneity against some hapless DNC rep ID'ing the disruptive activity. Cavuto lied, in other words-- he knew better. He badgered the guy, and then he cut him off. The brownshirts live. The beat goes on.

user-pic

Yes, there is a script for this stuff: the Brownshirts of Nazi Germany. That point should be made at every town hall.

I can't help but notice the advanced age of many of these "citizen protestors". To wit: they already have "socialized health care." Someone needs to start calling them out on it at every town hall. Demand that they give up their Medicare or admit they're hypocrits.

We also need to start injecting a dose of old-fashioned shame into the proceedings, such as: "Why do you have such little respect for the parents who raised you that you would act this way in public and suggest to everyone watching that they didn't teach you any manners?"

Last but not least: have security on hand, and lay out the ground rules from the beginning. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion when it's their turn to speak. Those who refuse to respect the rights of others to be heard or who are more intent on disruption will forfeit their right to be heard and will be removed, full stop. Not arrested, just ejected. That's a far cry from the tactics used by Bush, where dissenting voices were pre-screened out, and if a few managed to slip through, were brutalized and arrested. Free speech is a right. Holding others hostage to witnessing you behaving like a 4 year old throwing a tantrum is not. Behave like an adult, or go sit at the children's table.
