In a huddle with progressives at Netroots Nation, Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY)--an outspoken Democrat from a conservative, upstate district--says Sen. Chuck Grassley's comments about end-of-life care constitute "an act of treason."
Grassley told a crowd of health care reform skeptics they were right to be concerned that, under Democratic health care legislation, the government would "pull the plug on grandma." Dishonest? Yes. But treason?
Now, on the one hand, Massa is a former military officer, and so should know perfectly well what is treason and what isn't. But he's also a former Republican, and apparently hasn't yet lost the "when in doubt, accuse of treason" reflex.
As a Democrat--and serving in a Republican-leaning district--Massa has eclectic views. He broke with the GOP over the Iraq war and plans to vote for single payer health care. But he opposes the health care plans the administration supports on cost grounds, and supported closing the southern border after the swine flu outbreak was traced to Mexico.

Everytime some loudmouth politician denounces policy disagreement as "treason," they prove the Founders knew what they were doing. Just because the Right loves to do it, doesn't mean we should. In fact, it's another reason we shouldn't.

Still, there's something rather satisfying about having the tables turned on them and watching them on the receiving end of accusations that they're treasonous and unpatriotic.
It is, of course, worrisome to think of that kind of invective being adopted for use by Democrats.
Still, it's sweet, I won't lie.

Rep. Massa is my representative and I proudly voted for him over Bush loving Randy Kuhl. This is his first term and I can forgive his treason remark. From the clip it sounds like he was using a lot of military metaphors. I am amazed he was even elected in my district--a district where, when I wore my Obama shirt to the grocery store I received a lecture about socialism. Rep. Massa is passionate about healthcare reform. Bless him for doing the research and voting for what he believes will be good for the people of his district.

falsely accusing someone of treason is treason!!!
LOL
You know, the other side's arguments are illogical, false and hyperbolic; can't our side do better than that? Seriously.

I think it more likely that Massa meant "treason against the negotiating group." In other words, they let Grassley have a seat at the table, trusting that he would work to modify the bill in a way that would get his support, and he betrayed their trust.
The more important point is that Josh needs to stop saying "whacked." The term is "wack."

I won't defend Massa's comments, as they are reckless. But his position on healthcare is mischaracterized here. I heard him on a local talk show and he was very clear that the opposes the current house bill in favor of full single-payer, not on cost grounds. He believes the house bill is watered down and does not include enough reform.

He did say at the outset that he opposed the House bill on cost grounds, which seems odd, in that single-payer, which he adamantly supports, would be super expensive. I haven't heard him say that recently. I'm guessing that he won't be calling Grassley a traitor any more either.
His heart and head are definitely in the right place IMHO and he probably just needs a good night's sleep. He works his ass off.

Well, I would argue that an elected Senator who swore an oath to preserve and defend the Constitution bragging about how he has been lying and bargaining in bad faith and stalling in order to forestall and defeat health care reform when 18,000 people die each year for lack of insurance might not be treason, but it is premeditated mass murder.
Senator Grassley was paid 1.27 million by the health and insurance industry. The result is the death of 18,000 Americans a year. Murder for hire, is what it is.
