Further details have emerged on Chris Christie's traffic stop in 2005, New Jersey 101.5 FM reports.

In 2005, Christie was pulled over for speeding in Lambertville, New Jersey, and was cited for speeding and for driving in an unregistered, uninsured vehicle. The car belonged to Christie's wife, but the registration had expired about two months before.

Lambertville police director Bruce Coccuzza told the radio station that Christie's position as a U.S. attorney was discussed: "He identified himself." Christie's campaign says the candidate does not recall how it came up.

In the car with Christie, according to his campaign and the local police director, were his wife, children, and Michele Brown -- the friend and then-subordinate of Christie's in the U.S. Attorney's office, who has recently resigned because of an undisclosed $46,000 loan that Christie extended to her in 2007. The group was on its way to a football game that night at Christie's alma mater, the University of Delaware.

Normally, it is a strict policy in New Jersey to tow an unregistered car -- and in fact, a tow truck did arrive at the scene, according to the campaign. However, Christie was ultimately allowed to drive home. Coccuzza told the radio station: "From what I recollect I think she (the officer) even said at the time, 'If wasn't for the fact that you had a car full of children this car would be towed.'"

The tickets were marked "NO DEAL," which is traditionally used by police when they feel a driver behaved badly, and that the judge should not go easy in the case. Christie eventually paid a $250 fine, and the registration ticket was dismissed after he produced proper documentation -- though again, Christie's campaign has conceded that the car's registration was expired at the time.

Phone calls to the Coccuzza for further clarification were not returned, and we were later told he was not taking any more calls for the day.

Sadly, you're wrong this time. "customarily towed" is not even close. I'm nobody and I have been caught with expired registration and been given a ticket but not towed at least three times in 20 years. That NO DEAL thing is new. He must have really pissed the cop off.I hope he learned his lesson about speeding in Lambertville. It's dangerous. Jessica Savitch died near there.

I would appreciate it if everyone would stop using this phrase in unambiguous contexts. I much prefer to interpret it as a qualified acceptance ("it's okay if you come to the company Christmas party even though you quit to go back to school") or even a sympathetic outreach ("I'm glad that you've recognized that you have a drinking problem, let's get you some help"). Acknowledgement of the partisan inequality in how legal and moral principles are applied is far too depressing for me.

Thank you all in advance for assisting in my self delusion.

I'm comforted by a fantasy about Christie and company having to walk home along Rt 78 if only they'd left the kids at home. Lucky! It's like you can draw a line through Christie forgetting to register his wife's car because he was too busy leaking bullshit smears to the press on behalf of Karl Rove.

That NO DEAL thing is troubling. Cops should not be allowed to influence the judge with such a low level communication. I'm sure Professor Gates would have gotten a NO DEAL if a ticket was being issued. And just what constitutes "behaving badly?" Driving while black? Crusing on the wrong side of town? Unwilling to allow a cop to roll over your constitutional rights?

There is a disturbing trend in this country of an increasing commingling of government powers. If laws are broken, they are supposed to be enforced. Cops shouldn't be making decisions about which crimes or violations are prosecuted and which are not. A cop deciding to give you a verbal warning for a traffic violation is problematic because they are acting in the role of the judiciary, deciding that under the current situation the law broken doesn't deserve enforcing.

If a judge abuses their judicial powers, there are systems in place which will hopefully document and punish them for the abuse. No such system exists for cops acting as judge. If black or hispanic or poor defendants consistently get convicted more often and receive harsher punishments than middle or upper class white defendants committing the same crimes, that is clearly in the record and if we as a society cared, we could make a stink about it. What is much more insidious is a cop deciding that certain types of people (the elderly, mothers with children, provocatively dressed women) deserve being let off with a warning more often than others. Or that white middle class teenagers should have their dime bag confiscated and let off with a stern lecture while the poor black teenagers should get cuffed and stuffed for the same offense. Or that cops are above certain laws.

My rant aside though, I think the characterization of "NO DEAL" written on tickets is incorrect. My suspicion is that the message is for the prosecutor (who would make the deal) and not the judge. In general, I don't have a big problem with that and in this case it might be appropriate. My read on this story is that Christie was trying very hard to leverage his position to get special treatment and was enough of an ass about it that the cop wanted to make sure it didn't happen. It might have been a bit of a power trip but I still have a hard time taking issue with the powerful having to follow the same laws as everybody else.

I'm trying to figure out what he was doing in Lambertville if he was trying to get to a U of Delaware football game. That would entail getting on I-95 or the Turnpike not speeding over winding roads 40 miles west near a tourist trap like Lambertville on a Saturday. If you're trying to turn a 2 hour trip from North Jersey into 5 hours that's a good way to do it.

And if he's so disorganized he can't remember when the registration and insurance are due on his wife's car how the hell is he qualified to manage the state? Nobody's gonna let him get away with the "Do you know who I am?" defense if he screws up as governor.

No Lambertville is on the other side of the river from New Hope PA and the whole area is full of antique shops and expensive boutiques. On a Saturday in the fall it's like trying to drive across Manhattan on 42nd St. at rush hour.

I live in New Jersey and have been stopped for driving an unregistered car. I was charged with failing to produce documentation, that's all. I was never threatened with being towed. I had to go to court to pay a fine after getting the car registered. I don't know that Christie received any special treatment. I don't support him, but this has nothing to do with that.

The guy was pulled over for doing 58 in a 40mph zone. He had no registration because he didn't bother to send in his renewal form or go to the DMV to pick up his new license plate stickers. He had no insurance card because he didn't bother to pay his car insurance bill. And then he tried to pull rank on the cop.

I don't know about you but to me that's more serious than just forgetting to put your registration card in your glove box. It sounds like the guy thinks rules are for little people.

My Gawd!!! Are there any Republicans left that are not tainted by some immoral, unethical, or otherwise stupid undertaking? Tom Kean must be shaking his head.

Tom Kean won the governorship by fewer than 1,800 votes in 1981. After over a year in court his campaign and the RNC were fined and signed a consent decree to never again use their intimidation tactics, their "Ballot Security Task Force" that scared thousands away from the polls in Newark.

Tom Kean is an asshole.

This is not even a story. Please. The guy was with a car load of people heading to a football game and driving a car with expired registration. Big deal.

We're not so desperate in Jersey that we're relying on a speeding ticket/expired registration "scandal", are we? I haven't followed this race much, but it does seem to me that this is a non-story.

I live in New Jersey and do not recall hearing the name Chris Christie before this year but I do recall that the US attorney tried to smear Bob Menendez in 2006 a brazen, nasty effort to help Tom Kean Jr. in the Senate race. It was a pretty rank piece of business.

So, this is a case of turnabout is fair play. All Christie is running on is the notion that he has near-magical powers to fix everything thats annoying people in this state. And yet, he can't even manage to renew his car registration, can't get his car insurance check in the mail.
