TPMDC Saturday Roundup

Obama: Economic Situation Improving, But More Work Needed
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama said that the latest GDP numbers show that the stimulus bill is working, and that the economy is on the way to recovery -- but there is still work to be done:

"This won't happen overnight. As I've said before, it will take many more months to fully dig ourselves out of a recession - a recession that we've now learned was even deeper than anyone thought," said Obama. "But I'll continue to work every day, and take every step necessary, to make sure that happens. I also want to make sure that we don't return to an economy where our growth is based on inflated profits and maxed-out credit cards - because that doesn't create a lot of jobs. Even as we rescue this economy, we must work to rebuild it stronger than before."

GOP Address: "Republicans Want Health Care Reform That Works"
In this weekend's Republican address, Sen. John Thune (R-SD) warned against a government takeover of health care by the Democrats:

"Republicans want health care reform that works. Reform that brings down costs for families and small businesses, and reform that provides better care to more people," said Thune. "On all these points, the current proposals by the President and the Democrat leadership in Congress fall short. Their plan for government-run health care would disrupt our current system and force millions of Americans who currently enjoy their employer-based coverage into a new health care plan run by government bureaucrats."

Obama's And Biden's Day Ahead
President Obama is spending Saturday at Camp David, and will return to the White House on Sunday morning. This morning, Vice President Biden delivered remarks to kick off the second day of meetings for Cabinet members at Blair House.

Labor/Liberal Groups To Spend $10-$20 Million In August Campaign
The Hill reports that labor unions and other liberal advocacy groups have budgeted between $10 and $20 million for the August recess, to mobilize support for the health care bill. "There will be a huge amount of grassroots organizing at the local level combined with selected paid advertising," said Richard Kirsch, national campaign manager of Health Care for America Now.

NYT: Analysts Say Obama Can't Pay For Everything By Taxing Rich
The New York Times reports that there is skepticism among economists of both the left and the right, regarding President Obama's desire to raise taxes exclusively on the rich to pay for the deficit and new programs. "This idea that everything new that government provides ought to be paid for by the top 5 percent, that's a basically unstable way of governing," said Leonard Burman, a veteran of the Clinton administration Treasury and director of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

NRA Failing To Sway Senators Against Sotomayor
The Associated Press reports that the National Rifle Association's opposition to Sonia Sotomayor doesn't seem to have had much an effect on Capitol Hill, with several high-scoring Senators like Max Baucus (D-MT), Jon Tester (D-MT) and even Lamar Alexander (R-TN) announcing their support. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) has not yet taken a position, but the NRA's grading system didn't seem to be much of a factor: "I'd probably have a good rating regardless."

Huckabee Taking Sides In 2010 Primary Races
CQ points out that former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) has been taking an active role in Republican primaries for 2010, with his group HuckPAC supporting conservative candidates such as Marco Rubio for Senate in Florida, Rex Rice for Congress in South Carolina, and others. In all, HuckPAC raised $305,000 in the first six months of the year, and spent all but $48,000 left on hand.

Franken Relishes New Role In Public Policy
The Associated Press profiles Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), finding that the comedian-turned-politician is very much enjoying his new role: "I've got to get up to speed very, very quickly, so I'm focused on that." Said Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA): "He really understands the sort of workings of government and how policy is developed and the effect it has. This is not some passing fancy of his. This is something he's been intellectualizing on and studying for many, many years."

Is it just me, or did Thune's nose grow noticeably longer by the end of his lie-fest?

user-pic

Such liars!!!!!!!!!1

Senator Thune: I would respond that the Republic leadership in Congress has been simply obstructing progress..... except that to deliberately misstate the term used by the Republican Party to reference themselves would be petty, childish and small, plus it would make me sound stupid and detract from my message.

Or submitting a plan with numbers might help.

Although they are freedom fighters leading a counterinsurgency.

I'm surprised Obama is at Camp David. I had assumed he'd be with the Cabinet today. It might be a wise move to get away. Sort of like Kennedy learned to do.

user-pic

So Obama! The campout will be much more productive with the Boss away

NYT analysts say we can't pay for everything by taxing the rich...... but, it's certainly a great place to start.

Let's analyze the Bush tax cuts. We give $1.3 trillion dollars back to the wealthy, and we run up $1.2 trillion dollars in deficits, which we finance by borrowing from the wealthy, which increases their income by $30 to $40 billion dollars per year. Such a deal!

user-pic

I didn't bother to read that article. It just seemed like common sense to me. But yes, it's a great start.

Punklicans -- the party of no. Jim Thune - the guy that just knows. Obama is whipping the Senate into shape right now. The congress is awash and oil similar.

BAN! BAN! BAN! Reported abuse... AGAIN!

user-pic

So if the Republicans want health care that works, where is their recognition of the failures of the current lack-of-system? Where is their realistic and workable plan to fix the many and growing problems with American health care?

Thune lies.

user-pic

um, well, it's very simple. They support small-business owners, and they love competition, and they really, really , really hate socialism.

Oh.

And insurance companies ARE small businesses -- no, strike that. They HELP small businesses -- no, strike that (because they RUIN small businesses). Insurance companies NEVER stand in between patients and their doctors -- strike that, but THAT is how they will save money with their wonderful reform.

Oh,

And since they will FINALLY (after almost 100 years of having total control over the market}, be able to really compete, which will make everything less expensive -- trust them ; everything will be fine.

Oh,

But of course it actually will not be less expensive as if there weren't a 40% "mark-up" for profits, and other overhead. I mean, if there were health-care without profit it would be communism, right? Who cares if we spend more and have worse outcomes?

Did I leave anything out?

NYT is registration required, but this:

This idea that everything new that government provides ought to be paid for by the top 5 percent, that's a basically unstable way of governing, ...

Does not say that it cannot be done, just that he for some reason does not want it that way.

Any further light?

user-pic

What is Thune's plan?

From my standpoint, No Rationing Is Required.

In case you are a doctor, and your pay is dependent upon your patient's outcome, you will more likely strive to prescribe the best medicine for your patient, let alone avoiding unnecessary cares, and hope your patient will feel better as promptly as possible.

Studies have documented that nearly one half of physician care in the United States is not based on best practices and that at least 98,000 Americans die of a 'medical error' each year.

Under the new health care program, practitioners are expected to eagerly and 'voluntarily' implement the 'recommendations' to work best for them, I think.

Nowadays, we can't imagine the society without IT SYSTEM, just to think of the bank that lacks it, presumably what we should fear most would be the medical institutes without the essential program. I think measurable savings in the transformative health program might be reached.

Thank So Much !

user-pic

Did anybody else notice ow e lied about the cost of reforming the healthcare industry? He stated $3 trillion. Not accurate. Thought these people were Christians? They sre do lie a lot. Gives Christianity a bad name.

user-pic

Look, I don't know if the rest of you are as fed up as I am with the obstruction and political game playing going on with this health care reform...but I DO know this - the Republican obstructionists and the Blue Dog Dems have absolutely NO clue what the rest of us are going through with healthcare. Maybe it's time they did!

If you agree, please sign the petition below, and forward it - any way you can - to anyone and everyone you know! Time to let them know how we feel!!!!

The innovative idea of 'a pay for outcome' will most likely prompt team approach and decision, as at Myo clinic, and the result is a greater likelihood of correctly diagnosing and effectively treating a patient earlier in the process.

Studies have documented that nearly one half of physician care in the United States is not based on best practices and that at least 98,000 Americans die of a 'medical error' each year.

Under the 'pay for outcome' pack, supposedly best practices as 'recommendations' would simply help them make a better decision, and the government won't still have to meddle in the final, actual decision-making process as a non-expert.

Thank You !
