Obama: "Outlandish Claims" About Health Care Bill Are "Simply Not True"
In this week's YouTube address, President Obama rebutted what he called "outlandish claims" that have been made against his health care plan:

"So, let me explain what reform will mean for you," said Obama. "And let me start by dispelling the outlandish claims that reform will promote euthanasia, cut Medicaid, or bring about a government takeover of health care. That's simply not true. This isn't about putting government in charge of your health insurance; it's about putting you in charge of your health insurance.

Virginia Gubernatorial Race Takes Center Stage In GOP Address
This weekend's Republican address was delivered by Bob McDonnell, the GOP nominee for Governor of Virginia. He delivered a standard conservative message, with a focus on how these issues affect his own state as well as the country at large:

"As I travel throughout Virginia, I listen to our people who are concerned about the jobs they have, worried about finding the jobs they need, and concerned about what jobs will be available for their kids in the years ahead," McDonnell said, later adding: "As Republicans, we believe you create jobs by keeping taxes and regulation low, and litigation at a minimum."

No Obama Events Today
President Obama does not have any public events scheduled for today. He will, however, be traveling tomorrow to Guadalajara, Mexico.

PhRMA To Spend Big In Favor Of Health Care Reform
The Associated Press reports that the pharmaceutical industry will spend $150 million this fall in favor of President Obama's health care plan -- which could go a long way in countering the opposition of conservative groups and the insurance industry. In this case, the industry and reformers have a common self-interest, in that wider coverage would also boost drug sales.

Sotomayor Sworn In On SCOTUS
Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in this morning as the newest Supreme Court Court Justice. She was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice John Roberts, who said that Sotomayor could "begin work as associate justice without delay."

Secret Service Could Investigate "Death To All Marxists" Fax
The Secret Service is now looking into a fax that was sent to the office of Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), which appeared to be a death threat against President Obama. The fact was of the infamous Obama/Joker picture that has been circulating among right-wing activists, with a message added: "Death to All Marxists! Foreign and Domestic!"

Hillary Tours South Africa
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton toured through South Africa today, visiting a Cape Town housing project she'd previously visited as First Lady in the 1990's. "This is what I really believe in," she said later in the day. "I mean, I have traveled literally all over the world and when people organize themselves and are given the tools and the training to really empower themselves and their future and build houses and communities, that's what's lasting."

Beating the ever-annoying DonDavis to the punch with the first comment!

And without flacking your own blog, no less! Well done!

150-200 million for healthcare from Phrma? That is an insane amount!

user-pic

That's peanuts compared to how much the industry has stolen from the american people. The us subsidizes world drup prices. Why? Why aren't we paying as much for drugs as the rest of the world, ones that work, not the bullshit they shovel down people's mouths. It really is a criminal industry, along with "health" insurance, which conceptually makes no sense in any event.

user-pic

No wonder the concern about less research being done with national healthcare...they're spending all the research money now!

user-pic

McDonnell is a disciple of Pat Robertson's and I believe a Regent University Law Grad ala Michelle Bachmann.....these people should not be in public service.....they have only one agenda and it corresponds very nicely with the C Street mob.

user-pic

Slight correction (not that it makes any difference):

Batshit Bachmann went to Oral Roberts University, site of the infamous Prayer Tower where dear Oral kept being held hostage — by God, by god! I suspect her claims of successfully negotiating with the Almighty for his release is buried in her resume somewhere. I understand the Prayer Tower doubles as one of the world's largest cuckoo clocks when it's not being used for various extortion schemes.

To bad about the threats against our leaders, but those are the same folks who have degraded this country to the point of anarchy.

The Dems and Reps protect their own above all else. They have made rules different for the elite than the commoners. They have vilified the other party to the point that national interests no longer matter.

Wars are being fought without even investigating or looking at data. Torturers are being protected from prosecution. Laws which would get commoners jailed no longer apply to the elite folks in Washington. Campaign promises are just lies to be thrown out to get votes.

The only thing mattering to the mobsters in Washington is to be sure to remain in power at ALL costs.

We are now seeing some of the results of this neglect. Currently, it is coming from our warped Christian right groups specific to this country (faith which relies on NRA membership in case God is not looking at the time, belief that torture is necessary and condoned by God when used by his followers, inclination to kill and skin innocent and defenseless creatures while promoting the death of those who believe in a woman's right to her own body, execution for non Christian transgressors but forgiveness for brothers in faith... etc.).

Once the Reps regain some semblance of power, it will come from the evil left wing, vilifying the other team.

Note, however, that almost all of this anger is coming about because the leadership on both sides of the aisle have driven the ideology that total destruction awaits us if ANYTHING coming from the other mob is allowed to become law.

We are voting in those very folks who have been promoting this behavior and attitude for years.... and will most likely continue until we no longer have the right to vote... IMHO

user-pic

Really?

The left was making death threats, killing doctors, shooting up churches?

False equivalency is tantamount to lying.

user-pic

Sorry JohnnyDoughboy, but your neat and tidy characteristic diatribe providing the laundry checklist issues of all that's wrong with politics in Washington had you getting carried away, entering over the top mode in the last two paragraphs.

"Note, however, that almost all of this anger is coming about because the leadership on both sides of the aisle have driven the ideology that total destruction awaits us if ANYTHING coming from the other mob is allowed to become law."

ANYTHING is quite absolute but is a gross exaggeration. On major party platforms where entrenched interests and big money lobbyists have dug in positions, yes this is obvious. But Obama has invited republicans to the table should they be earnestly willing to pass legislation and provide fresh ideas that reflect their conservative pragmatism. Problem is, they remain hopelessly obstructionist and haplessly dogmatic in sticking with their failed policy prescriptions. Were the democrats so bent on pure obstruction while in the minority? No, you can't even compare the cutthroat conservatives with their democratic counterparts as they exist in entirely different leagues. You did not see the kind of demonization by democrats of conservatives until the GOP ruling party and their policies began failing and failing spectacularly after six years of the illegitimate appointed president GWB.
Their republican counterparts can't even wait six MONTHS to tie democrats and Obama down to a failed economy of their own doing and a failed stimulus that's had all of 5 months to work.

"We are voting in those very folks who have been promoting this behavior and attitude for years.... and will most likely continue until we no longer have the right to vote... IMHO"

And guess what? Even if we voted these people out and voted new people in to replace them, things would just continue business as usual because it's not the politicians but the system that is inherently flawed by allowing entrenched special interests to hold a disproportionate amount of power.

actually it'd make things worse. much as the term-limits craze made state legislatures across the country ever more dependent on/captured by lobbyists/'special interests'.

In 2003, under G.W. Bush, the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality published a report recommending Advance Care Planning, with detailed guidelines for practitioners. Nobody called that euthanasia.

Advance Care Planning is legal in almost every state; the bill in question merely allows health care providers to be paid by Medicare for counseling patients on this matter, should the patient request this service - it would not be mandatory.

Thanks!

With no townhalls close by and a serious hankerin to lick a big teabag or six, I decided to troll the YahooBuzz! comments on an EXCELLENT article in today's NyT on the Bagger Hooliganism (

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/08/us/politics/08townhall.html?hp

Figuring it would draw flies, I posted early and stayed late

Eventually after slapping down lie after lie I realized that I was holding a TOWNHALL!

They scattered like cockroaches in the light. Galls them when they can't shout you down

I've a file now for future use and have added yours to the collection, just in case I get bored and horny again

(Yea I know, I need a life but Eric spurns my every blandishment)

user-pic

BTW and speaking of Kleefeld

Eric made The Opinionator today!

Eric Kleefeld at Talking Points Memo thinks both sides are to blame: “It’s not at all clear who started it and both sides appear to be blaming the other … Both the Tea Party and labor union folks are yelling at each other.”

Good post and thanks for the links.

user-pic

Can I poach that and post on other websites (with link back and attribution)?

That is a great debunking post there.

user-pic

Yes I did!

John --

Congratulations.

Just moments ago, Judge Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as the newest Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Our highest court and the nation it serves will benefit for years to come from Judge Sotomayor's brilliance, wide-ranging legal experience, fair-mindedness, and commonsense understanding of how the law touches our daily lives. President Obama picked the right person for the job, and you stood up for her from the very beginning.

You helped make today an historic one for the court and for our country.

Thank you,

Vice President Joe Biden

Isn't it reassuring to know that the secret service and FBI "might" be interested in investigating death threats against Democratic members of Congress? Of course if those threats were against Repub members, the National Guard would be called in to police the leftist organizations. This is just how it works in the USA - much the same as in other American continent nations.

Has anyone been left out of the info loop?
Are there any people living who do not understand big pharma snd all isurance will not let go of their fake importance.
No one needs them anymore with uni-health or something close.
Let the people win for a change!
Is it that hard to notice big-pharma and all insurance is fraud??
Hope people wake up!

user-pic

""As Republicans, we believe you create jobs by keeping taxes and regulation low, and litigation at a minimum."

And those policies resulted in the economic disaster that the Democrats are currently in the process of fixing, McDonnell. Your policies are the *last* thing Virginia needs.
