TPMDC Saturday Roundup
Obama: We Have Rationed Care And Bureaucracy Right Now
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama set out to debunk the attacks against his health care proposals -- and put the blame squarely on insurance companies with a vested interest in the status quo, who commit the same abuses that opponents of reform are warning against:
"If you're worried about rationed care, higher costs, denied coverage, or bureaucrats getting between you and your doctor, then you should know that's what's happening right now," said Obama. "In the past three years, over 12 million Americans were discriminated against by insurance companies due to a preexisting condition, or saw their coverage denied or dropped just when they got sick and needed it most."
Hatch: Town Hall Protestors Are Not "Un-American"
In this weekend's Republican address, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said that Republican do support meaningful reforms in health insurance -- and attacked Democrats over their health care plans and for belittling protestors at town halls:
"I am disappointed about the attempts to characterize the behavior of Americans expressing their concerns as 'un-American,'" said Hatch. "Although I strongly encourage the use of respectful debate in these town halls, we should not be stifling these discussions. There is nothing 'un-American' about disagreements. In fact, our great nation was founded on speaking our minds."
Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama and the First Lady will tour Yellowstone National Park at 1:30 p.m. ET, will depart at 4:35 p.m. ET, and will arrive in Grand Junction, Colorado, at 5:40 p.m. ET, where Obama will hold a town hall on health insurance reform at 6:25 p.m. ET. They will depart from Grand Junction at 8:10 p.m. ET, and will arrive in Phoenix, Arizona, at 9:35 p.m. ET.
Conrad's Office: He Is Not Committed To Opposing Public Option
Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) has moved to shoot down reports that he has promised to oppose a health care bill with a public option. His spokesperson Sean Neary told Salon that Conrad had told constituents that he won't let the government run their health care, but that this position does not preclude the option.
Webb Wins Release Of U.S. Prisoner In Burma
Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) won the release of John Yettaw, an American who had been imprisoned by the Burmese government for attempting to meet with democratic opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Webb also met with Suu Kyi, as well as with the junta leader Gen. Than Shwe. "It is my hope that we can take advantage of these gestures as a way to begin laying the foundations of goodwill and confidence building in the future," Webb said in a statement.
AP: Republicans Back Away From End-of-Life Counseling
The Associated Press has caught on that Republicans who previously backed living wills and end-of-life counseling are now backing away from it, and standing by Sarah Palin's "death panel" remarks to slam President Obama. "Until last week this was basically a nonpartisan issue," said John Rother, executive vice president of the AARP. Sen. Johnny Isakson previously called the death panel idea "nuts," but now says of Palin: "I would never question anyone's defense of their child."
Kennedy's Absences Raise Concern For Health Vote
The Hill reports that some people in Washington are worried that Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) may not be able to make it to the Senate to vote on health care reform. This worry is especially pertinent after Kennedy was unable to attend his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver's funeral yesterday.
Hillary Finishes Tour Of Africa
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton finished up her tour of Africa on Friday, saying that she was even more committed to helping the region than she was before. "The Obama administration has delivered a message of tough love," said Clinton. "We're not sugarcoating the problems, we're not shying away from them. We are investing time and effort in the people of Africa."

"I would never question anyone's defense of their child."
Really Johnny? If Sarah Palin said she needed to defend her child against Obama's legions of bloodthirsty unicorns, you wouldn't question that either?

Well, as long as you weren't speaking your mind 6 years ago protesting the Iraq War. See, that was entirely un-American and traitorous to not be supporting the President!
And believe me, you would have heard a lot more about Iraq War 'disagreements' back then if Bush had had the courage to run town halls that weren't pre-screened to only include boot-licking sycophants.

Took the words right out of my mouth. It is sad that astro-turf screaming down an attempt at a reasoned discussion on a critical issue, such as healthcare, gets defended as being "patriotic" by these tools. However, people asking a freaking question about a trumped up war where hundreds of thousands of innocents are getting blown up by laser guided bombs are called traitors. Where were you 6 years ago you criminal?

Exactly! Republicans sure can dish it out when they're being discriminated against when they speak their minds, but steadfastly defend their actions against others exercising the same rights they claim they're being denied.

The bad behavior of anti-abortion protesters are Planned Parenthood clinics as well as at abortion clinics has probably turned more ordinary Americans into pro-choice activists than any other activity by the so called Right to Life.
If the Tea Baggers were coming to exercise their own free speech rights and engage in debate by challenging and listening to the responses that would be one thing. If they are coming -- as the most rabid of them are -- the paid shills and those truly terrified by the insurance industries' phony claims -- to simply shout and disrupt other peoples attempts to exercise their own 1st Amendment Rights it will backfire in the same way. Voters who otherwise would have snoozed through the 2120 elections will be incensed and active. The closing of the numbers in the Corzine race and Sestak race may be an early indication.

The 2120 elections are pretty far away.
Perhaps you mean 2012?

...huh.
For once I think we may have the Republicans fallen into the "if you're defending, you're losing" rule.

I wouldn't worry about ted kennedy showing up for a vote on health care. It would take an army to keep him away from that vote. It's been his life's work. He will be there no matter what. The question will be if he wants to be there and if a rationale bill gets passed, including obviously a public option. No more corporate welfare for insurance companies and big pharma.

OH MY GOD. I am listening to cockburn's townhall. Talk about fear mongering and lying. He is completely lying and is getting airtime on the CNN (Conservative Non-News Network). Why don't they fact check this sh*t??? They should do a piece showing how this guy was lying.
Also, he had to throw in a dig about illegal immigrants. How many illegal immigrants are there in freaking oklahoma? Two? They'd have to be nuts to go there. Pathetic.

Kennedy will be there for the vote. They will carry him in on a stretcher for that vote.
However, if he isn't alive for the vote than I am sure that Devall Patrick will appoint another Democratic Senator in Kennedy's place as a placeholder until mid-term elections. I predict Kennedy's wife will be the placeholder.

"Conservatives have become adept at playing the media for suckers, getting inside the heads of editors and reporters, haunting them with the thought that maybe they are out-of-touch cosmopolitans and that their duty as tribunes of the people's voices means they should treat Obama's creation of "death panels" as just another justiciable political claim. If 1963 were 2009, the woman who assaulted Adlai Stevenson would be getting time on cable news to explain herself. That, not the paranoia itself, makes our present moment uniquely disturbing. "

Well, that is a little benign. If it is true, then these buffoons suck as "journalists". I don't believe it, for what it's worth. It's corporate owned crap that they feed us, day in and day out. I get more information, and credible reporting from the freaking BBC, a government run, paid for and operated news outlet. Is that f'n sick or what? This country has fallen so far, it really is pathetic. I listened to Conservative Non-News Network (CNN) for a couple of hours today while I was working and it really was nuts. Why don't they freaking report and call people out for the liars that they are? It was beyond disgusting.
I really think that it is time for a constitutional convention. Our country needs it and times have dramatically changed, in many ways. How can an f'n senator from North Dakota, population 630,000, have so much power? It's not rational. The mayor of NY City or LA, population 200 times North Dakota doesn't have that much power at all. Time to shake things up for a variety of reasons.

journalist is nothing but a title for someone savvy enough to play both sides against the middle in order to create a steady revenue flow for the media outlet. It has nothing to do with the abilities of Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley, MacNeil/Lehrer, et al. There are some up and coming individuals that bear watching: Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Naomi Klein, Jane Mayer's, et al. I wonder when the MSM will take a serious look t their product and realize they have pandered themselves to where National Enquire is competing for shelf space with them and they're winning.

Good move GOP to back lies told by the facebook high priestess of dumb. Maybe the GOP doesn’t realize there are records of their original stance voting in FAVOR of "death Panel"

The GOP is trying to make the case that they are the defenders of the First Amendment right to "free speech".
They are trying to spin that anyone who doesn't allow screaming, shouting, talking over, disruption and chaos is against "free speech".
If it takes hold, they can go on and blather about how Democrats, liberals, etc. are against "free speech".
The irony is they don't care (and neither does the Corporate media) about "free speech" or they would have given equal air time to those who were against the Iraq war.

I'm still waiting for some astute Democrat to come out and say there is a big difference between the exercise of Free Speech and that of censorship. Then launch into a diatribe of the differences complete with historic examples that perfectly match the current brouhaha. Our side needs to start fighting them with the known historical significance their choice of words and actions.

Notice also, that Republicans and conservative types were among the loudest shouting "Anti-American!" and "Unpatriotic!" at all those young people who tried to exercise their "Right to Free Speech" by attempting to have a civil protest against the Vietnam War.
Republicans have been using the "Liberals (read: Democrats) hate America" schick since then.

John king is a complete assh*le. He had two repukes beating up on a dem and didn't give the dem the chance to speak at all. It was disgusting. He ratified and did not challenge the lies. You have the repuke gregory and the repuke king. Where is the freaking "balance"? Where are the facts and information?
I hope that obama takes on the corporate media and deals with this huge problem while he still has dem majorities in both houses. At this rate he will lose the house in 2010.
